The twenty-meter bone-sheathed tail of the Hard-shelled Bone-Scorpion Empress hung poised at the zenith of its strike arc. It trembled with lethal high-pressure tension. At its tip, the two-meter alabaster stinger gleamed with blinding clarity under the flickering trench floodlights. Droplets of packed neurotoxin sizzled. They fell through thirty feet of empty air, punching smoking, dime-sized boreholes into the solid dark rock below.
Along the quarry floor, the air smelled of ozone, melting quartz, and hot blood.
Grimm remained locked in place.
The Obsidian Bone-Fang Hound’s jaws didn’t yield by a tiny fraction of an inch. Violet beast-blood from the cut pedipalp tendon bubbled between his clenched fangs, matting his charcoal fur and staining his whiskers. His gravity marrow anchored his four limbs into the rock. He held the titan’s five-meter left pincer flat against the earth. He felt the terrifying sky shifted weight gathering directly above his skull. He smelled the acidic reek of the impending venom strike. Yet his amber eyes stayed fixed upon Arthur Vance standing on the distant firestep.
In a battle against an eighteen-meter Disaster, survival was not born of single heroism. It was forged in total, unhesitating squad synchrony. Grimm understood his assignment. He was the anchor. If the anchor shifted, the entire tactical structure collapsed into ruin.
