Twelve hours remained on the countdown clock.

Over Sunset Peak, the five-thousand-mile vortex of purple tribulation clouds had settled into a thick, suffocating ceiling of black ozone. Midday felt like an eclipse. The barometric pressure dropped so low it felt like someone was standing on your chest, while a steady sixty-cycle vibrational hum droned through the rock, rattling human ribs like cheap tin.

Static electricity dripped from every rough edge on the mountain.

Down along the stepped terraces of Mount Clear Sky, young sword disciple Li Xiaoyao shivered as every hair on his arms stood on end. When his knuckle brushed a wooden guardrail post, a bright blue spark jumped with an audible *CRACK*. He half-drew his practice sword, then jammed it back into the scabbard with a sharp yelp—the steel was humming like an angry hornet, spitting blue corona discharge from the pommel to the crossguard. Every breath tasted like crushed copper pennies.

Nearby, two of his fellow disciples tried to lean on their stamped-steel spades, only for bright violet sparks to arc across the rivets on their orange safety vests.

"The Heavenly Dao marks our flesh!" one of them wailed, dropping to his knees. "The celestial fire seeks the marrow of our bones!"

Down in the mud, fifty thousand cultivators huddled together under soaked tarps and canvas, knees knocking against the wet gravel. Clan patriarchs and ancient elders who had ruled mountain provinces sat cross-legged in the red muck, clutching jade talismans to their ribs. A few wrapped themselves in soaked wool blankets, trying to insulate their meridians against the heavens, while younger disciples chanted funeral sutras as the clouds groaned like tearing boiler plate:

*KRRRRRR-BOOM!*

The sky shuddered. Violet lightning flashed against the granite ravines like a strobe light in an abattoir.

Up on the summit, nobody was chanting sutras. They had too much structural iron to set before the blow-off.

*CLANG-RUMBLE-CLANG!*

The counterweights of the twenty-ton freight hoist rattled inside their vertical guide channels as the lift platform rose from Floor 2. The safety gates kicked open with a loud hydraulic snort, revealing twelve massive metal cylinders resting in notched timber transport cradles:

*PSSSSSSSH-CLANK.*

Each rod ran a hundred feet long and four inches thick, poured from solid Cold-Iron copper alloy in the induction blast furnaces below. The round stock had been turned on heavy lathes and buffed to a mirror shine, tapering at the tip into a hardened conical strike point designed to concentrate electrical field density and pull in high-voltage discharge.

Austin stood in the center of the Obsidian Plaza, his Sovereign Hard Hat locked tight. An exothermic welding face-shield was flipped up on his forehead, his heavy cowhide gloves dusted with gray graphite powder. His five-foot Stellar-Steel pipe wrench hung across his back harness. At his boots sat a two-piece graphite **Cadweld Mold**, a tin of steel retaining discs, and twelve sealed canisters of copper-thermite reaction powder.

"Jiang Taixu!" Austin barked, cutting through the high-pitched static whistle. "Take Rods One through Eight! Mount them to the apex structural trusses of the cooling towers! Grade-eight stainless U-bolts, double-nutted, split-washered, torqued to a hundred and fifty foot-pounds! No loose hardware up there, and don't eyeball it—wait for the ratchet to click!"

"Understood, Master Austin!" Jiang Taixu yelled back, biting his blue carpenter pencil between his molars.

The Southern Sword Saint gathered an eight-hundred-pound copper spire under one arm, channeled the Nine Heavens Wind-Stepping Art, and launched himself upward.

*SWOOSH!*

Jiang bounded straight up the cross-braced diagonal struts of Tower 1 in two seconds flat. He hauled the copper rod flush against the apex truss plate. Before spinning a single nut, Jiang squinted through his safety glasses, tracing a thin hairline of soul sword intent along the length of the cylinder to verify the vertical plumb line against the earth's gravity down to a hair's breadth.

"Plumb line true!" Jiang yelled down against the howling draft.

He reached for his pneumatic torque wrench, tightening the stainless nuts with rhythmic, concussive pulses until the internal clutch snapped:

*CREAK-CLANG! CLICK!*

One after another, the eight titanium radiator towers were crowned with hundred-foot copper spires. They jutted twenty feet past the induced-draft fan cowlings, sharp tips aimed straight at the belly of the purple storm like heavy lances ready for a joust.

