You could hear the silence on Sunset Peak.

It was the ringing, hollow quiet that follows an artillery barrage, the kind where your eardrums feel thick and every breath rasps in your chest like dry sandpaper.

Down in the scrub weeds past the obsidian perimeter line, two hundred Clear Sky disciples, sixty Foundation elders, and Sect Master Gu Qing remained flat on their bellies. Nobody moved. Nobody coughed. Nobody dared shift an aching knee on the sharp granite scree. A young sword apprentice with a violent cramp in his hamstring simply bit down on his silk sleeve until his gums bled rather than make a single sound.

Every forehead pressed hard into the wild clover. Their eyes, wide and glassy with religious terror, stared through the grass stems at the four-room pine cabin resting quietly in the center of the black courtyard.

Ten minutes ago, fifty flying dreadnoughts and an ancient demonic tyrant had descended to wipe their sect from the historical record. Their ancestral mountain barrier had blown out like cheap window glass under a sledgehammer. Elders had bled out in the pavilion ruins. The whole order was ten seconds from total slaughter.

Then the mortal kid in the hemp shirt walked out onto his porch.

He reached into his pocket, flicked a common river pebble, and blew three seventy-foot warships into glowing vapor like clay pigeons at a shooting range.

When a mile-wide ocean of necrotic acid threatened to splash his gravel, he tilted his chin and belched a vertical column of sapphire-blue starfire that cleaved a three-hundred-foot dreadnought from stem to stern, vaporized a river of blood into thin air, and sent Patriarch Nether-Ghost shrieking back to his swamp like a scalded mongrel.

Sect Master Gu Qing slowly, carefully lifted his chin out of the dirt.

He looked left. Elder Mu Chen knelt with tears running freely through his singed white beard, both hands clasped against his chest in silent, weeping worship. The great alchemist's bronze cauldron sat quiet in the thistle weeds, its celestial fires reduced to a humble, flickering ember of devotion.

Gu Qing looked right. Chief Elder Zhao was doubled over, his heavy iron punishment staff cast aside in the scrub like an old tent peg. The grim disciplinary master looked hollowed out, stripped clean of sixty years of haughty pride, breathing in slow, shuddering gasps as he stared at the peaceful cabin eaves.

Around them, disciples who had survived the retreat were trembling in stunned disbelief. They had watched their homes burn, their masters fall, and the sky turn to poison. Now the air was clear, sweet with the scent of roasted pine and fresh dew, and the terrifying conquerors of the Northern Waste were nothing more than smoke drifting over distant ravines.

Gu Qing took a long, steady breath. The ozone drifting off the obsidian courtyard tasted clean and sharp, soothing the burned spiritual channels in his chest. He rose to his knees, smoothed the charred remnants of his violet silk robes, and raised his cracked voice across the silent ridges.

His words would be carved into the grand jade steles of the Canglan Continent for the next ten thousand years:

"By the supreme and unalterable decree of the Clear Sky Sect..." Gu Qing announced, his voice trembling with solemn reverence. "Sunset Peak is hereby permanently elevated to the **Supreme Ancestral Divine Sanctuary** of our order! The mountain within a radius of ten leagues is declared an Untouchable Celestial Forbidden Zone! All sect tithes, ancestral mineral veins, spiritual herb harvests, and sacred treasuries are placed at the absolute, unconditional disposal of the Sacred Master! Any mortal, disciple, elder, or ascendant sovereign who dares step upon His gravel without express divine summons shall be purged from the wheel of reincarnation unto nine generations!"

Behind him, two hundred battered disciples and sixty elders dropped their foreheads back into the clover with a single, synchronized *thud*:

**"MAY THE SUN ANCESTOR LIVE AS LONG AS THE NINE HEAVENS! MAY HIS RADIANCE CLEANSE THE COSMOS!"**

Inside the pine cabin, Austin was completely oblivious to the theological revolution unfolding on his front lawn.

He sat at his clean cedar table on his newly leveled three-legged milking stool, taking a long, cold pull of fresh well water from a carved pine cup.

"Ahhh," Austin exhaled, setting the mug down on the planed wood with a solid *clunk*. "Nothing beats cold well water after a frantic round of base defense."

He rubbed the back of his neck, leaning back against the solid pine logs, admiring the snug joints of his cabin walls. Every four-by-eight timber was locked in with double-dovetail notches, sealed with pine pitch and crushed oak moss to keep out mountain drafts. The floor joists were framed on sixteen-inch centers, solid as a bank vault underfoot. No squeaks, no flex, no settling. Good, honest carpentry.

