Chapter 186: The Harvester Vanguard Probes

In the four-hundred-thousand-year history of the Sovereign Star-Devouring Citadel, a Solar Siphon deployment had never once encountered what municipal utility engineers referred to as "hydraulic back-pressure."

Commander Xue Long stood upon the obsidian bridge of the vanguard flagship *Vulture’s Talon*, his four slit-pupil red eyes gleaming with cruel, predatory anticipation. Ahead of his ten-mile-long dreadnought, framed against the velvet blackness of the cosmic void, floated Sol-Beta: the secondary stellar furnace Austin had birthed when his core split in two. It was a swirling sphere of golden-white plasma, burning at fifty million Kelvin, held in tight gravitational resonance with the primary sun.

"Behold the feast!" Xue Long hissed, raising his jagged iron gauntlets toward the armored viewing viewport. "A newborn stellar ember, barely stabilized by these mortal worms! It has not yet developed the solar flare defenses of an ancient star, nor does it possess the coronal turbulence of an elder sun! For four hundred millennia, our Citadel has harvested three thousand dying stars across the deep void. We have drained the life-fire of ancient realms, leaving worlds to freeze in darkness while their emperors wept upon their knees. And now, these clay-born insects have condensed an exawatt sun right on our doorstep! It is ripe fruit waiting to be plucked! Extend the Primary Siphon Conduit! Fire the Plasma Anchor Clamps!"

From the armored underbelly of the *Vulture’s Talon*, a colossal three-mile-long pipe forged from abyssal dark-gold slid smoothly forward into the void. At its tip was a massive funnel-shaped intake maw lined with inverted spatial compression runes, glowing with a ghastly emerald luminescence designed to swallow raw stellar plasma.

*THUMMM-KRAAA.*

The spatial clamps fired. Twin beams of localized gravitational distortion struck the corona of Sol-Beta, locking onto the magnetic field lines of the core. On the bridge's glowing sensor runes, the plasma flow rate began to register in violent surges.

*"Siphon engaged!"* the tactical elder shouted triumphantly, his claws clicking against the control dais. *"Drawing primary solar plasma! Intake pressure reading: ten mega-bars... twenty mega-bars... containment tanks filling at four thousand tons of condensed star-fire per second!"*

Xue Long threw his head back and laughed, a shrill, screeching sound that echoed through the cavernous obsidian bridge. "Mortal insects! Did they truly believe they could construct a pitiful ring of iron and claim ownership over the divine fire of the cosmos? Their second sun shall be drained until it collapses into a frozen cinder, and their precious equatorial ring shall become a monument to their folly!"

Suddenly, a dull, echoing metallic *THUD* vibrated through the entire ten-mile hull of the dreadnought.

It did not sound like a spiritual talisman impact. It did not sound like a celestial lightning strike or an arcane beam weapon. It sounded like an enormous cast-iron object being struck with deliberate, measured force against a cast-iron pipe flange.

"What was that vibration?" Xue Long snapped, his four eyes darting across the tactical viewport. "Did an unmapped asteroid strike our forward deflector shields? Did the solar wind toss a piece of orbital debris into our hull?"

"No, Commander!" the sensor officer yelled, his voice rising in disbelieving panic. "Our void-deflector shields did not trigger! The contact is entirely physical! An unclassified entity has breached our spatial void-envelope and is standing directly upon the primary siphon junction!"

Xue Long magnified the exterior optical feed on the central viewing crystal.

Standing directly on top of the three-mile-long golden siphon conduit, forty thousand kilometers above the planetary sphere, was a single mortal man.

He was wearing heavy thermal denim work pants, a fluorescent orange safety vest with silver retroreflective strips, and a white fiberglass hard hat strapped securely over a dark Shade-14 welding visor. Around his waist was a well-oiled brown leather tool belt bristling with steel wrenches, and in his right hand, he held a massive, five-foot-long, heavy-duty drop-forged alloy pipe wrench.

