Chapter 067: Level 32 Milestone: The Chandrasekhar Threshold

The sudden drop in Austin’s gut felt like an overloaded freight elevator snapping its hoist cables over a deep mine shaft.

Standing on the fractured jade dais, forty-pound server terminal clamped tight against his ribs, he felt his lower dantian cave inward. The kinetic wallop of ten thousand supersonic blades, paired with forty-five tons of electromagnetic back-emf channeled straight down the tool steel, had hammered his internal furnace past its theoretical limit. The White Dwarf Seed had slammed full-bore into its final quantum stop.

*DING.*

A clear, glassy chime vibrated through the marrow of his bones, rattling his molars like a rotary hammer on low speed.

Down in the dark of his core, the pearl-sized stellar seed flared to three hundred thousand Kelvin.

The electrons within were moving near the speed of light now. Bound by the Pauli exclusion principle, they pushed back against gravity with raw degeneracy pressure—the absolute last physical barrier before atomic matter collapses into a solid lump of neutrons. Core mass jumped from sixty-eight to ninety-five quintillion kilograms. The mass of a medium-sized planetary asteroid, squeezed into a space no bigger than a songbird’s egg.

The First Epoch Containment Mesh held firm around the microscopic furnace, locking down ninety-nine point nine nine eight percent of the gravitational sinkhole.

That left a tiny leak. Zero point zero zero two percent.

On an ordinary job site, zero point zero zero two percent was acceptable bleed for an air compressor fitting. In astrophysics, it meant Austin’s localized gravitational footprint spiked straight to **Twelve Times Earth Gravity**.

*CRACK-CRUNCH-THUMP!*

An invisible hydraulic press slammed downward across the Grand Martial Arena.

The thirty-foot pyramid of ten thousand cold-iron swords beside Austin’s boots let out a horrifying, metallic squeal:

*SKRRRRRR-CRUNCH-SQUEAL!*

Under twelve gravities of downward acceleration, the thirty-foot mountain of steel pancaked ten feet in a split second. The crushing force ground past the surface hardness of the cold-iron, friction-welding and cold-pressing the blades into a solid, monolithic block of compressed scrap that rang like a hundred-ton church bell.

Up in the grandstands, two hundred thousand spectators dropped flat against the stone risers.

Cheeks sagged toward jawbones. Lungs fought for air against leaden rib cages. Heavy bronze shoulder guards groaned under twelve times their rated weight, shearing brass rivets with sharp, deafening pings. Glazed teapots burst into shards on side tables, wooden sunshades snapped like dry pine twigs, and decorative wrought-iron railings bent groggily toward the dirt.

In the elevated royal box, Governor Zhao and twenty senior council elders lay plastered to the floorboards like wet cardboard specimens in an herbarium.

"T-Twelve... twelve gravities..." Governor Zhao wheezed, lips pulled sideways against the frosted rug until spit ran into his ear. Blood welled from his nostrils as his chest hitched against the heavy air. "The firmament itself is bowing... He walks with the weight of an entire mountain range on his neck..."

Grandmaster Ouyang couldn’t squeeze out a full word. The old smith simply clawed the sandalwood floor, fingernails leaving deep white gouges as twelve atmospheres of simulated pressure pinned his lungs to his spine.

Beside Austin, Li Xiaoyao only stayed upright because the First Epoch containment field curved around him in a tight, three-foot safety envelope. The kid blinked, white-faced and trembling, hugging Austin’s birch clipboard to his chest while two hundred thousand grown men groaned in the dirt around them.

"M-Master..." Xiaoyao whispered, his voice squeaking as he watched a heavy stone railing shear off fifty feet away. "The air... the air smells like crushed gravel and scorched transformer oil... is the mountain caving in?"

"Just a localized pressure differential," Austin replied calmly, nudging the boy’s elbow. "Check your footing, keep your chin tucked, and don't lean over the yellow perimeter line. You step outside this envelope right now, and you'll pancake your boots. Grab your pencil and log the reading: twelve gravities ambient, zero structural rebar in the floor slab."

"Y-Yes, Master!" Xiaoyao stammered, pulling a stubby graphite pencil from behind his ear with shaking fingers. He scribbled rapidly in the corner of the site log: *Site condition: twelve-fold gravity spike. Unreinforced stonework failing across all quadrants. Apprentice forward mobility severely compromised.*

At their feet, Cerberus Pug lay sprawled on its thick belly inside the safety perimeter. The dog’s three snub-nosed heads rested heavy on its front paws, snorting through six dark nostrils as the ambient mass settled over the arena floor. Even with the slight fringe drag pulling at its loose jowls, the pup showed zero intention of abandoning its prize. The middle head held the sharkskin scabbard tight against the stone while the left and right heads took turns gnawing through the brass throat fittings with dull, wet crunches.

Austin reached down with a calloused thumb, scratching behind the pup's middle ears. Cerberus Pug let out a muffled snort of pure bliss, and all three stubby tail nubs kept up a steady, rhythmic thump-thump-thump against the cracked jade.

Austin looked down at his boots, scowling deeply.

The white jade pavers beneath his steel toes had spiderwebbed, crumbling into fine white talc under his heels.

