Chapter 191: The Orbital Ring Railgun Battery

In the grand, poetic canon of mortal and immortal combat, warriors spent centuries meditating upon sword intent, refining nine-fold spiritual flames, and carving complex spatial arrays into white jade talismans.

Austin, having spent his formative years working on industrial logistics systems, automated warehousing, and municipal rail transit, preferred a simpler equation: kinetic energy equals one-half mass times velocity squared.

"If you have a twenty-two-thousand-mile circular magnetic levitation stator track," Austin explained over the internal dreadnought frequency, calmly tightening a heavy copper busway terminal lug with a 15/16-inch box wrench, "and you have one hundred exawatts of clean, three-phase alternating current feeding into liquid-helium-cooled superconducting linear induction coils, you don't merely have an ore transport railway. You have an oversized, thirty-thousand-kilometer mass driver barrel. Any circular track can become a linear gun if you just turn off the containment magnet at the right degree of arc."

Gathered around the primary switching substation on Dreadnought Foundry 01, Tie Kuang and Jiang Taixu listened with wide, horrified eyes.

"Austin," Tie Kuang stammered, pointing a thick, soot-stained thumb out the observation window toward the approaching Harvester armada. "The enemy fleet has formed a ten-thousand-mile line of battle! One hundred Class-X dreadnoughts are charging their spatial drills! The dark-matter void shields on *The Void Devourer* are glowing like black thunderclouds! What kind of spiritual treasure could possibly pierce a fifty-mile hull of solid void-iron?!"

"We're not using spiritual treasures," Austin said, tossing the wrench into his canvas tool tote with a dull *clink*. "Spiritual treasures are expensive, difficult to calibrate, and they void your equipment warranty. We're using surplus scrap metal. Tie Kuang, how many fifty-ton solid tungsten-carbide extrusion billets do we have sitting in the storage yard on Dreadnought Three?"

"We... we forged about four hundred of them yesterday when we cleared out the asteroid ore backlog," Tie Kuang replied, scratching his graying beard. "They were meant to be drawn into secondary structural reinforcement rebar for the southern elevator spires to meet your tensile deflection specs."

"Rebar can wait until tomorrow," Austin commanded. "Load six of them onto the heavy-duty high-speed mag-lev freight bogies. Install the graphite-sheathed sabot mounts and position them on Track Alpha at Station One."

Down on the heavy freight siding of Dreadnought 03, an automated gantry crane swung into action with high-pitched motor whines. Six colossal cylinders of solid, sintered tungsten-carbide—each eight feet in diameter, twenty feet long, and weighing exactly fifty tons of ultra-dense industrial alloy—were hoisted onto streamlined magnetic sleds resting upon the superconducting guide rails.

Jiang Taixu hovered nearby in his void-suit, watching the fifty-ton slugs with solemn reverence. The ancient grandmaster drew two fingers across the cold gray metal, chanting a quiet blessing: "May the spirits of the deep earth guide this blade of unyielding stone..."

"Taixu!" Austin’s voice barked through his helmet earpiece. "Step outside the yellow crane safety envelope! If a hoist cable snaps, fifty tons of tungsten will crush your spatial robes into a three-millimeter pancake before your golden core even notices the impact. And put your safety goggles over your visor; the arc flash from the stator coils will blind you in four milliseconds."

Jiang Taixu gasped, scurrying backward behind the yellow safety line like a scolded schoolboy. "Forgive me, Lord Architect! I was merely harmonizing the metal with the Dao of Flight!"

"The metal doesn't need to harmonize with the Dao," Austin retorted. "It needs twelve hundred kilo-amps of electromagnetic propulsion."

High in the central control room, Austin adjusted his Shade-14 welding visor and stepped up to the master rail transit console.

Before him lay a real-time holographic map of the Geosynchronous Ring. Running around the entire circumference of the planet was a continuous green band, representing the linear motor stator coils embedded in the track. Each coil was wound with four-ought oxygen-free copper and encased in liquid-helium cryostats maintaining a frigid four Kelvin.

"Track Alpha cleared of maintenance crews and squeegee drones," Austin announced into his microphone. "Phase-angle synchronization locked at three hundred sixty hertz. Engaging linear stator banks One through Four Thousand."

*CLACK-WHINE-ROOOAAAR.*

A sound that began as a low, sub-audible electrical hum rapidly ascended into a deafening, shrieking electromagnetic roar that shook the very foundation trusses of the orbital ring.

At Station One, the first fifty-ton tungsten slug lurched forward.

Within three miles, the sequential magnetic pulses had accelerated the fifty-ton block of metal to Mach one. Within thirty miles, it passed Mach five. By the time it completed a quarter-turn around the planet—whipping past the six-thousand-mile mark over the Eastern Ocean—it was traveling at Mach twenty-five, glowing cherry-red through its graphite sabot sheath as the linear coils pumped tens of millions of amperes into the drive line.

By the time it completed two full circuits around the globe, the projectile had achieved its design exit velocity: Mach fifty. Seventeen point one five kilometers per second.

Austin watched the digital readout count down the final arc-second of the launch tangent.

"Releasing magnetic switch-gate at Sector Four in three... two... one... RELEASE."

*BANG.*

The heavy magnetic containment gate at Sector Four switched polarity in four microseconds.

