On the airless, gray regolith surface of the dwarf planet Ceres, a circumferential track of solid, polished star-jade stretched five hundred miles around the equator like a glowing cyan belt.
The track had originally been installed as a heavy industrial magnetic induction rail for shunting two-hundred-thousand-ton cargo containers between smelting foundries. But with twelve million farads of star-jade capacitance charged to one hundred percent by Austin’s Penrose power takeoff, the magnetic acceleration coils along the five-hundred-mile circuit were humming with two point five zettawatts of restless, crackling potential.
Inside the automated control bunker carved three miles deep into Ceres’s basalt mantle, Tie Kuang stood before a massive industrial console, his heavy hand resting on the primary knife-switch of the main busbar.
Beside him sat Pug, perched upon a swivel stool covered in a thick wool blanket.
Pug was wearing a custom-fitted miniature fiberglass hard hat, a fluorescent orange vest with reflective silver piping, and a pair of tinted safety goggles strapped securely around his velvety ears. On the console in front of his paws sat a six-inch-wide, bright red rubber industrial palm-button labeled in bold yellow grease pencil: **HIGH-SPEED AGGREGATE DISPENSING UNIT**.
Behind them, Chonker’s massive four-legged mining tractor chassis rumbled as his hydraulic claw swung a five-hundred-ton, octagonal block of sintered tungsten-carbide quarry slag onto the electromagnetic loading cradle.
*"BARK!"* Pug yipped sharply, his stubby tail wagging like a metronome.
"Hold your horses, Captain," Tie Kuang chuckled, adjusting his heavy welding helmet. "We have to verify the track vacuum clearance first. Austin’s orders. We do not fire a single slug until the magnetic levitation rails reach superconducting equilibrium at four Kelvin."
Over the radio, Austin’s dry voice crackled through the bunker speakers from fifty thousand miles away in the dark void:
*"Tie Kuang, how’s the quarry tailings disposal system looking?"*
"System is fully primed, Boss," Tie Kuang replied into his headset. "Chonker has staged fifty blocks of five-hundred-ton tungsten aggregate on the staging ramp. Capacitors are locked at twenty-two thousand kilovolts. But, uh... Boss? The Concordat fleet is currently deploying two hundred fast-attack strike cruisers in a wedge formation. They appear to be charging spatial void-lances to bombard Ceres."
*"That’s fine,"* Austin said calmly. *"Under Municipal Ordinance Forty-Two, Section Eight, excess excavation spoils from deep-core mining operations must be transferred to designated long-term tailings deposits in a timely manner. We’ve got fifty thousand tons of scrap tungsten sitting on the loading dock taking up valuable laydown space. Launch the aggregate into the designated disposal corridor."*
"Understood, Boss," Tie Kuang grinned, his copper-scaled face splitting into a broad, fanged smirk. "Disposing of excess quarry tailings at high velocity."
He turned to the pug.
"All right, Captain Pug. Clear to dispense aggregate."
*"WOOF!"*
Pug slammed both front paws down on the giant red rubber palm-button with unbridled canine enthusiasm.
*CLACK.*
Deep beneath the surface of Ceres, the main magnetic contactors slammed shut with a concussive thump that shook the entire subterranean bunker.
Two point five zettawatts of stored electrical energy dumped into the five-hundred-mile circumferential star-jade track in a single, roaring millisecond.
The five-hundred-ton block of dense tungsten-carbide was seized by alternating linear induction coils spaced at five-foot intervals along the equator. The block did not slowly accelerate; it exploded into motion.
Riding on a frictionless cushion of superconducting magnetic levitation, the massive metal slug covered fifty miles in its first two seconds, two hundred miles in four seconds, and completed three full laps around Ceres’s equator before the magnetic ejection switch opened at the northern equatorial launch ramp.
*THOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!*
The five-hundred-ton tungsten slug left the surface of Ceres at Mach 100—nearly thirty-four miles per second!
Because the mass of Ceres was nine point three nine times ten to the twentieth kilograms, the immense kinetic recoil of the launch was absorbed into the planet’s dense iron-silicate core with virtually zero orbital deflection. The dwarf planet didn't wobble by so much as a single nanometer.
Instead, a blinding beam of cyan electromagnetic fire erupted from the northern horizon of Ceres, followed instantly by a second, a third, and a fourth!
Pug sat on his stool, rhythmically hammering the red palm-button with both paws: *SLAP-SLAP-SLAP-SLAP!*
*"BARK! BARK! BARK! BARK!"*
Every two point five seconds, Chonker’s automated hydraulic loading arm slammed another five-hundred-ton tungsten boulder into the breech. Every two point five seconds, the circumferential star-jade rail screamed with white-hot magnetic induction fury.
A continuous stream of twenty massive tungsten slugs tore through the black void between Ceres and Jupiter, traveling in a tight, hyper-velocity kinetic spear.
A translucent amber notification flashed across Austin’s HUD as he watched the salvo streak overhead:
Thirty thousand miles away, the two hundred fast-attack strike cruisers of the Void Concordat were advancing in proud, arrowhead formation.
