Chapter 136: Floor 4: Siege Golem Patrol Lanes

Exiting the sub-zero chill and whistling drafts of Floor 3 through the heavy insulated airlock threshold, the Grand Crusader Alliance stepped out onto the expansive concrete concourse of Floor 4.

The transition was jarring in its sheer physical comfort. The airlock doors sealed behind them with a muffled pneumatic thump, and the temperature instantly normalized to a pleasant, well-ventilated sixty-eight degrees Fahrenheit. Relative humidity sat at a crisp forty-five percent, maintained by industrial ceiling air handlers humming softly in the shadows overhead.

For several heartbeats, the frostbitten crusaders simply stood in place, sighing with profound relief as the icicles melted from their eyelashes and the stiffness drained from their frozen knuckles.

Yet any sense of ease vanished the moment their eyes swept across the vast subterranean staging bay.

Floor 4 was an excavation terminal that dwarfed the imperial parade grounds of the capital.

Carved out of solid granite bedrock by Austin's automated drill rigs, the chamber stretched for nearly half a mile beneath a sixty-foot ceiling supported by massive, structural steel wide-flange columns. Each steel column was bolted to concrete footings with heavy anchor plates, and every single column base was wrapped to a height of four feet in bright yellow high-density foam collision guards.

Across the polished, light-gray epoxy-coated concrete floor ran an intricate network of painted transit markings. Wide, four-inch-thick pedestrian safety walkways painted in vibrant safety yellow were bordered on either side by double solid white lines that clearly demarcated active heavy vehicle lanes.

High-pressure sodium-vapor floodlights bathed the cavern in warm, amber illumination, casting long, geometric shadows across the polished floor.

Suddenly, a rhythmic, penetrating electronic sound echoed through the vaulted expanse:

*BEEP... BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...*

The sound was sharp, high-pitched, and completely devoid of human emotion. It repeated at unvarying intervals of exactly eight hundred milliseconds.

From the darkened mouth of the north transit corridor, the floor began to tremble with deep, rhythmic tremors. Heavy steel treads clattered against concrete, accompanied by the low, guttural growl of a turbocharged multi-fuel industrial diesel engine.

A monolithic silhouette emerged into the amber light.

It was one of Austin’s twelve **Subterranean Heavy Siege Golems**—a thirty-foot-tall, forty-ton industrial behemoth fabricated from welded Grade-5 titanium armor plate, heavy cast-steel swing castings, and polished hydraulic cylinders thick as tree trunks. Rolling smoothly forward on twin steel-cleated continuous tank treads, the machine moved with terrifying, unstoppable mechanical mass.

Stenciled across its armored front ballast counterweight in crisp, high-visibility black lettering was the designation: *UNIT 04: CATERPILLAR CLASS*. Mounted atop its operator cab was an amber rotating strobe beacon, flashing in perfect synchronization with the piercing backup alarm:

*BEEP... BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...*

Behind Unit 04 rumbled three more identical siege golems, their front-end loader arms raised in travel position. And trotting contentedly along the vehicle lane beside the machines was a twenty-foot-long armored monstrosity covered in interlocking diamond-hard scales: *Chonker*, the alpha Earth-Drill Pangolin.

The massive beast held an eighty-pound lump of solidified copper slag in its front paws, crunching through the metallic rock like a child eating peanut brittle, its tail swaying lazily behind it.

Overhead, suspended from an overhead steel cable bridge, hung a wide enameled yellow informational sign:

DEV CONSOLE
STANDALONE HOST
[FLOOR 4 HEAVY EQUIPMENT STAGING: PEDESTRIAN PROTOCOL]
1. Heavy equipment has ABSOLUTE right-of-way at all times.
2. Stay strictly within the Yellow Painted Pedestrian Lanes.
3. Jaywalkers and unauthorized lane obstructions will be
cleared by automated grapple buckets into Safety Pens.

Patriarch Guang Ming’s hands tightened around his Solar Godblade, his pupils contracting with dread:

"The **Iron Titan Guardians of the Nether-Void**! And the **Diamond Earth-Devouring Leviathan**! These are the ancient war engines of the First Epoch! Look at their flashing amber halos—they are warning beacons of impending doom!"

Commander Zhao Ba, standing near the front of the ranks, felt his warrior blood boil within his chest.

