In the vast, sprawling industrial expanse of the Perseus-Sagittarius shoring zone, there was no sound more terrifying to the working crews than the rhythmic, heavy clacking of four miniature steel-toed booties approaching along an expanded metal catwalk.

*Clack-clack. Clack-clack. Clack-clack.*

Grand Archon Yuan Shi, formerly the terrifying Supreme Executioner of the Celestial Inquisitor Tribunal who had snuffed out eight star systems with a single flick of his jade gavel, stood frozen in place. His hands, clad in thick split-cowhide welding gloves, gripped a three-foot brass grease gun against the leg of his denim overalls. Beside him, Chief Justice Gu Ming held a lint-free white shop towel in trembling fingers, his breath catching in his throat.

Emerging from the neon-lit staging bay of Cribbing Tower 2,418 was Chief Safety and Quality Inspector Pug.

The stout, barrel-chested bulldog moved with the unhurried, implacable cadence of a senior building official who had seen every shortcut, every botched weld, and every counterfeit bolt known to mortal and immortal engineering.

Over his golden-furred shoulders, Pug wore a custom-tailored, high-visibility orange safety vest with reflective silver micro-prisms that sparkled under the industrial sodium floodlights. Upon his wrinkled brow sat an ultra-lightweight white composite hard hat, secured by a padded dual-point chin strap that nestled comfortably beneath his jowls.

Slung beneath his chest in a quick-release leather holster was a specialized brass stamping mechanism fitted with an official vulcanized rubber pad carved in the exact shape of his right front paw print. Hanging beside it was a sealed tin of OSHA-grade crimson indelible marking ink.

Riding in a low-slung, battery-powered star-jade utility cart ten paces behind him was Austin, casually sipping lukewarm black coffee from a dented stainless steel thermos.

"Take your time, buddy," Austin murmured over the cart’s low electric whine. "Don't let 'em rush you. If a hydraulic fitting is sweating even a drop of fifty-weight oil, we don’t sign off on the sector."

Pug gave a single, gruff snort through his flat snout—*Hrmph*—and did not look back. He had an inspection to conduct.

Pug stepped onto the steel deck of Hydraulic Jacking Manifold Seven, which tied thirty-two four-foot-diameter cylinders directly into the bedrock anchor piles. The manifold was operating under forty-five thousand pounds per square inch of steady holding pressure, bracing against the immense inward gravitational subsidence of the Sagittarius arm.

Yuan Shi and Gu Ming snapped their heels together, standing at rigid military attention.

"Greetings to Chief Inspector Pug!" Yuan Shi shouted, his voice quavering slightly. "Sector Seven shoring battery prepared for formal twenty-four-hour quality acceptance walk-through! All sixty-four flexible stainless steel braided hoses are routed in accordance with ASME Section VIII, Division Two! Bend radiuses are maintained at twelve times nominal hose diameter!"

Pug did not acknowledge the greeting. Formal courtesies meant nothing to a dog whose sole duty was structural integrity.

With methodical, deliberate steps, Pug waddled up to Hydraulic Cylinder Seven-Alpha.

He tilted his head back, his dark, soulful brown eyes squinting through the safety glasses clipped to the brim of his hard hat. He examined the chrome-plated piston rod, looking for micro-pitting, scoring, or uneven wiper seal wear.

He leaned forward, pressing his moist black nose within two millimeters of the rod seal packing gland.

*Sniff. Sniff. Sniff.*

The silence on the catwalk was absolute. The cosmos fell dead silent. In the background, Austin’s level ninety-nine core idled with a deep hum. The only other sound was the shallow, nervous breathing of two ancient deities watching a dog sniff a hydraulic jack.

If Pug smelled aerosolized ester-based hydraulic fluid, it meant the inner chevron V-packing had sustained blow-by. A blown rod seal under forty-five thousand PSI would aerosolize into a disastrous high-velocity plasma jet the instant the Big Bounce rebound stroke struck the manifold.

Pug's nostrils flared. He snorted once. Twice.

His head turned slightly to the left. He sniffed the bleed-off needle valve.