Their hulls were carved from iridescent abyssal silver, shielded by layered void-deflection barriers that could turn aside the spiritual sword qi of high-tier Dao Ancestors. Their commanders, proud Astral Lords from the inner sanctums of the Seven-Star Palace, sneered at the distant dwarf planet through their crystal periscopes.
"Prepare the Void-Cleaving Torrents!" Commander Yan roared, drawing his shimmering gold broadsword. "Level that lifeless rock to ash!"
Before the words had completely left his throat, the first tungsten slug arrived.
At Mach 100, there was no sound, no warning, and no time for human or immortal reflexes to react. The slug did not possess spiritual intent. It had no karmic signature. It was simply five hundred tons of dense, cold, industrial metal carrying nearly three hundred megatons of raw Newtonian kinetic energy.
The first slug struck the lead strike cruiser dead-center in the prow.
The ship’s multi-layered void-deflection barrier flashed brilliant azure, held for approximately four microseconds, and then shattered like a pane of sugar glass under a sledgehammer.
The tungsten slug punched clean through the ship’s three-foot-thick abyssal silver bow armor, blasted through the forward command deck, plowed through seventy bulkheads of hardened void-iron, pulverized the central spirit-reactor chamber, and exited through the stern propulsion nozzles without slowing down by more than two percent.
The kinetic shockwave alone caused the entire one-hundred-mile cruiser to implode inward like a crushed beer can, before the displaced internal atmosphere ignited into a blinding fireball that consumed the wreckage.
*CRACK-BOOM!*
Before the fireball could even expand, the second slug arrived.
And the third. And the fourth.
And then, just before the remaining slugs crossed the center of the Concordat formation, the proximity timers Austin had spot-welded onto their noses detonated.
*SHATTER!*
Each five-hundred-ton block of tungsten-carbide fragmented into ten million jagged, fist-sized shrapnel pellets traveling at Mach 100.
The space between Jupiter and Ceres became a deadly wall of blinding-fast flak!
Millions of dense, high-speed tungsten pellets ripped through the Concordat strike cruisers with brutal efficiency. Sensor masts sheared off. Hangar bays turned into colanders. Antimatter coolant lines ruptured in hundreds of places at once. The sheer abrasive force of five hundred thousand tons of flying quarry gravel ground the sacred hull runes into glittering dust!
Within forty-five seconds, all two hundred strike cruisers went dead.
Eighty suffered total structural collapse, tumbling through the void in burning pieces. The remaining hundred and twenty drifted with dead engines. Millions of glowing puncture holes vented frozen air and glittering spirit dust into the black vacuum.
Aboard the flagship *Hammer of the Empyrean*, the bridge fell into pure pandemonium.
Arch-Dominus Wu Ji clung to the edge of the cracked scrying basin. His golden hair was wildly disheveled, and his eyes bulged in gibbering panic.
"They... they turned an entire world into a giant slingshot!" Wu Ji wailed, clutching his temples. "They didn't even use divine spells! They threw mountains at us! Five-hundred-ton iron boulders launched from the belt of a dwarf planet! What kind of Dao is this?! How can regular stone hit with the wrath of a falling star?!"
"Arch-Dominus!" the Chief Surveyor screamed, coughing up blood as another scrying crystal shattered. "The dwarf planet is reloading! The giant beast and the three-headed dog are loading more iron chunks onto the golden ring! Another forty slugs are primed!"
"Retreat!" an Astral Inquisitor screamed, abandoning his post and lunging for the escape pods. "Order the fleet to jump to hyperspace! We cannot fight a world that fires its own marrow!"
"SILENCE!" Wu Ji roared, though his own knees were knocking together beneath his robes. "The hyperspace jump engines require fifteen minutes to charge in this spatial interference! Raise all remaining capital shields! Bring the flagship’s sixteen spinal siege cannons to bear on that mortal laborer! If we destroy him, their bizarre sorcery will collapse!"
Out in the void, Austin stood atop the debris of the vanguard, watching the cloud of disabled cruisers drift harmlessly away from the transport lane.
He nodded once.
"Good pattern density," Austin said into his comms. "Pug, ease off the red button for a minute. Let the barrel cool down. We don't want to warp the star-jade guide rails on the north ramp."
*"Woof!"* Pug’s satisfied bark came back over the radio, followed by the wet sound of him licking a spoonful of peanut butter from Tie Kuang’s fingers.
Austin turned his gaze toward the flagship *Hammer of the Empyrean*, which was now drifting alone at the center of the broken fleet, its sixteen massive siege lances glowing with desperate, flickering violet light.
He reached down to his hip, tapped the handle of his five-foot pipe wrench, and adjusted his hard hat.
"Tie Kuang," Austin said.
*"Yeah, Boss?"*
"Keep the flak battery on standby. I’m going over there to inspect their engine room. From the looks of that exhaust plume, they’re venting unburned antimatter straight into the vacuum. That violates the Clean Void Air Act of Year Five."
Austin ignited his boot thrusters with a short, controlled burst of compressed gas, coasting across the remaining twenty miles of empty space directly toward the flagship’s main bridge tower.