Around his hip, a tin lunchbox, a pencil sharpener, and a utility knife were orbiting in a placid, rhythmic circle at eighteen inches per second, held by an invisible gravitational field.

Austin was looking at the golden siphon nozzle with deep, profound, and utterly unimpressed disgust.

"Look at this," Austin muttered into his helmet comms, his voice coming through loud, clear, and perfectly unmodulated on the Harvester ship's unencrypted tactical frequency. "No isolation valve before the intake manifold. No check valve. No double-block-and-bleed bypass. They just jammed a three-mile piece of unmetered ductwork directly into a fifty-million-Kelvin fusion stream. The sheer amateur hour of this operation is personally offensive to anyone who has ever held an apprentice card."

He pulled a greasy shop rag from his hip pocket, casually wiped a smudge of machine oil off the hardened steel hook jaw of his pipe wrench, and checked the knurled adjustment nut. The drop-forged alloy steel gleamed with dull industrial competence.

*"Mortal dog!"* Xue Long roared over the exterior void-speakers, his voice trembling with white-hot rage. *"Remove your filthy boots from our siphon conduit! You stand upon the sacred star-drinking instrument of the Sovereign Harvesters! One breath of our abyssal void-fire will incinerate your soul for ten thousand lifetimes!"*

Austin didn't even look up at the dreadnought's bridge viewport. He simply adjusted the knurled steel nut on his five-foot pipe wrench with a flick of his gloved thumb.

*Scritch. Scritch. Scritch.*

"I told you people on the radio," Austin said flatly, his voice echoing over their bridge speakers like an exhausted municipal building inspector on a Friday afternoon. "This is an active commercial construction corridor. You have no permit. You have no meter. You haven't filed an environmental impact report for hazardous thermal discharge. You're attempting an unauthorized high-voltage tap on primary generation infrastructure. That is a Class-A municipal utility infraction, subject to immediate, non-negotiable termination of service."

With a casual, practiced motion, Austin swung the heavy pipe wrench down onto the golden siphon's primary flow-regulation valve stem.

*CLANG!*

The hardened alloy steel teeth bit directly into the abyssal dark-gold valve metal.

A shower of blinding golden sparks erupted from the contact point. The ancient spatial runes carved into the dark-gold conduit flickered violently, crying out in metaphysical agony as their structural matrix groaned. To Xue Long's utter horror, the dark-gold alloy—forged in the heart of collapsing white dwarfs and tempered in the blood of celestial void dragons—groaned and dented under the unyielding bite of the mortal wrench.

Austin braced his boots against the conduit flange and leaned his body weight into the five-foot handle.

Because Austin now possessed a total system mass of one point two zero times ten to the twenty-third kilograms—exceeding one point six full planetary moons—and operated under a crushing seventy-G personal gravity gradient, leaning his body weight into a five-foot lever arm produced an insane mechanical leverage: approximately four hundred million foot-pounds of rotational torque.

*SCREEEEEECH.*

The golden valve stem, designed to remain open for centuries of uninterrupted star-harvesting, was violently rotated ninety degrees clockwise.

*THWACK.*

The internal valve gate slammed shut into its seat with the finality of an iron portcullis.

"Flow terminated," Austin said. "Now let's see how your uninspected piping handles back-pressure."

Inside the three-mile conduit, fifty-million-Kelvin solar plasma—traveling at sixteen hundred kilometers per second from Sol-Beta's coronal mass ejection—slammed directly into the closed steel valve gate at Mach five thousand.

With nowhere else to go, the fluid dynamics of fifty exawatts of compressed stellar energy did what fluid dynamics always does when an outlet is obstructed without a surge tank or an expansion accumulator: it reversed direction.