Austin summoned the developer console with a lazy blink of his left eye:

Austin stretched his arms over his head until his spine cracked like dry pine kindling. A deep, warm satisfaction hummed behind his ribs.

"Tutorial zone cleared," Austin grinned, tapping the floating amber prompt with a rough fingernail. "Starter base framed up and weather-tight. Perimeter secured. Automated perimeter defenses online. Griefing party booted from local airspace. Now the real sandbox survival gameplay finally begins."

His eyes drifted down to the lone blemish on the report card: *Base Cleanliness Rating: 99.8%*.

Austin’s brow furrowed in irritation. He clicked his tongue against his molars.

"Still need to get some vinegar and baking soda to scrub that engine soot smudge off coordinate four-twelve," Austin muttered, shaking his head with a scowl. "Ninety-nine point eight percent is unacceptable on a finished turnover. You leave a jobsite looking sloppy and word gets around. Next thing you know, clients are nickeling and diming your retainage fee. Unprofessional."

He closed the HUD and pushed open the heavy pine door leading into the back workshop lean-to.

The workshop smelled of pine sawdust, machine oil, and cold iron. Hanging on the pegboard were his hand planes, drawknives, framing squares, and chalk lines, each hung in its assigned outline.

Resting on the sturdy ash workbench was his latest fabrication: the **High-Frequency Thermal Plasma Pickaxe**.

He had spent twenty minutes fitting it together. The tool head was forged from refined ghost-iron billets dragged out of the perimeter collection trench, beaten square and annealed in charcoal. He had wired the internal thermal conduit straight into a miniature magnetic capacitor coil, and wrapped the ash-wood haft in strips of discarded Celestial Dragon-Vein Silk for grip and vibration damping.

Austin reached out and lifted the pickaxe by the throat.

The balance was sublime. It carried the reassuring heft of a twenty-pound splitting maul, yet the internal magnetic counterbalance made the head feel weightless in the hand. He rested his calloused thumb over the activation rune carved into the haft.

The twin pick heads lit up with a razor-thin, humming sheath of sapphire-blue plasma, vibrating at forty kilohertz with a dry, electric sizzle.

"Zero kickback. Center of mass right under the grip. High-frequency ultrasonic shear," Austin murmured, running an admiring eye down the planed wood. "Now that's proper tool ergonomics. An OSHA compliance officer would weep tears of pure joy."

He slung the humming tool over his right shoulder, pushed open the rear workshop door, and stepped out onto the rocky basalt shelf behind the cabin.

This was the highest rock outcrop on Sunset Peak—a raw, unweathered ridge of volcanic basalt plunging deep into the mountain's ancient bedrock.

Austin set his feet wide, digging the edges of his straw sandals into the stone. He rolled his shoulders, squared his stance, and hoisted the plasma pickaxe two-handed over his shoulder.

"Time to break ground on the industrial basement."

He brought the pick down in a smooth, fluid arc.

*CLACK-WHUUUUUUUUUUUUUM!*

The sapphire blade didn't rebound. It kicked up zero dust and threw zero gravel chips.

Instead, the forty-kilohertz plasma edge sliced six vertical feet into solid volcanic basalt like a hot butter knife sliding through soft tallow. The thermal shear vitrified the cut margins into glassy, dead-straight walls with a kerf width under a tenth of a millimeter.

*RUMBLE-THUD.*

A deep, hollow vibration groaned from deep inside the mountain crust.

A sudden, breathtaking updraft of cool subterranean air rushed up through the newly cut kerf, smelling richly of dense metallic minerals, cold stone, and raw celestial potential.

Austin stepped to the lip of the fresh cut and leaned over to peer into the dark.

Sixty feet down in the fissure, bathed in the blue glow of his plasma pick, lay a colossal, twisting vein of electric-blue crystalline ore. It was five yards thick, branching through the subterranean rock like lightning frozen in glass, plunging into the deep crust for miles!

A bright amber notification snapped across his vision:

Austin leaned over the glowing rift, the cool mineral draft ruffling his hair.

A slow, unhinged, thoroughly delighted grin spread across his face.

Four hundred and fifty thousand metric tons of indestructible ancient steel. An underground cavern system stretching straight down into the mountain's guts. In his mind's eye, the blueprints were already snapping together like Lego bricks: automated minecart hoppers, redstone-logic sorting chutes, gravity drop-shafts, and multi-tier blast furnaces running on geothermal heat.

"Oh yeah," Austin whispered, tossing the humming plasma pickaxe casually from his right hand to his left. "Time to go mining."