Yuan Shi’s heart stopped. He remembered torquing that needle valve three hours ago. Had he remembered the copper crush washer? *Did he put the copper crush washer under the bonnet, or was it still sitting on his magnetic tray?!* A cold, existential dread rushed through the Grand Archon’s immortal marrow. If he had forgotten the crush washer, he would forfeit his white hard hat. He would be reduced to shoveling slag in the asteroid smelters for ten thousand eons!

Pug raised his front right paw.

Gu Ming squeezed his eyes shut, preparing for the crushing rebuke of a failed inspection.

Pug pressed his paw against the lower rim of the needle valve bonnet, running his calloused black toe pad along the threads. He pulled his paw back, held it up to his eyes, and inspected the pad under the sodium floodlights.

Bone dry. Zero microns of oil sheen.

Pug gave a soft, guttural sigh of satisfaction: *"Hmph."*

He turned his gaze toward the maintenance logbook mounted on the steel clipboard bolted to the manifold frame.

Austin hopped down from the utility cart, the steel deck ringing with the dense, monolithic weight of his one thousand nine hundred pounds of certified lead ballast. Austin reached out, lifted the leather latch on the logbook, and opened it to Form QC-400: *GALACTIC SHORING LINE INTEGRITY & HYDRAULIC RETENTION CERTIFICATE*.

"He's satisfied with the packing, boys," Austin said, his voice flat and reassuring. "Zero weeping. Gland torque looks even across all eight stud nuts."

Pug stepped forward. With practiced, mechanical efficiency, he dipped his right front paw into the open tin of crimson ink, coating his leather stamping pad with an even, brilliant layer of red pigment.

He hopped up, placing both front paws onto the steel clipboard ledge, and brought his right paw down onto the bottom signature block with a crisp, authoritative *THUMP*.

A perfect, flawless red paw print appeared directly above the line labeled: *CERTIFIED CHIEF INSPECTOR OF STRUCTURAL STABILITY*.

Yuan Shi let out a shuddering, ragged gasp, falling to his knees and pressing his forehead against the cold steel grating in raw, weeping gratitude.

"Approved..." Yuan Shi sobbed, tears splashing onto the diamond plate. "The Chief Inspector has approved Manifold Seven! The crimson seal of heaven is granted unto us!"

"Get off your knees, Yuan Shi," Austin sighed, tapping the clipboard with his grease pencil. "You’ll get grit in the slide tracks. Clean up those loose rags over by the accumulator rack, and make sure Gu Ming tops off the nitrogen pre-charge on the bladder bottles before shift change. We don’t run under-pressurized accumulators on this job site."

"Understood, Master Contractor!" Gu Ming barked, saluting with his shop rag pressed against his forehead. "Nitrogen pre-charge will be verified to within zero-point-five percent tolerance!"

Austin gave Pug a nod. "Alright, inspector. Next station: Cribbing Stack Forty-Nine. Tie Kuang reported a thirty-thousandth-of-an-inch leveling discrepancy on the upper star-jade shim pack."

At the mention of a leveling discrepancy, Pug’s ears shot straight up. His head snapped toward the north gantry, his jaw tightening into a grim, unyielding underbite.

He hopped back down from the clipboard, trotted over to the utility cart, and jumped directly into the passenger seat, planting his paws firmly on the dashboard.

*Clack-clack.*

Austin climbed into the driver’s seat, engaged the electric motor, and the cart hummed smoothly along the elevated rail line, gliding out over the deep cosmic rift.

Below them, the sight was breathtaking.

Spanning across the Perseus-Sagittarius corridor, five thousand massive star-jade cribbing stacks stood like an army of glowing green monoliths, each one shored, cross-braced, and tied back with three-light-year tension cables.

Every single cribbing stack was illuminated by arrays of heavy industrial floodlights, casting brilliant white beams across the swirling darkness of the converging cosmos.

Work crews stood by their stations every three hundred miles. Cultivators, celestial lords, and divine beasts wore yellow safety vests, hard hats, and work boots. They gripped their maintenance clipboards with white-knuckled anticipation.

They were all waiting for Pug.

