Chaska built the pulley before anybody knew whether they would use it.
It hung between two beams borrowed from the kitchen’s outer awning, supported on the house platform’s existing braces. Ashaun inspected the joints. She could not haul both ends of a rope, but she could tell where a knot would slide and where the shellhorn’s weight would load the frame if she turned.
Chaska changed the lower fastening without arguing.
The sling was for support. Ysabet repeated that until she annoyed everybody, then repeated it once more. They would not drag the calf out against the mother’s body. They would keep its weight from undoing the small progress made during the pauses.
Moss-on-Stone accepted the canvas under her belly after Pela held a corner to her nose. She objected to the first rope passing behind her hind leg and kicked it away. They rerouted it. The process took an hour.
Jhevi’s sister came to complain about the kitchen beams. She saw the laboring animal and went back for blankets instead.
Around midnight the calf shifted.
Ysabet felt the change before she understood it. The folded limb moved forward. The shoulder which had blocked the passage turned enough to stop filling her whole reach.
