The spatial rift tore across the low orbital sky like a ragged rupture in heavy canvas.
Twelve miles long and three miles wide, the jagged dimensional wound bled violent fringes of black-and-crimson fire into the upper vacuum. Through this tear in reality, the cold, suffocating pressure of the Upper Void Realm poured into the mortal plane, warping the trajectories of distant stars and causing the thin solar wind to hiss like water on hot iron.
And emerging from that tear, advancing in three disciplined echelons of ten, came the Grand Armada of the High Inquisitorial Tribunal.
Each dreadnought was a mile in length, forged from dense, light-absorbing Void Obsidian mined from the crushed remnants of dead solar systems. Their hulls were jagged, angular, and cruel, designed not for aerodynamic flight, but to cleave through the raw fabric of spacetime itself. Bound within the core of each dreadnought was an eighth-stage Void-Wyrm, its ancient, writhing soul harnessed by thousands of glowing astral-silver suppression runes to generate relentless, reality-cracking anti-gravity propulsion.
Hovering at the vanguard of the central battle line was the flagship: *The Sovereign Eye of Judgment*.
Upon its elevated command bridge stood Supreme Grand Inquisitor Xuan Ming.
Xuan Ming was forty thousand years old. His divine spiritual avatar stood thirty feet tall, draped in flowing robes woven from compressed galactic dust and crowned with a halo of seven revolving miniature black holes. In his right hand, he held the golden Scepter of Cosmic Retribution—a six-ton rod of solid ancient sun-gold tipped with a pulsing void-diamond capable of severing continental tectonic plates with a single downward gesture.
Beside his throne, kneeling in terrified submission upon the obsidian floor, was Junior Inquisitor Bai Ze.
Bai Ze was still wearing his stained neon-orange high-visibility vest over his torn silk robes. Clutched in his trembling hands was the 14-page municipal impoundment document Li Xiaoyao had forced him to sign, its yellow grease-pencil signatures glowing faintly under the bridge’s cold runes.
"Stand, Bai Ze," Xuan Ming’s voice rumbled like grinding tectonic plates, vibrating through the dreadnought’s obsidian deck. "You speak of a mortal who caught your divine trident with a five-foot cast-iron lever? You speak of a three-headed nether-beast that dispenses roasted eggs and barks down celestial thunder-rocs?"
"Supreme Grand Inquisitor!" Bai Ze wailed, pressing his forehead to the deck until his blood stained the silver runes. "It is not a myth! It is not madness! Look with your own divine eyes upon the firmament below! The Tower of Babel has breached the one-hundred-thousand-foot celestial ceiling! They have bound the Nine-Heaven Star-Stone to its crest like a common plumb bob!"
Xuan Ming stepped to the grand viewing crystal at the prow.
He looked down.
One hundred thousand feet below, rooted thirty kilometers deep into the mortal soil of Sunset Peak, stood the Stratospheric Skyway.
The four-legged titanium space elevator gleamed in the unfiltered sunlight, perfectly straight, perfectly plumb, completely unyielding under five million tons of tensile pre-load. At its summit, perched upon the square docking crown like an ancient crown jewel, sat the captured five-hundred-thousand-ton nickel-iron asteroid, securely bolted to four twelve-inch braided titanium-carbon cables.
And below the asteroid, illuminating the surrounding vacuum with the terrifying authority of an exawatt thermonuclear reactor, revolved the twin binary stars of Austin’s dantian.
Sol-Alpha and Sol-Beta—whipping in their 800-RPM contact orbit—flared with fifteen exawatts of pure stellar fire, casting a dual shadow of the space elevator across the white cloud decks below.
Xuan Ming’s seven revolving black-hole halos froze in mid-orbit.
The thirty-foot immortal titan gripped his golden scepter so violently that the ancient sun-gold groaned under the strain.
"Blasphemy..." Xuan Ming whispered, his voice vibrating with primeval fury that rattled the dreadnought’s bulkheads. "An abomination beyond all permissible karma! The mortal dirt-dwellers dare climb into the high heavens—and worse, they have chained a celestial star to their soil! They have built a highway for mortal feet to tread upon the celestial threshold without tribute or supplication!"
"And look at the mortal standing upon the summit spar, My Lord!" Acolyte Chen whimpered from the navigation console. "He... he is holding a white vellum parchment in a light-metal frame! And he is inspecting our fleet through dark glass lenses!"
Down on the summit catwalk of the 100,000-foot crown, Austin was indeed holding his aluminum clipboard.
He leaned one elbow against the 42-inch safety railing, tapped his ballpoint pen against his teeth, and looked up at the thirty mile-long obsidian dreadnoughts through his Shade-14 welding goggles.
Inside his retinas, his contractor HUD was working overtime, cataloging the spatial distortion above his head.
Austin let out a slow, tired sigh that fogged the inside of his gold faceplate for half a second before his ventilation fans cleared it.
"Thirty ships," Austin muttered into his helmet microphone. "Every single one of them a full mile long. And they opened a twelve-mile tear right in the middle of my upper orbital approach sector without filing a single spatial shoring permit."