At Cribbing Stack Forty-Nine, Tie Kuang and Xuan Ming were already waiting on the leveling deck, holding a five-foot precision master spirit level and a set of hardened steel feeler gauges.

The cart pulled up to the staging platform with a soft pneumatic hiss.

Pug vaulted from the passenger seat, his boots hitting the star-jade deck with solid, confident traction. He trotted straight to the base of the upper star-jade box crib, where eight massive five-hundred-ton hydraulic climbing jacks supported the load of an entire dwarf galaxy cluster.

Pug sat down on his haunches, cocking his head at the brass shim pack inserted between the star-jade billet and the jacking stool.

Tie Kuang knelt beside him, pointing with a calloused finger. "Chief Inspector, here’s the issue. On the morning thermal cycle, the ambient cosmic compression spiked by two hundred kelvins. The star-jade billet expanded by point-zero-three millimeters, creating a slight taper across the bearing face. I’ve pre-cut three twenty-gauge brass shims to correct the pitch, but I wanted your sign-off before we jack the stack and slide them in."

Pug leaned forward, his whiskers twitching.

He inspected the edge of the brass shims lying on the clean shop cloth. He tapped one with his left front paw, nudging it slightly to inspect the deburred edge.

No burrs. The edges had been draw-filed smooth with a fine mill bastard file, exactly as prescribed in Chapter 14 of the Master Contractor’s Field Handbook.

Pug gave a single, satisfied nod: *"Woof."*

He turned around, backed his rear end toward the jacking stool, and pointed with his stubby tail toward the hydraulic pump manifold.

"He says jack it," Austin translated, stepping out of the cart with his five-foot pipe wrench in hand. "Lift her fifty thousandths, Kuang. Slip the brass shims in, let her down slow, and verify bearing contact with blue layout dye."

"Right away, Master!" Tie Kuang grinned.

Tie Kuang engaged the electric hydraulic pump. The eight climbing jacks hummed in synchronized harmony, smoothly elevating the multi-trillion-ton star-jade billet by precisely fifty thousandths of an inch. Xuan Ming swiftly slid the brass shims into place with magnetic positioning wands. Tie Kuang eased the release valve, and the massive stone block settled down onto the shims with a deep, solid *THUD*.

Pug stepped forward, pressed his nose against the joint, and checked the feeler gauge slot.

The zero-point-zero-zero-one-inch feeler blade would not enter. The contact was one hundred percent uniform across the entire forty-square-foot bearing surface.

Pug let out a resounding, booming bark:

*"WOOF!"*

He trotted over to the inspection ledger, coated his paw in crimson ink, and slammed his paw print down onto the clearance sheet: *BEARING LEVELING COMPLIANT — ZERO DEFLECTION VERIFIED*.

A collective cheer erupted from the three hundred sect elders and demon kings stationed along Cribbing Stack Forty-Nine.

"The Chief Inspector has cleared the stack!" Xuan Ming cried, raising his hard hat to the stars. "Stack Forty-Nine is certified! Spacetime is plumb to within one part in a million!"

Austin leaned against the railing of the utility cart, looking out across the entire fourteen-light-year shoring line.

From Module Alpha to Cribbing Stack Five Thousand, thousands of crimson paw prints now gleamed upon the inspection clipboards of the cosmos.

Every hose was checked. Every anchor stud was torqued. Every slide plate was lubricated. Every shim pack was true, plumb, and square.

Austin checked his watch, then turned his gaze toward the center of the universe, where the collapsing cosmic horizon was now glowing with the terrifying, ultra-dense violet fire of total gravitational convergence.

"Good patrol, buddy," Austin said, leaning down to rub Pug’s wrinkled forehead. "The whole line is inspected, certified, and cleared. There isn’t a single loose bolt in the universe."

Pug sat proudly on the cart seat, his tail thumping against the vinyl cushion in a steady, victorious rhythm.

Austin’s hand closed around the throttle of the utility cart, his level ninety-nine core thrumming with five hundred zettawatts of primed, unstoppable power.

"Time to head back to Substation Zero-One," Austin commanded, his eyes narrowing with steely resolve. "The Big Crunch is reaching terminal compression. Next shift, we reverse the momentum."