HYDRODYNAMIC BACK-PRESSURE SURGE: SYSTEM 04
STANDALONE HOST
Siphon Gate Status: 100% CLOSED (Mechanical Lockout)
Upstream Kinetic Plasma Energy: 50.0 Exawatts
Reflected Water-Hammer Wave Velocity: 2,400 km/s
Hydraulic Pressure Spike: 4.85 × 10^12 PSI
Target Vessel: Vanguard Flagship 'Vulture's Talon'
Containment Tank Rupture Threshold: EXCEEDED BY 840%
Safety Relief Valves: NONE FOUND (Code Violation #77.4)
Pressure Vessel Failure: IMMINENT

On the bridge of the *Vulture’s Talon*, every alarm rune turned blinding crimson and began shrieking in high-frequency terror.

"Commander!" the tactical elder shrieked, clutching his head as golden immortal blood seeped from his ears. "The plasma flow has reversed! The mortal closed the gate! An exawatt water-hammer shockwave is traveling backward up the line! Pressure gauges have pinned past the redline!"

"Open the emergency dump ports!" Xue Long screamed, his four eyes bulging in terror. "Vent the tanks into the void! Dump the plasma into open space!"

"We don't have dump ports!" the elder wailed, tearing at his robes. "Ancient dogma dictated that celestial harvesters never surrender a single drop of stolen star-fire! The master builders never installed pressure relief valves so we could maximize tank storage capacity!"

"You didn't install relief valves?!" Xue Long bellowed in sheer, unadulterated horror.

Before the Harvester commander could take another breath, the fifty-exawatt shockwave reached the dreadnought's central containment hold.

*KABOOOOM.*

The ten-mile warship shuddered as if struck by a falling planet. Along the underbelly of the hull, three hundred black-iron containment spheres ruptured simultaneously with deafening, resonant clangs. Millions of tons of super-compressed stellar plasma burst outward through the warship's seams like air escaping a popped balloon, venting into the vacuum in massive, swirling plumes of brilliant, blinding orange and blue gas.

The violent, asymmetric reaction thrust caught the ten-mile dreadnought and sent it spinning end-over-end through the vacuum like an oversized black baton, tumbling helplessly through the void at four hundred miles per hour.

The other nine Harvester dreadnoughts in the vanguard immediately threw their helm thrusters into emergency reverse, their captains staring in paralyzed terror as their flagship cartwheeled uncontrollably across the orbital sector, spewing fire and glowing debris.

Austin, still standing calmly on the orbital ring's catwalk fifty miles away, took a small yellow notepad from his pocket and clicked his pen.

"Look at that," Austin sighed, watching the spinning warship with an expert eye. "Unrestrained pneumatic venting causing uncontrolled rotational tumbling. No safety relief headers routed to a designated flare stack. That's at least three separate environmental discharge violations, plus reckless operation of a motor vehicle in an active crane corridor."

He keyed the communications link to the orbital foundries.

"Tie Kuang. Xuan Ming. Bring out the heavy tow cables and the four-inch magnetic snatch blocks. Catch that spinning black barge before it bumps into Spire Three's guy wire. Once you arrest its momentum, board the vessel, impound their ignition keys, and issue everyone on board a yellow hard hat and a three-quarter-inch drive socket set."

A moment later, Xuan Ming and a boarding party of sixty void inquisitors swept onto the crippled bridge of the *Vulture’s Talon*. The former Grand Inquisitor, wearing his pristine white supervisor hard hat with the yellow Monthly Safety Champion star, walked right up to the groveling, terrified Commander Xue Long and slapped a laminated yellow violation invoice onto the obsidian command dais.

"Commander Xue Long," Xuan Ming declared with booming, righteous satisfaction. "You are hereby cited by the Lord Architect's Department of Orbital Building Inspection for operating an uncertified vessel, tampering with municipal solar lines, and creating an uncontrolled rotational navigation hazard! You have thirty minutes to surrender your void-tokens and report to Station Four for mandatory safety orientation!"

Xue Long looked up from the deck, his four eyes dazed, trembling as he looked at the yellow paper. "Mandatory... safety orientation?"

"Yes," Xuan Ming said crisply, handing him a high-visibility orange vest and a three-quarter-inch socket wrench. "Now put on your vest. You are eighty thousand bolts behind schedule on the stator plates, and the Lord Architect does not tolerate slackers."