He clicked his ballpoint pen and flipped to a fresh page on his clipboard.
"Look at that spatial rift," Austin grumbled, shaking his head. "Torn edges, zero temporary lagging, no interlocking steel sheet piles to hold the dimensional embankments back. If that rift undergoes a progressive edge collapse, it’ll drop forty million tons of raw vacuum turbulence right onto our asteroid tension cables! Who taught these guys how to excavate a dimensional tunnel?!"
Behind him, Tie Kuang, Jiang Taixu, and Patriarch Guang Ming stood in their pressurized white suits, staring up at the terrifying wall of black dreadnoughts with knocking knees.
"Master Chu..." Tie Kuang’s voice crackled through the UHF radio, trembling with absolute dread. "Those are the Sovereign Dreadnoughts of the High Tribunal! Each ship carries ten thousand void disciples and three hundred spatial fragmentation cannons! The golden giant at the prow... that is Supreme Grand Inquisitor Xuan Ming! In the ancient records of the First Epoch, he erased the entire Great Cloud Dynasty from existence with a single wave of that golden staff!"
"I don't care if he erased the Roman Empire, Tie Kuang," Austin replied, his voice deadpan and unbothered. "He’s operating an oversized commercial carrier fleet in a designated crane-hoist radius without anti-collision strobes. And look at their forward weapon batteries."
Austin pointed his five-foot titanium pipe wrench toward the prows of the thirty dreadnoughts.
Across the mile-long obsidian hulls, thousands of heavy gun ports were sliding open with deep, grinding groans. Massive tubular barrels forged from dark void-brass extended into the vacuum, their internal rifling glowing with an ominous, blood-red spatial radiance.
Eighty gigawatts of raw dimensional energy were condensing across the fleet's weapon manifolds, humming at a terrifying pitch that set the surrounding vacuum shivering.
"Look at those conductors," Austin observed, shaking his head in disgust. "Unshielded pulsed-discharge capacitors. Uninsulated busbars running directly along the exterior hull plates. If they fire that many pulsed-beam spatial cannons at once, the inductive back-EMF is going to generate an electrostatic transient that would fry every ungrounded transformer in three imperial provinces."
He keyed the centralized superconducting intercom line connected to the elevator mast.
"Calling Floor Nine," Austin spoke into the mic. "Floor Nine switchboard, do you copy?"
Down in the subterranean depths of Sunset Peak, thirty kilometers below, the speaker on the central electrical switchboard crackled to life.
"Floor Nine copies, Master Chu!" shouted the lead foundry apprentice, his voice loud over the hum of the cooling fans. "The water turbine is spinning at nominal, and the capacitor banks are currently sitting at ninety-two percent charge!"
"Listen carefully," Austin instructed. "Open all bypass circuit breakers on the primary copper down-conductors. Lock the solid copper busbars into the subterranean grounding loop, and prep the liquid-nitrogen cooling circuits for Banks One through Forty."
The apprentice sounded confused. "Master? Are we expecting a lightning storm on the mountain?"
"No," Austin said, looking up at the thousands of glowing void cannons aiming down the Skyway’s throat. "We’re expecting eighty gigawatts of high-voltage wild energy delivered directly to our roof. We’re going to catch the entire discharge, run it down our one-hundred-thousand-foot copper elevator cables, and top off our winter battery reserves. Don't let the apprentices touch the busbars without their rubber lineman gloves."
"Understood, Master! Lineman gloves deployed! Grounding switches locked closed!"
High above, at the prow of the flagship, Supreme Grand Inquisitor Xuan Ming raised his six-ton golden scepter high into the starry void.
His voice boomed across the vacuum, amplified by the dreadnought’s spiritual broadcast arrays until it echoed directly into the minds of every living creature across four mortal continents:
"MORTAL DIRT-DWELLERS! HEAR THE CONDEMNATION OF THE NINE FIRMAMENTS! FOR THE SIN OF ERECTING THE BABEL TOWER... FOR THE SIN OF CAPTURING THE SACRED STAR-STONE... FOR THE SIN OF DISOBEYING THE HIGH TRIBUNAL... YOUR BONES SHALL BE GROUND INTO VOID DUST! YOUR IRON HIGHWAY SHALL BE SMITTEN INTO ATOMS!"
Xuan Ming slashed the golden scepter downward with apocalyptic finality.
"ARMADA BATTERIES—FIRE! LET THE VOID RIFT THUNDERSTORM CLEANSE THE SKY!"
From the prows of thirty mile-long dreadnoughts, ten thousand spatial cannons erupted simultaneously.
A blinding, continent-spanning wall of crimson-and-black dimensional lightning exploded into the vacuum, cascading downward toward the 100,000-foot summit crown like a roaring cosmic waterfall.
Austin didn't flinch. He didn't blink.
He simply reached down, grabbed the forged handle of the summit mast’s master knife-switch, and pulled it down with a solid, echoing *KA-THUNK*.
"Right on time," Austin muttered, watching the eighty-gigawatt wave of lightning descend upon his head. "Free electricity."
