The silence inside Subterranean Floor 1 settled like wet wool over an anvil.

Hot ozone drifted off the slate distribution board, sour and sharp, tangling with the scorched mineral reek of transformer oil and the dry, bitter chalk of pulverized basalt. Thirty yards away, down in the aggregate basin, five hundred imperial miners were whimpering under their breath, tangled together in an undignified heap of dented iron, twisted pikes, and bruised shins.

In the center of the hall, Supreme Grand Elder Tie Kuang stood pinned by his own disbelief.

Every scrap of battle instinct honed over two centuries warned him to turn and sprint for the sunlit surface. His boots, however, refused to budge. His amber eyes locked onto the five-foot Cosmic Star-Steel pipe wrench resting against Austin's collarbone. The tool's iridescent blue I-beam handle caught the overhead shop lanterns, throwing faint azure ripples across the ceiling arches.

Austin stood with one hip cocked. His weight rested lazily on his trailing heel. He held his clipboard in his left hand, looking less like an immortal sword deity and more like an overworked county code inspector who had caught a developer running illegal flex pipe into a municipal storm drain.

Tie Kuang’s mouth felt full of dry sand. His knuckles twitched against the bronze shaft of his Mountain-Crushing Warhammer, the metal clattering rhythmically against his spiked iron greaves with a hollow, humiliating ring.

"You..." Tie Kuang rasped, his voice tearing like dry butcher paper. He swallowed hard, forcing the words past a swollen throat. "What manner of ancient demon hides beneath this dirt? What old heresy dug these shafts?! The Nether-Earth Ancestral Hall? The Broken Mountain Lineage?! Speak!"

Austin opened his mouth to tell the old man to check his blood pressure, but the words died on his tongue.

A golden geometric cascade flashed behind his retinas.

*DING.*

The chime hit right between his temporal lobes—crisp, resonant, like a brass ball bearing dropping onto an anvil in a quiet garage.

Down in Austin's lower belly, within the conceptual pocket of his dantian, the miniature sun pulled itself together.

The thermal crucible contracted. Under the interlocking geometry of the First Epoch Containment Mesh, the swirling cloud of hydrogen-helium plasma collapsed thirty percent inward, condensing into a dense, blinding sphere of stellar iron-core fire.

Ninety-nine point nine-nine-eight percent of the apocalyptic fury remained locked behind the containment grid. That leftover microscopic fraction, however, carried real mass.

Thirty-one quintillion kilograms of dense stellar nucleus.

And mass commands gravity.

*CRACK.*

A sudden, crushing shockwave slammed down from the cavern ceiling.

The air compressed instantly. Atmospheric density multiplied fivefold in the space of a heartbeat. Stray motes of shale dust were yanked straight out of the draft, smacking the obsidian floor tiles with tiny, audible clicks. Overhead, the heavy copper busbars on the rough-in electrical board sagged an extra quarter-inch in their porcelain standoffs. The amber mineral oil inside the transformer sight glass dropped its meniscus, bubbling sluggishly as the fluid suddenly grew five times heavier.

Austin glanced toward the north wall, squinting at the oil-cooled step-down transformer. High gravity was hell on natural thermosiphon circulation. If the dense mineral oil couldn't cycle up through the cooling fins, the primary winding would bake its own paper insulation in under an hour. He'd have to jury-rig an auxiliary impeller pump just to keep the dielectric fluid moving across the iron core.

Beneath Austin's boots, the mirror-polished floor tiles let out an agonizing, grinding screech. Microscopic hairline cracks raced across the grout lines, tracking the natural fault lines in the subterranean bedrock.

Over beneath the secondary cast-iron workbench, the three draft pangolins—Chonker, Digger One, and Digger Two—flattened out like scaly doormats. Chonker buried his snout between his front claws, letting out a series of low, muffled squeaks as his armored shell was pressed hard into the stone. Beside them, Li Xiaoyao dropped flat on his belly, his yellow hard hat clattering against the rock as his chin was driven into the dust.

Ten yards away, Tie Kuang choked.

The breath blew out of his lungs in a ragged wheeze. His eyeballs bulged against his eyelids, red capillaries bursting across the whites.

*THUD.*

Five mountain ridges slammed onto the old warlord's shoulders at once.

Tie Kuang’s knees buckled. His iron-plated greaves punched three inches into the solid basalt floor as if the rock were warm wax. His fingers gave out; the two-thousand-pound Mountain-Crushing Warhammer tore from his numb palms and cratered the tiles with a deafening *WHUMP*, blowing out a two-foot ring of shattered stone chips that whistled across the room like shrapnel.

He tried to cycle his Peak Golden Core. He commanded the magma-earth qi in his meridians to rise and brace his collapsing spine. The instant the energy surged, the crushing gravitational gradient clamped down, squeezing his internal channels flat like pinched hydraulic hoses.