He had survived the tumbling humiliation of the conveyor belts; he had braved the molten slag gutters and retrieved the titanium billets from beneath the falling obsidian hammer; he had chipped ice from the frost grates with his own daggers. His martial pride demanded a true, glorious test of combat.

"Patriarch!" Zhao Ba roared, stepping forward in his heavy clanking plate. "We have endured the demon lord's traps and trials! But here stands a beast of iron and steel that walks upon the earth! Let me test my blade against this First Epoch titan! For the glory of the Radiant Sun Sect!"

"Brother Zhao, be cautious!" Grand Abbot Wu Nian warned, clutching his khakkhara staff. "The yellow runes upon the placard speak of absolute right-of-way!"

"I am a peak Golden Core vanguard commander!" Zhao Ba bellowed, his eyes wild with battle lust. "No machine of mere metal possesses right-of-way over the righteous will of Heaven!"

Ignoring the warnings, Zhao Ba charged forward. He bounded straight over the four-inch yellow pedestrian boundary, crossed the double solid white lines, and planted himself directly in the center of Vehicle Lane Alpha, right in the direct path of the oncoming Caterpillar-Class Golem.

Unit 04 continued forward at a steady five miles per hour:

*BEEP... BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...*

Zhao Ba drew his five-foot greatsword with both hands. He drew upon the entirety of his dantian's spiritual reserves, channeling every drop of golden solar qi into the steel blade until it ignited with blinding, sun-bright fury:

"**Heaven-Sundering Radiant Cleave!**"

With a ferocious roar, Zhao Ba brought the greatsword down in a devastating two-handed overhead slash. A forty-foot crescent of compressed golden sword aura erupted from the blade, screaming through the air and crashing dead-center into the lower lip of Golem Unit 04's front excavator bucket.

*DING.*

No explosion roared. Only a crisp, metallic chime rang out—the sound of an empty soup can tapped with a butter knife.

The razor-sharp sword aura, capable of cleaving mountain peaks and splitting ironwood galleons, struck the six-inch-thick Hardox-500 abrasion-resistant steel wear-plate lining the bucket's front edge. The divine energy scraped away a quarter-inch patch of dried clay, failed to dent the heat-treated alloy by even a fraction of a millimeter, and ricocheted off harmlessly into the ceiling rock, dislodging a small shower of dust.

Golem Unit 04 did not flinch. It did not slow down. It did not even register a spike in engine manifold pressure.

Mounted beneath the cab roof, a pair of ruggedized industrial stereoscopic optical collision-avoidance sensors scanned the vehicle lane. The golem’s programmable logic controller processed the image data in twelve milliseconds:

*OBJECT DETECTED: STATIONARY OBSTRUCTION.* *CLASSIFICATION: UNAUTHORIZED PEDESTRIAN / JAYWALKER.* *WEIGHT ESTIMATE: 310 LBS (INCLUDING METALLIC ENCLOSURE).* *ACTION REQUIRED: CLEAR ACTIVE TRANSIT LANE ACCORDING TO PROTOCOL.*

A pneumatic solenoid valve clicked:

*PFFFT!*

Twin heavy-duty double-acting hydraulic cylinders hissed as high-pressure fluid surged through braided steel hoses. The golem’s massive, eight-foot-wide Hardox steel front scoop bucket lowered smoothly to the pavement until its wear-edge rested flat against the concrete.

With the casual, unstoppable momentum of a forty-ton industrial earthmover, the bucket scooped forward across the floor.

*SHOOOOOOOVE.*

Zhao Ba’s eyes bugged out of his head. He tried to leap backward, but the speed and sheer mass of the incoming steel bucket gave him nowhere to push off.

The heavy steel lip struck him neatly behind the ankles. With a sudden, undignified yelp, Zhao Ba was flipped backward into the curved belly of the bucket, his three-ton iron greaves rattling against the steel floor like empty buckets.

Before he could scramble to his feet, the hydraulic lift arms fired:

*HSSSSSS... CLANK.*

The excavator arm smoothly hoisted Zhao Ba twenty feet into the air. The main turret swung ninety degrees to the left with smooth, hydraulic grace.

"Release me, cursed iron golem!" Zhao Ba shrieked, furiously hacking at the bucket interior with his sword pommel. "I am Commander Zhao Ba of the Radiant Sun! Face me in honorable single combat!"

The golem did not answer. Its heavy boom arm extended over a ten-foot-tall enclosure constructed from heavy-gauge galvanized chain-link fencing, reinforced with heavy pipe posts and anchored into the concrete with three-quarter-inch wedge bolts.

