Chapter 017: Level 10 Breakthrough & The Heat Spike

Some men drank. Some gambled. Austin optimized base layouts.

Give him five loose boards, three rusty spikes, and an afternoon with no foreman breathing down his neck, and he'd turn a ditch into a plumb-line irrigation trench. Over the next four in-game days, he tore through the logistics of Sunset Peak with the relentless, unblinking cadence of an industrial contractor staring down an overtime bonus.

Salvage didn't sit around gathering dust on his watch. Scrap was utility waiting for a hammer.

He stoked the domed basalt kiln, dialing in a tight thermal needle with his `/ignite_hearth` sub-routine. In went the pile of surplus ghost-iron hook daggers fished out of the French drain trench. The metal was vile stuff—slimy with dried corpse-grease, reeking of sulfur and old curses, forged in blood pits meant to snare human souls. The moment Austin introduced it to the unshielded thermonuclear wash of his hearth, the dark gunk didn't even have time to vaporize into smoke. The curses burnt off like dried wax. Impurities separated into crusty grey slag that floated right to the top of the melt, leaving behind clean, dense, high-carbon tool steel with a grain structure as tight as a bank vault.

Austin hauled the glowing orange billets over to a dressed granite anvil with heavy tongs.

*CLANG. CLANG. CLANG.*

The mountain air rang like a church bell. Sweat ran down the bridge of his nose, dripping off his chin into the quench tub with sharp, angry hisses.

By the third afternoon, he’d turned that demonic scrap into real hardware: two heavy strap hinges for the cabin door, four smooth spring-loaded latch bolts for the fences, a set of framing chisels that could shave yellow pine without catching, a drawknife for peeling hemlock bark, and a ten-pound cast-iron skillet with a bottom three-quarters of an inch thick. Austin spent two hours baking lard and wild seed oil into the iron over a low bed of hardwood coals. Layer by layer, the oil smoked, bonded, and darkened into a mirror-black, polymerized non-stick glaze smooth enough to skate on.

Li Xiaoyao watched the entire spectacle from the bottom step of the porch, hugging his bamboo broom to his chest, eyes round as soup bowls.

The boy was shivering with spiritual vertigo.

To young Xiaoyao, the Master wasn't just working metal. He had gathered the soul-drinking, blood-stained daggers of seven demonic slaughterers—cursed instruments that had hacked through whole villages—and fed them into the sacred hearth fire. No talismans. No cleansing chants. Just raw, unyielding creative intent. Watching those murder blades turn into gate latches, timber chisels, and a pan for morning eggs felt like staring right into the churning guts of the Great Dao of Transformation.

Austin, meanwhile, just liked how the skillet balanced in his wrist.

"Slide-off fried eggs," Austin muttered, testing the smooth seasoning with the flat of a wooden spatula. "Burnt cheddar wouldn't stick to this. Zero hot spots. Thermal retention for days."

He tossed the spatula onto the worktable, wiped his soot-stained palms on his apron, and checked his log. Between clearing thistles, shoveling aged compost into the potato beds, feeding irradiated briar seeds to the three Golden Sun-Crow chicks, and hauling crushed rock to grade the pathway between the cabin, the outhouse, and the chicken run, his quest tracker had been chirping like a wet cricket.

*Ding. Ding. Ding.*

On the fifth morning, just as Austin set the final copper rivet into the chicken coop latch, a deep golden chord vibrated behind his eyes:

Down in his lower gut, right where an old tradesman's hernia usually flared, something massive dropped into place.

*WHUUUUUUUUMP.*

The internal shockwave hit him like a sack of dry-mix quicklime to the solar plexus. Austin’s teeth clicked together. His rib cage groaned under a sudden, gut-wrenching gravitational pull. Inside his dantian, the microscopic bead of white plasma expanded, swelling to the size of a polished sapphire marble. It spun at six hundred thousand RPM, pinned inside a shrieking electromagnetic vortex that bent space-time into a tight little funnel.

Core temp crossed twenty-five thousand Kelvin.

The heat was pure cosmic violence. Even with the containment mesh holding at ninety-nine-point-nine-eight percent, that tiny fraction of leakage had to go somewhere. Hairline threads of electric-blue fire squeezed through his pores, dancing across the calluses of his palms, skittering across his knuckles, and jumping between his fingers like dry winter static on a wool rug.

Austin wiped his brow with the greasy hem of his sleeve. His collar was drenched.

"Lord above," Austin grunted, fanning himself with a dried lotus leaf from the rain barrel. "The ambient climate engine on this server is completely out of whack. Did somebody trip a breaker in the cooling room? Feels like ninety degrees and ninety-five percent humidity with zero cross-breeze. Who cranks the summer shader to maximum without giving you an offshore wind?"

He scooped a wooden ladle full of cold well water, drank it down in three noisy gulps, and wiped his mouth on his forearm, blissfully unaware of the localized apocalypse kicking off on his front lawn.