The fifty-ton tungsten slug did not fire like a cannon; it simply slipped out of the ring's circular orbit along a straight, tangential vector, shooting out into the deep void like a blazing meteor of solid, white-hot metal.

Two seconds later, the second fifty-ton slug was released.

Then the third. The fourth. The fifth. The sixth.

Six fifty-ton rods of solid tungsten-carbide, trailing long plumes of ionized vacuum plasma, tore across the forty-thousand-kilometer gap toward the advancing Harvester fleet at thirty-eight thousand miles per hour.

Aboard Dreadnought Foundry 04, Commander Xue Long and his two hundred former Harvester officers stood on the catwalk, watching the blazing white fireballs streak outward into the deep void.

Xue Long’s four eyes dilated until they filled his entire face.

"By the Ancestors of the Void..." Xue Long whispered, his voice trembling in religious terror. "The Serpent of Iron... it does not merely encircle their world. It spits the bones of the earth at forty thousand miles per hour. We were fools... arrogant, blind fools to think they were primitives."

Aboard the bridge of the lead Harvester dreadnought *Black Scorpion*, Commander Wu Zhen was sneering at his tactical scrying pool.

"The mortal ring flickers with light!" Wu Zhen laughed contemptuously. "Have the primitives decided to throw a festival in honor of their impending demise? Let our Void-Drills tear their—"

The sensor elder shrieked, clutching his face as the scrying pool boiled with white light. "Commander! High-velocity physical projectiles detected on direct intercept trajectory! Velocity: Mach fifty! Mass: fifty tons each! Time to impact: zero point two seconds!"

"Fifty tons of mortal metal?!" Wu Zhen spat with supreme arrogance. "Our Abyssal Void-Shields can withstand the breath of a nine-tailed celestial fox! Activate the Nine-Layer Spatial Ward! Let their pitiful stones shatter upon our glory!"

The black dreadnought’s shields flared with dark crimson runes, generating a barrier of warped spacetime three miles thick.

An instant later, the first fifty-ton tungsten slug struck the shield.

At seventeen kilometers per second, the kinetic energy of fifty tons of solid metal does not behave like a bullet. It behaves like an astronomical impact event.

*KRAAA-BOOOOM.*

The nine-layer spatial ward did not shatter; the sheer, monstrous kinetic momentum of the projectile overwhelmed the spatial geometry of the shield entirely. The kinetic energy converted into a nuclear-scale explosion of compressed plasma. The spatial ward collapsed inward, and the tungsten slug—now a flattened, white-hot penetrator dart—punched straight through the five-mile-long black-iron warship from bow to stern.

It entered through the primary void-drill assembly, obliterated the forward ammunition bays, sliced through twelve decks of barracks, tore the central dark-matter propulsion reactor off its magnetic gimbals, and exited through the stern thrusters, leaving a sixty-foot-wide tunnel of vaporized metal and boiling white plasma.

The *Black Scorpion* didn't even have time to explode. The sheer kinetic shock ripped the five-mile hull in half along its longitudinal keel, the two halves spinning away into the void like snapped matchsticks.

*CRACK! BOOM! CRACK!*

The remaining five tungsten slugs struck the Harvester battle line in rapid succession.

Three more five-mile dreadnoughts were violently disemboweled, their dark-matter containment systems violently rupturing in blinding flashes of blue antimatter annihilation. A fourth warship had its primary bridge module completely sheared off by a grazing impact, sending the command citadel tumbling into the outer solar system.

In less than four seconds, four of the Harvester Citadel’s proudest warships had been reduced to expanding clouds of twisted scrap metal and glowing debris, while the remaining ninety-six ships violently broke formation in sheer, unadulterated panic.

Aboard the flagship *The Void Devourer*, Sovereign Chen Tian stumbled backward across his dais, his four eyes wide with horrified, disbelieving shock.

"What... what kind of celestial talisman was that?!" Chen Tian roared, his voice cracking with hysteria. "Was it the Divine Piercing Needle of the Northern Star Sovereign?! Was it an ancient God-Killing Spear?!"

Elder Mo Fan, his hands trembling violently as he examined the debris sensor readouts, turned to his master with a face as pale as a corpse.

"Sovereign..." Mo Fan whimpered. "The... the scrying analysis is complete. That was no god-killing spear! Nor was it an ancient talisman! It was... it was an unrefined billet of structural industrial tungsten! They... they accelerated a piece of rebar using a magnetic railway!"

"A piece of rebar?!" Chen Tian screamed, his mind refusing to comprehend the sheer, humiliating vulgarity of the attack. "They dare strike my fleet with construction materials?!"

Forty thousand kilometers away, on the central transit platform of the Geosynchronous Ring, Austin lowered his binoculars and nodded with mild approval.

"Good grouping," Austin said, making a small notation on his clipboard. "Flight path deviation under zero point zero zero four percent. The magnetic switch-gates handled the load without arcing."

He turned toward Tie Kuang.

"Tie Kuang, how many more tungsten billets do we have in the yard?"

Tie Kuang, whose jaw had been resting on his chest for the past thirty seconds, blinked dazedly. "Three... three hundred and ninety-four, Austin."

"Good," Austin said, pulling his thermos of black coffee from his pouch. "Keep Track Alpha clear. If they try to advance another five thousand miles, we’ll run a continuous twelve-round salvo every forty seconds. I want to see if we can get the exit velocity up to Mach sixty without throwing a circuit breaker."