*Typical municipal bidding,* Austin thought, shaking his head with a tired sigh. *Poured a half-inch decorative limestone veneer over porous volcanic tuff. No rebar cage. No compressive grout injection. Zero compaction testing on the base aggregate. If I bounce on my heels right now, I’m punching straight down into the storm sewer culvert.*

Then he caught a flicker of cyan light circling his shins.

His micro-planetary ring system had expanded again.

The original twelve river pebbles and thirty dried pine needles were now joined by forty-two razor-sharp curls of cold-iron peeled from the crushed sword pile.

Eighty-four individual orbital particles spun in three neat, concentric, counter-rotating tracks around his calves. They hummed at a soothing, high-pitched whine like ceramic machine bearings running at ten thousand RPM, slicing the air into faint rings of pale blue light.

Austin lifted his right boot to test the drag.

*Clomp.*

The heel struck the stone with the dead weight of an industrial drop-hammer. His hamstrings and hip flexors burned under the sudden inertia.

"Twelve percent movement penalty," Austin grumbled, clicking his tongue in annoyance. "Physics engine is calculating way too much air resistance and joint drag. Feels like I’m trudging through three feet of wet foundation mud in size-thirteen muck boots."

He reached down with his free hand, digging into his tool belt pouches to adjust the brass balance washers on his work harness: *Clack, clack.*

"Gotta re-rig my walk cycle when I get back to Sunset Peak," Austin muttered. "High-mass character models always suffer from clipping issues if the normal maps aren't baked right. My collision box is fighting my own mesh boundaries."

Up in the air, eighty feet above the sand, Jiang Taixu was losing altitude fast.

Not by choice.

The twelve-gravity sinkhole had caught the Sword Saint like an anchor dropped into a swamp.

His lone Glacial Cold-Iron broadsword bowed into a sickening U-shape beneath his multiplied body weight. The delicate levitation arrays carved into the fuller began spitting blue electrical fire: *BZZZZZT-SPARK!*

Jiang Taixu’s face was painted with dried black blood. His pristine crane-feather robes hung in shredded, greasy ribbons, his silver hair was plastered to his skull with cold sweat, and the fracture across his Golden Core was pulsing like a cracked engine block under heavy throttle.

He could feel the monstrous gravitational well dragging him down toward that blue hard hat.

Jiang Taixu knew, with the cold clarity of a dying man, that the second his boots hit the stone inside that twelve-gravity field, his bones would turn to powder and his organs would splash like overripe melons across the jade.

Four hundred years on the mountain.

He was the Southern Sword Saint. The sovereign who had cleaved barbarian vanguards with a flick of his wrist. An elder before whom provincial governors bowed their heads.

He wasn't going out like a crushed beetle under a laborer’s boot heel.

"IF I MUST FALL TODAY..." Jiang Taixu’s voice tore from his shredded throat, raw and rattling like gravel in a tin bucket, "...THEN MY SWORD WILL SPLIT THE BONES OF THIS WORLD IN TWO!"

*BOOM!*

Jiang Taixu bit clean through the tip of his own tongue.

A spray of golden heart-blood—the concentrated marrow of four centuries of cultivation—erupted across the bent steel of his broadsword.

**[Taboo Ancient Art: Heaven-Severing Void-Splitting Slash]**!

The Sword Saint threw his entire Nascent Soul seed into the fire, igniting every drop of spiritual fuel in one suicidal flare. It was the desperate gambit of an unqualified operator bypassing the safety interlocks on a high-voltage transformer after letting the coils cook themselves past thermal runaway.

The bent broadsword vanished.

The metal didn’t shatter into fragments or melt into slag. It collapsed out of the three-dimensional universe entirely, shrinking into a razor-thin, two-dimensional slit of pitch-black nothingness.

A dimensional fissure. A direct severance of local coordinate space that skipped physical distance, ignored conventional armor, and cut straight through the geometric matrix of reality.

The black seam measured less than a millimeter wide, humming with the terrifying, muffled quiet of a total vacuum. Light bent around its edges, swallowed into the dark. Dust motes vanished into the slit without a sound.

The tear locked onto the center ridge of Austin’s midnight-blue safety hard hat and plunged downward.

*"DIE, HEAVENLY FIEND!"* Jiang Taixu screamed, eyes turning chalk-white as his life-force burned out like a spent flare. *"SEVER THE HEAVENS——!"*

The spatial blade tore down at the speed of thought.

Down on the cracked dais, Austin stopped adjusting his harness washers.

He tilted his head back, peering through his spectacles at the hair-thin black seam dropping out of the sky.

His eyebrows knit into a deep, irritated scowl.

"Now he’s cutting into my spatial boundary box," Austin said, his flat contractor voice thick with annoyance. "I just spent two days locking my frame rate to sixty FPS, and now this clown is trying to clip through the level geometry with an unpatched physics exploit."

Austin shifted his grip on the **Five-Foot Stellar-Steel Pipe Wrench**.

He brought the twenty-pound, iridescent blue tool up, giving the knurled brass adjustment nut a smooth, one-handed roll to back the hardened tool-steel jaws open by exactly three inches. The Acme threads glided with the oiled perfection of brand-new shop equipment.

He stood his ground. Feet planted, balance centered.

He angled the serrated jaws directly into the path of the falling void tear.

The spatial slash arrived.

The wrench was waiting.
