Canglan Provincial Capital, The Iron Pavilion Grand Citadel.
Deep in the subterranean forge-chambers of the imperial mining cartel, the air tasted of sulfur, burnt tallow, and pulverized anthracite. Heat shimmered off the slag trenches in distorted waves that seared the throat. Three stories overhead, massive bronze bellows—pumped by chained teams of horned mountain drakes—brayed like dying warhorses, blasting shrieking gales of draft air down into magma crucibles. Across twenty terraced smelting tiers, hundreds of soot-caked foundry hands swung ten-pound sledges against white-hot billets of spirit-steel, pounding out drill teeth, casing shoes, and heavy armor plates. The racket never stopped. A relentless, iron-on-iron drum cadence that hammered into a man's dental fillings.
At the center of the citadel's Great Obsidian Hall, perched upon a dais quarried from black basalt, sat Supreme Grand Elder **Tie Kuang**.
The man was a walking anvil. Eight feet of weathered, sun-scorched bronze muscle, seasoned by two centuries of volcanic draft and deep-earth radiation. His bare, slab-like shoulders were crosshatched with pale, jagged scars earned in a hundred subterranean beast drives and claim wars.
A Peak Golden Core tyrant who cultivated the brutal *Earth-Splitting Asura Body*, Tie Kuang had spent two hundred years crushing independent prospectors, executing wildcat mining clans, and locking the Iron Pavilion’s grip around every rich vein in three western provinces. He stood at the Ninth Revolution of the Golden Core—half a step from the realm of the Nascent Soul.
Leaning against his basalt armrest was his trademark: the **Mountain-Crushing Warhammer**.
Two thousand pounds of meteoric dark-iron, mounted on a six-foot haft of petrified dragon-bone. A blunt, brutal chunk of ordnance capable of flattening a fortified gate tower with one casual sweep.
Before the dais knelt three trembling scouts.
Their heavy hide mining cloaks hung in shredded, scorched ribbons. The plates of their breastplates were warped, their faces and forearms covered in raw, weeping blisters from the scalding steam blast that had gutted the Sunset Peak vanguard three days back. They pressed their foreheads against the cold obsidian flags, teeth clicking in rhythm.
"Speak," Tie Kuang growled.
His voice was a deep, gravelly grinding—like two tectonic fault plates shifting under ten thousand tons of overburden.
"Where is Director Tie Feng? Where are the thirty-one heavy drill enforcers? Why did our scrying link go dark?"
"G-Grand Elder..." the lead scout stammered, his forehead smacking the floor with a wet, bloody thud. "The... the mountain fought back! We set our base camp along the dry wash. Director Tie Feng took the lead snail-boring skiff into the granite face. They drove forty-two meters... breached an open void... and then... within three breaths, all thirty-one men were gone! Clean gone!"
"Gone?" Tie Kuang’s amber eyes narrowed into murderous slits. Dark crimson Asura qi bled from his pores, hazing the air around the throne in a greasy red shimmer. "A Late Golden Core director and thirty armored elites simply vanished into thin air inside a rock hole?!"
"Yes, Grand Elder! No clash! No blood on the stone! Zero sword-beams!" the scout wept, holding up his raw, blistered hands. "And then... the abyss blew! A white pillar of scalded demon-vapor erupted three hundred cubits into the sky! It ripped through the camp like grapeshot! Four-ton wagons tossed like dry kindling! The monitor lizards broke their traces and bolted! Director Tie Feng... we think he was swallowed whole by an ancient subterranean horror, or incinerated by an earth dragon's lung!"
Tie Kuang brought his bare fist down on the stone armrest.
*BOOM!*
The concussive snap blew outward across the hall. Spiderweb fractures shot across the basalt dais, splintering two decorative stone braziers into flying gravel.
"Worthless cowards!" Tie Kuang roared, the sound rattling the iron rafters overhead. "An unmapped aquifer?! A pocket of pocket steam?! And you dropped your picks and ran like whipped curs, abandoning our imperial drill rigs in the mud?!"
"Grand Elder, wait! Please, look upon this!"
A sleek figure stepped smoothly from the shadow of the flanking pillars.
Vice-Director Lu, head of the cartel’s intelligence and trade arm. The man wore immaculate mulberry silk, his cuffs spotless despite the soot drifting through the hall. In his manicured hands, Lu carried a small, sealed red-sandalwood box lined with golden velvet, cradling it like an imperial edict.
"What is that trash?" Tie Kuang spat, glaring at the box with open disgust. "I have thirty armored men missing in the western mountains, and you bring me pill boxes?!"
"This is no medicinal pill, Supreme Elder," Lu murmured, his voice tight with an awe that bordered on terror. "Our trade agents at the Canglan Provincial Border Fair purchased this three hours ago. A secret auction lot put up by the Clear Sky Sect. They paid forty-two thousand High-Grade Spirit Stones for this single box."
Tie Kuang let out a barking laugh. "Forty-two thousand High-Grade stones?! Have the merchants in this province lost their collective minds?! What could possibly be inside that cedar box to warrant forty-two thousand stones?!"
Lu didn't answer. Slowly, with measured reverence, he lifted the sandalwood lid.
Inside, nestled on the tufted gold velvet, lay a single blue curl of turned metal.
No longer than a thumbnail. Twisted into a tight, curling spiral, glittering with iridescent sapphire light under the flickering forge lamps.