*GRAVITY DAO?!* Tie Kuang screamed into the silence of his skull. Blood welled from his gums, pooling under his tongue. *His core didn't flash! No mudras! No incantations! No domain talismans! Pure, effortless domain suppression! The fabric of the earth itself is bowing to him like iron filings to a lodestone! He is a living, walking planetary body!*

Over in the Basalt Slag Holding Basin, five hundred elite miners and Director Tie Feng groaned in unison, pancaked flat against the gravel like dough under a rolling pin.

"Mother..." a sergeant gasped, his cheek mashed so hard against the stone that his mouth dragged sideways. "The mountain... the mountain just fell on us... I can't lift my fingers... my chest plates are buckling..."

Director Tie Feng lay flat on his back, his breath wheezing out in tiny, pathetic puffs. The pickled turnip peel stuck to his forehead was pressed against his skin like a lead rivet.

"Stay down, boys," Tie Feng croaked through clenched teeth. "Don't fight the floor. The floor always wins. I told you the tea was an omen. You didn't listen. Now we're patio pavers."

In the center of the hall, Austin lifted his left work boot.

*Clomp.*

The boot hit the floor with a dull, heavy thump that rattled his own teeth.

Austin paused. He lifted his right foot, shifted his hips, and stared down at his scuffed leather toe caps with a deep, sour frown. He rolled his ankles, feeling a thick, gelatinous drag in the air around his calves.

"Oh, come on," Austin grunted, rolling his shoulders with an irritated wince. "Server lag? Seriously? A five percent speed debuff?"

He tapped the flashing yellow encumbrance icon in the upper-right corner of his HUD.

"Classic janky physics engine," Austin muttered under his breath, shaking his head. "Hit a milestone level, and the system developers immediately overcompensate for player mass. 'Realistic inertia.' What absolute garbage. Now my center of gravity is all out of whack. Feels like wading through three feet of wet concrete."

He didn't panic. Job site snags were just mechanical problems waiting on the right adjustment.

Austin turned toward his steel rolling tool cabinet. His strides were heavy and deliberate, each step leaving a faint powdery imprint of his boot tread on the stressed floor tiles.

He reached the toolbox, grabbed the handle of the reinforced bottom drawer, and yanked it open against the crushing gravity.

Rumble-slide.

Resting beneath a tangle of heavy-duty C-clamps were two curved, three-quarter-inch-thick slabs of forged lead—weighted boot liners he had poured earlier that week to use as magnetic ballast anchors when welding inside high-velocity draft flues.

Austin hauled a steel crate over, sat down, and unbuckled his leather boots.

He slipped the heavy lead liners directly into the footbeds, right over the double-stitched leather insoles. He slid his wool-socked feet back inside, pulled the thick nylon laces taut, and double-knotted them with two sharp tugs.

He stood up and stomped both heels down.

*THUMP. THUMP.*

Twenty extra pounds of deadweight settled straight under his arches. The low-slung ballast immediately anchored his pelvic girdle, counterbalancing the gravitational drag pulling at his upper torso.

"There," Austin said, nodding to himself. He took three quick, rhythmic strides across the cracked obsidian floor, checking his posture. "Much better. You don't fight a bad mass debuff with agility points. You drop your ballast, widen your stance, and let physics do the work. Good for the lower back anyway. Builds calf endurance."

Behind the wooden pallets, Li Xiaoyao managed to twist his neck an inch to the side, his teeth chattering like loose gravel in a cement mixer.

"S-Senior Austin..." Xiaoyao whimpered. "You... you walk within this crushing gravity field as if it were a spring meadow... even the Earth-Dragon plate of the Grand Elder is warping like tin foil... what manner of physical godhood is this?!"

Austin didn't look over. He was already leaning over the workbench, picking up his pressed-fiber clipboard.

He checked the brass clip. Snapped his yellow grease pencil twice.

He flipped to a fresh carbon slip and jotted down three neat lines:

*Item 1: Unauthorized Structural Penetration of Eastern Load-Bearing Basalt Wall.* *Item 2: Cleanroom Particulate Mitigation Surcharge (500 units).* *Item 3: Unpermitted Rotary Excavation and Spoil Dumping.*

He checked his pocket notebook, calculating the cubic yards of structural epoxy grout needed to seal the twelve-foot hole behind the Colossus.

"And another five bags of rapid-set hydraulic cement for the perimeter footing," Austin muttered, clicking his pencil again. "Plus the overtime on the air scrubber and the cost to flush the transformer oil reservoir if this heavy gravity curdles the fluid."

Clipboard tucked securely under his arm, Austin turned back toward Supreme Grand Elder Tie Kuang.

The old warlord was still pinned to the cracked tiles like an insect under a glass slide. His crimson beard was smashed into the basalt dust, a steady trickle of dark blood leaked from both nostrils, and the spiked iron rivets on his breastplate were popping out under the relentless five-gravity load.

Austin walked over, his lead-weighted boots thudding rhythmically against the stone. He stopped two paces away, looked down over the rim of his safety glasses, and cleared his throat.

"Alright, sir," Austin said, his tone dry as unbuttered toast. "Now that the server lag is handled and I've calibrated my ballast... let's get back to this retaining wall invoice."
