Chapter 182: Surveying the 22,000-Mile Orbit

The vacuum of low planetary orbit was, in Austin’s professional assessment, vastly superior to working at ground level for one specific reason: there was no wind to blow away his chalk lines.

Down in the valleys of the Azure Cloud Sect, setting up a straight reference line required four stakes, three cinder blocks, and constant vigilance against local mountain goats that liked to chew on yellow nylon mason’s twine. Up here, forty-two thousand kilometers above the planetary crust in circular geosynchronous orbit, an unweighted chalk line would simply drift in a pristine, mathematically motionless line until solar radiation pressure gently nudged it six weeks later.

Austin stood on the observation platform of Dreadnought Foundry Unit 01, wearing his heavy-duty thermal work boots, his reflective safety harness clipped via twin six-foot shock-absorbing lanyards to a structural titanium I-beam. Resting on a motorized three-axis tripod before him was a precision laser theodolite—a heavy brass-and-quartz transit he had fabricated in the dreadnought’s machine shop, fitted with a high-intensity helium-neon green optical diode and a vernier micrometer scale calibrated to three decimal places of arc-seconds.

Beside him, Grand Inquisitor Xuan Ming stood in his pressurized void-suit. The former terror of the Upper Void Realm was gripping a ten-foot optical target pole with both hands, his knuckles white through his reinforced insulated gauntlets. The inquisitor’s white supervisor hard hat had been sealed directly to his neck ring with aerospace-grade silicone, the yellow Monthly Safety Champion star catching the harsh, unfiltered glare of the twin suns.

"Keep the prism square to the optical sightline, Xuan Ming," Austin said over the open radio frequency, his voice perfectly level. "If you tilt that reflector five minutes of arc to the north, my radial distance readout is going to show an eight-hundred-foot elevation bump over the Western Continent. We are laying a continuous steel-truss magnetic railway that has to girdle forty thousand kilometers of circumference. We do not do elevation bumps."

"Lord Creator," Xuan Ming whispered over the comms, his voice trembling with reverent awe as he stared across the yawning curve of the world below. Through the pitch-black void, the planet rolled beneath them like a turquoise and emerald jewel, banded with swirling white cyclone spirals and illuminated by the blinding golden radiance of Austin’s binary cores. "The... the Celestial Meridian. The ancient sutras spoke of the Sovereign of the First Dawn drawing the Golden Cord of Heaven across the void to bind the mortal sphere to the wheel of fate. I hold the sacred rod of measure..."

"You are holding an aluminum-alloy survey rod with a retroreflector prism glued to the tip," Austin corrected, squinting through the transit’s optical crosshairs. "And right now your plumb is drifting three minutes of arc because you’re breathing too hard. Settle your diaphragm. Lock your knee joints."

Xuan Ming instantly suppressed his breathing, channeling his remaining Void Tribulation immortal essence into absolute muscular rigidity. To a Grand Inquisitor who had once shattered mortal mountain ranges with a wave of his golden scepter, freezing his physical body into motionless stone was trivial. Yet sweat beaded heavily across his forehead inside his visor. In his eyes, this transcended mortal surveying—this was participating in the fundamental geometry of creation. Every click of Austin’s brass micrometer felt like the turning of a cosmic key, locking the stars into eternal servitude.

Austin adjusted the lower horizontal tangent screw. *Click. Click. Click.*

Through the crosshairs, the cross-hatched reticle aligned dead-center on the green laser dot bouncing off Xuan Ming’s prism. A soft chime sounded in Austin’s heads-up display as the system integrated the orbital tracking data.

Austin nodded in quiet satisfaction. "That’s what I like to see. Clean numbers. Zero slop."

He keyed the multi-channel broadcast to the thirty converted dreadnoughts parked in a vast orbital circle around the planet.

"All foundry units, this is Lead Transit. Station One survey index is locked. Stations Two through Twelve, prepare to receive secondary alignment pings. I want laser transits established at thirty-degree equatorial increments around the entire circumference. Do not weld a single truss junction until your three-point triangulation verifies zero closure error. If your polygon doesn't close to within half an inch after twenty-six thousand miles, your crew is tearing down the section and doing it again on third shift."

Across the radio band, thirty distinct voices responded in disciplined unison.

"Foundry Unit 02 acknowledges, Lord Transit! The Southern Heaven Sector receives the holy ray!"

"Foundry Unit 05 confirms! We shall not permit half an inch of karmic error to corrupt the celestial foundation!"

Down on the forward deck of Dreadnought 01, Tie Kuang was overseeing the primary truss deployment. A massive magnetic crane arm, retrofitted from the warship's primary void-cannon mount, swung outward into the vacuum. Clamped in its jaws was a four-hundred-foot section of high-tensile titanium-nickel box girder, internally reinforced with triangular web bracing and fitted with dual superconducting magnetic levitation guide rails along its upper face.