Mounted above the gate was a cheerful, powder-coated green sign: *VISITOR OBSERVATION & SAFETY PEN*.

Inside the enclosure sat a ten-foot-wide, four-foot-deep wooden bin filled with thousands of broken-down cardboard shipping boxes and bubble wrap left over from Austin's generator installations.

*CLANK.*

The bucket tilted downward at a clean forty-five-degree angle.

Zhao Ba slid down the slick steel chute and plummeted into the center of the enclosure.

*FLUMP.*

He landed flat on his back atop a mountain of crushed corrugated cardboard and popping bubble wrap. The landing was so soft, springy, and thoroughly shock-absorbed that every plate of his iron armor remained undented.

High above the pen, the golem’s hydraulic arm retracted with a sharp *PFFFT*. The turret rotated ninety degrees back to center, the bucket settled into its travel cradles, and Unit 04 resumed rolling down Vehicle Lane Alpha at its unvarying, fuel-efficient five miles per hour:

*BEEP... BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...*

Behind the golem, *Chonker* the Earth-Drill Pangolin waddled past the chain-link enclosure.

The colossal beast paused for a second, peering through the diamond wire mesh at the dumbfounded commander buried in cardboard. Chonker tilted his armored head, let out a wet, gravelly snort that sprayed tiny flakes of copper dust across Zhao Ba's visor, and trotted onward, chewing happily on his eighty-pound rock.

Along the pedestrian walkway, one thousand holy crusaders stood in petrified, breathless silence. Their mouths hung open; their swords hung limp in their hands.

Grand Abbot Wu Nian sank to his knees on the yellow paint, tears of overwhelming existential awe welling in his eyes:

"It... it did not even consider Brother Zhao an enemy..." Wu Nian whispered, his voice trembling so violently his teeth clicked. "Did you see its eyes? There was no rage, no bloodlust, no demonic malice. It did not crush his bones or devour his soul. It merely... scooped an eighth-layer Golden Core master like an autumn leaf from a garden path and placed him gently into the **Pen of Temporal Contemplation**!"

Patriarch Guang Ming fell to both knees beside Wu Nian, his Solar Godblade slipping from his fingers to clatter against the yellow line:

"It is the absolute, unblemished indifference of the Heavenly Dao!" Guang Ming gasped, his breath ragged with mind-melting enlightenment. "The ancient scriptures of Laozi say: *Heaven and Earth are ruthless; they regard all things as straw dogs!* To these ancient First Epoch titans, our divine swords, our martial arts, our sacred vows... are nothing more than loose dust obstructing their eternal patrol lanes!"

Guang Ming turned to face his thousand warriors, his eyes burning with fanatical, desperate reverence:

"Disciples! Look upon the yellow markings on the earth! The Sovereign has painted the Golden Path of Righteousness! The white borders represent the boundary between mortal obedience and cosmic transgression! If we step even an inch beyond the white border, the Iron Titans shall scoop our pride into contemplation! Walk single-file! Keep your arms pressed against your sides! Do not allow even the hem of your robes to stray from the yellow stripe!"

"Obey the Golden Path!" whispered nine hundred terrified crusaders.

With extreme, agonizing precision, one thousand high-level cultivators pressed their hands tight against their hips, tucked their robes inward, and began tiptoeing forward in a perfectly straight, single-file line directly atop the four-inch yellow stripe.

Inside the chain-link safety pen, Zhao Ba climbed out of the pile of cardboard boxes, brushing packing shavings from his armor. He ran to the chain-link fence, gripping the galvanized wire with both hands:

"Patriarch! Abbot Wu Nian! What about me?! You cannot leave me here!"

Guang Ming paused on the yellow line, looking back at the safety pen with profound, tearful compassion:

"Remain in your sacred pen of penance, Brother Zhao! The Dao has chosen you for quiet contemplation! Reflect upon your martial arrogance amidst the divine boxes! When we have faced the Sovereign and received his holy instructions, we shall return to release you!"

"Wait! Patriarch! There's bubble wrap in here! Patriarch!"

Zhao Ba’s desperate cries faded into the distance as the holy army continued their disciplined, single-file march down the yellow walkway.

Beside them, Golem Unit 04 rumbled into the main freight hoist bay, its amber beacon blinking rhythmically, having successfully maintained site pedestrian safety standards with zero reportable workplace incidents.