Tie Kuang stared at it. His brow furrowed into a deep, thunderous scowl. "A lathe curl? A scrap of machine swarf?! You paid forty-two thousand spirit stones for shop sweepings?!"
"Test it, Grand Elder," Lu whispered, stepping back two paces and bowing low. "Strike it with the hammer."
Tie Kuang rose from the basalt dais like a dark monolith. His bulk seemed to suck the heat right out of the room. He reached down with his left hand, closing thick, scarred fingers around the dragon-bone haft of the two-thousand-pound Mountain-Crushing Warhammer, lifting the two-ton mass of meteoric iron as effortlessly as a carpenter picking up an eight-ounce claw hammer.
With his thumb and forefinger, Tie Kuang plucked the tiny blue metal curl from the velvet bed. He placed it squarely on the face of an ancient Cold-Iron anvil resting before the dais.
The anvil was a relic: four feet across, forged from five-thousand-year-old deep-shelf meteor iron, quenched in glacial brine. It had taken ten thousand blows from master smiths without so much as a dimple in its polished face.
"If this is a jester's prank, Lu," Tie Kuang rumbled, "I will feed your bones to the draft drakes."
Tie Kuang set his iron-shod boots into the stone.
He drew upon the Ninth Revolution of his Golden Core. Crimson Asura qi erupted along his meridians like boiling pitch, swirling down his thick forearms and engulfing the dark-iron warhammer until the weapon screamed with the shriek of a caged cyclone.
With a roar that tore dust from the vaulted roof, Tie Kuang brought the two-thousand-pound head down with the full, unyielding mass of an avalanche!
*CLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG——!*
The kinetic blast hit the hall like a thunderbolt.
Every windowpane in the high clerestory blew out in a sheet of falling diamond shards. Bronze sconces tore from the walls. Five Foundation-stage guards dropped to their knees, clutching their ears as blood dripped between their fingers.
Tie Kuang himself was driven backward three heavy strides, his iron boots carving deep gouges into the obsidian floor!
A savage, white-hot shockwave of kinetic rebound traveled straight back up the dragon-bone haft, through his palms, and into his elbows, numbing his wrists instantly and sending a sickening throb of bone-pain into his collarbones!
His fingers lost their grip. The Mountain-Crushing Warhammer slipped from his hands, clattering across the flags with a hollow, echoing *CLANG*.
Tie Kuang stared at the weapon.
In the center of the two-thousand-pound meteoric iron face, an exact, millimeter-deep concave impression of a curled metal shaving was permanently stamped into the indestructible surface.
His eyes drifted down to the Cold-Iron anvil.
The five-thousand-year-old anvil was split clean in half.
A jagged, yawning fissure tore from crown to base, weeping microscopic iron flakes.
And resting in the middle of that split...
Completely unbent, completely unscratched, completely unmarked, glowing with serene, sapphire warmth... lay the tiny blue curl.
The Great Obsidian Hall fell dead silent. The only sound was the distant hiss of quench tanks three levels down.
Tie Kuang's knees gave out.
The eight-foot titan sank down before the shattered anvil. His scarred, calloused fingers hovered half an inch above the blue curl, trembling violently. He didn't dare touch it.
"This isn't spirit iron..." Tie Kuang breathed, his voice cracking with sheer, unadulterated awe. "Zero crystal defects... absolute structural inertia... pure solar heat fused into the living marrow of an ancient dragon... This is **Cosmic Star-Steel**! Divine-Grade alloy spoken of only in the forbidden records of the Central Heavens!"
"The Clear Sky Sect claims they struck an ancient 'Heavenly Dragon Vein' beneath Sunset Peak," Vice-Director Lu said, his eyes burning with predatory greed. "They sold ten boxes of these scrap shavings at the trade fair, Grand Elder! Cleared over four hundred thousand spirit stones in an afternoon! They're treating this metal like worthless slag! They're sitting on a mountain of it!"
Tie Kuang’s chest rose and fell like a bellows.
The shock faded, burned away by a surge of savage, all-consuming ambition that made his blood run hot.
"Clear Sky Sect..." Tie Kuang snarled, his lips pulling back over yellow teeth in a feral grin. "A third-rate mountain redoubt of cabbage farmers and cowardly monks! Their Sect Master is a soft, mid-stage Golden Core weakling! How could they possess the Dao comprehension to refine Cosmic Star-Steel?! They couldn't! They must have cracked the tomb of a First Epoch Immortal Emperor... or they're harboring an injured heretic smith!"
He scooped the blue curl into his palm. The faint solar heat vibrated gently against his rough skin.
"This metal doesn't belong to monks. It belongs to the Iron Pavilion! To the Great Yan Empire! To me!"
Tie Kuang surged upright to his full height, his roar echoing through the citadel corridors like a call to arms:
"Sound the Dragon-Bellowing War Horns! Mobilize the First Armored Vanguard! Rouse the twelve **Subterranean Siege Golems** from the lower armory! And break the imperial blood-seals on the deepest excavation vault..."
His amber eyes flared with crimson fire as he thrust his fist toward the western sky:
"Deploy the **Nine-Heavens Earth-Drill Colossus**! We march on Sunset Peak! In three days, I will crack that mountain open like an egg, tear the Star-Steel from their cold hands, and grind every soul who resists under our treads!"