Beyond the timber fence, the mountain’s atmosphere was tearing down the middle.

A temporary leakage of zero-point-zero-two percent sounded like loose pocket change. But when that leakage poured off a twenty-five-thousand-degree stellar furnace, the math stopped being funny.

Morning frost on the surrounding granite ridges didn't melt into water. It detonated into roaring geysers of supercritical steam, hissing like fractured boiler valves across fifteen miles of wilderness.

The temperature on Sunset Peak leaped from twelve degrees Celsius to sixty-five degrees in four seconds flat. The air turned into a shimmering, rippling soup of thermal mirages, warping the horizon into greasy ribbons of distorted purple light.

High above, a brilliant sapphire aurora blossomed against the midday sun, pulsing in dead-lock sync with the spinning plasma marble in Austin's gut. The ambient spiritual qi of seven surrounding mountain chains—over three hundred square miles of ancient elemental pressure—snapped toward Sunset Peak as if sucked down an open sewer main. Trees bent double. Scree tumbled into ravines. The wind screamed through the pine needles with an ear-splitting howl.

Five miles away, on the high marble terrace of the Clear Sky Sect, Sect Master Gu Qing dropped his celadon teacup.

The porcelain shattered into twenty jagged bits on the flagstones. Scalding green tea soaked into his embroidered boots. He didn't blink. He didn't move.

Behind him, seven supreme Grand Elders scrambled out of their meditation alcoves, their faces bleached white as chalk. They hit the terrace balustrade in a frantic cluster, silk robes flapping like broken sails in the gale.

"The western sky..." Chief Elder Zhao croaked, his spotted hand trembling so hard his ring rattled against the jade railing. "Great Heavens above... look at the western ridge!"

Over Sunset Peak, the daylight sky had bruised into raw, glowing violet.

A suffocating tidal wave of pure Yang authority rolled down the mountain slopes. The fifth-rank flying swords strapped to the elders' backs began to rattle violently in their shark-skin scabbards, humming in terrified harmonic resonance with the gravity well above.

"The Ancestral Sovereign..." Gu Qing sank to both knees on the wet marble, his throat clicking as he struggled to swallow. His heart pounded against his ribs like a trapped crow. "He is breaking through the mundane ceiling... His comprehension of the ancient Dao has torn the mortal barrier asunder!"

"That's no simple breakthrough!" Elder Mu Chen screamed, pointing his brass alchemical ladle toward the upper stratosphere, his master-tier heat perception detecting the astronomical thermal readings peeling off the crest. "Look at the cosmic meridian! The sky is curdling! The Heavenly Dao... the plane’s own immune system has taken notice!"

*BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!*

A thunderclap detonated across the heavens with enough concussive force to rattle the teeth in every skull on the continent.

The atmosphere buckled. From the northern horizon, an ocean of churning, oily-black tribulation clouds five miles thick raced across the blue sky like spilled ink on silk. In less than ten ragged breaths, the noon sun was snuffed out completely.

Midnight fell over the Southern Cloud Mountains. A pitch-black, suffocating dark.

Deep inside the belly of that rolling black squall, hundreds of jagged crimson and violet lightning serpents coiled and snapped, their subsonic rumbles shaking the granite bedrock down to the tectonic mantle.

The Heavenly Dao had opened its eye.

An unregistered celestial anomaly—a stellar body packing the mass and heat of an extraterrestrial entity—was sitting on a dirt ridge in a mortal lower plane.

The Heavenly Tribulation Bureaucracy had brought the sledgehammer.

*RUMBLE-RUMBLE-RUMBLE.*

On Sunset Peak, the cabin door creaked open.

Austin stepped out onto the porch, carrying a small pine bowl filled with roasted peas tossed in sea salt and crushed wild garlic.

Down by the fence line, Li Xiaoyao stood frozen in the dirt, clutching his broom with white knuckles, his eyes wide as teacups, knees knocking together like wooden castanets.

"Hey! Kid!" Austin shouted over the rising wind, tossing a salted pea into his mouth. "Get your butt up on the porch! Out of the draft! If the clouds break before I get the crushed rock spread, you'll drag red clay through the kitchen, and I don't need your companion stats dinged with a head cold!"

Austin leaned against the porch rail, chewing slowly, and looked up at the churning vortex of purple lightning coiling directly over his roof ridge.

The veins on his forehead tightened into a solid, irritated knot.

"Unbelievable," Austin grumbled, crossing his arms with the sour, disgusted scowl of a general contractor watching a concrete truck get stuck in the mud. "Severe weather particle effects right when I’m getting ready to haul gravel. If this half-baked monsoon washes out the road crown before I can run the hand tamper over it, I’m gonna have to scrape the whole sub-base down to hardpan and start over. And listen to that low-frequency bass rattle in the window sash. The audio design on this patch is obnoxious. Can’t a guy get forty-five minutes of dry weather to do some basic flatwork?"