Jiang Taixu hovered fifty feet away in a custom vacuum combat suit, his ancient longbeard stuffed uncomfortably into his neck seal. Rather than wielding a traditional sword, he held a specialized pneumatic impact wrench connected by high-pressure braided hoses to an orbital compressor tank.

"Tie Kuang!" Jiang Taixu’s voice crackled through the comms. "The docking lugs on Section Alpha-Zero-One are aligning with the secondary hub! Shall I release my sword intent to shear the temporary transit pins?"

"Put that sword away, you reckless old lunatic!" Tie Kuang roared back, tapping his tablet with a thick grease pencil. "Austin specifically instructed us: no cutting torches, no sword qi, and no spiritual flame near the guide rail faces! Those rails are machined to fifty-microinch surface finishes! If your sword qi leaves a microscopic burr on that track, the mag-lev freight sleds will throw a bearing at three thousand miles per hour! Use the hydraulic pin puller, line up the bolt holes, and torque the Grade-8 flange bolts to fourteen hundred foot-pounds using the torque wrench!"

Jiang Taixu swallowed hard, looking at the heavy chrome torque wrench in his gauntlets with profound reverence. "Fourteen hundred foot-pounds of righteous torque... The Dao of Pure Fastening is indeed merciless and exact."

High above them on the central superstructure, Austin pulled a small tin of lubricating paste from his utility pouch, smeared a fingertip across the theodolite’s azimuth bearing, and looked out across the equatorial horizon.

From this vantage point, forty-two thousand kilometers out, the true scale of the undertaking became visible. The thirty converted dreadnoughts were positioned like colossal black anvils along a faintly glowing green circle—the continuous optical laser baseline emitted from their surveyor transits. Between them, tiny silver specks—hundreds of automated robotic tugs and teams of void-suited disciples—were maneuvering box girders into position, securing them with interlocking splice plates and structural rivets.

It was the first link of the Geosynchronous Equatorial Ring: a continuous, rigid artificial structure that would encircle the entire planet, held in position by the smooth balance between planetary gravity and outward orbital speed. Once complete, it would serve as the primary orbital transit backbone for the Dyson Swarm, allowing millions of tons of processed asteroid ore, solar collector mirrors, and high-voltage power conduits to move effortlessly around the globe without burning a single drop of reaction propellant.

Beside Austin’s right hip, his tin lunchbox, utility knife, and pencil sharpener continued their slow, steady circular orbit, drifting at eighteen inches per second through his local gravitational frame-dragging field. Austin idly caught the pencil sharpener out of the air, sharpened his carpenter’s pencil with a quick twist of his wrist, and let it go. The sharpener fell back into its smooth, eight-second orbital period around his hip without missing a beat.

"You know, Xuan Ming," Austin muttered, watching the green laser beam pierce through the dark void toward Station Two, "people always complain that megastructures are unrealistic. 'Oh, Austin, the tensile strength of materials can't support a rigid ring around a planet! The hoop stress will tear the steel apart!' But they never understand basic physics. You don't build a rigid ring out of pure static tension. You build a magnetic stator ring, and inside the ring, you run a counter-rotating superconducting mass stream at twelve kilometers per second. The outward spinning force of the internal stream balances the inward gravitational pull of the planet. Net structural stress on the outer shell? Zero. It's just a continuous magnetic bearing."

Xuan Ming stood completely still, his eyes wide, his soul trembling within his chest.

*A counter-rotating river of celestial iron... running faster than the wind of heaven to hold up the sky without a pillar...* the Grand Inquisitor thought, his breath catching in his throat. *The ancient gods fought bloody wars for tens of thousands of years trying to build palaces upon clouds, yet this ancient master balances the entire cosmos using mere iron wheels and numbers!*

"Truly," Xuan Ming whispered into the radio, "Your wisdom transcends the nine heavens and the ten earths. The wheel of karma itself is but a bearing in your celestial engine."

Austin glanced sideways at him, his brow furrowing slightly behind his Shade-14 visor.

"I didn't say anything about karma, Xuan Ming. I said magnetic bearings. Neodymium-iron-boron magnets and liquid helium cooling jackets. Keep your mind on the survey rod. The reading is drifting by two hundredths of a millimeter again. Did you shift your weight?"

"I apologize, Lord Transit!" Xuan Ming gasped, instantly locking his lower spine with absolute immortal force. "I am stone! I am iron! I am zero-point-zero-zero plumb!"

"Good," Austin said, making another note on his clipboard with the freshly sharpened pencil. "Stay like that for another twenty minutes until Station Three finishes their backsight. Then we’ll break for fifteen minutes, check the torque logs on the truss pins, and start laying the first ten-mile stretch of mag-lev track."

Out in the silent expanse of space, the green laser line pulsed steadily, drawing the first ring of mankind’s grandest machine around the living world below.