The last four spires went up fast: two lag-bolted into the heavy structural ridge beams of the timber lodge, and two anchored atop the structural steel masts flanking the capacitor yard.

Next came the main conductor run.

"Tie Kuang! Grab the come-along winch and muscle this master spool!" Austin called out, kicking a pine chock from under the reel.

Across the obsidian tiles, Austin and Tie Kuang wrestled a three-thousand-foot roll of **500-MCM Heavy Braided Bare Copper Grounding Cable**. The conductor was thick as a man's wrist, braided from hundreds of heavy copper strands built to swallow massive surge currents without inductive choke or thermal blowout.

Austin ran the heavy conductor along the perimeter of the plaza, laying it into the newly dug, gravel-bedded trenches. At the base of Tower 1, he clamped the bare braid against the heavy titanium foot-plate and locked the split graphite Cadweld mold over the junction.

"Master Austin," Tie Kuang asked, leaning close as his yellow helmet knocked against Austin's shoulder. "Why bother with this clay box? Why not just clamp the cable down with a couple of heavy brass screw lugs? It would save twenty minutes."

"Mechanical lugs are for hacks, Tie Kuang," Austin said, shaking his head. "A mechanical crimp leaves microscopic voids between the copper strands. In damp mountain air, galvanic corrosion chews it up in six months. When two hundred thousand amps hits a corroded mechanical lug, the contact resistance causes an arc flash that blows the lug apart like a pipe bomb. An exothermic Cadweld uses molten copper to fuse the whole joint into a single continuous molecular structure. Zero voids. Zero resistance. Permanent."

Austin dropped a thin steel disc into the bottom of the graphite crucible, emptied a canister of copper oxide and aluminum thermite over it, and dusted the lip with fine starter powder:

*Click.*

Austin pulled down his shaded face-shield and struck his flint striker.

*FZZZZZZZZT-FLASH!*

A four-thousand-degree exothermic fireball popped inside the graphite mold!

The thermite reaction flashed the copper oxide into a boiling pool of pure molten copper, melting the 500-MCM cable strands and the structural base plate into one solid metallurgical weld. Acrid smoke puffed from the mold vents, smelling of superheated copper and roasted flux.

Austin counted ten seconds, popped the mold clamps, and tapped the slag with the steel heel of his boot:

*Tink.*

The brittle gray crust dropped away, exposing a clean, golden-pink monolithic weld.

"Zero galvanic resistance," Austin grunted with deep professional satisfaction. "Clean bond. No mechanical threads to back out under heat cycling. That’s how you build an equipotential ground loop."

Tie Kuang came trotting across the tiles, hauling the tail of the master copper busbar over his shoulder like a plow mule. He skidded to a halt by the trench, shouting over the roar of the clouds:

"Master Austin! The master busbar is tied into all twelve spires and the perimeter ring! Where do we drive the earth rod?! Should we hammer it down into the deep subterranean rock of Floor 4 and vent the heavenly wrath into the void?!"

"Drive it into the dirt?!" Austin stared at him like he'd proposed lighting blueprints on fire for warmth. "Dump five hundred million volts of high-density direct current straight into the ground like a pack of savages?! Do you have any idea what the local power rates are?!"

Tie Kuang blinked, soot-streaked mouth falling slack:

"Master Austin... you... you aren't grounding the heavenly wrath into the bedrock?!"

"Why on earth would I toss away five hundred megavolts of clean, harvestable atmospheric power?!" Austin pointed his grease pencil toward the heavy chain-link cage on the western rim of the plaza.

Inside the enclosure stood Sunset Peak’s **2.5-Gigawatt-Hour Solar-Crystal Capacitor Grid**—forty massive steel-cased cabinets lined up in neat ranks, humming with quiet standby charge behind heavy porcelain standoff bushings.

"Run that master busbar straight through our high-voltage vacuum breakers and bolt it right to the primary charging bars of the capacitor grid," Austin ordered. "A single direct strike from a storm this size packs roughly a billion joules. Three or four good hits from this tribulation front, and that capacitor bank is charged to one hundred percent capacity. It'll run the ore sorters, the induction blast furnaces, and my radiant porch heat for the next six months without costing me a single copper!"

Tie Kuang stood paralyzed.

Up on Tower 8, Jiang Taixu nearly dropped his ratchet off the catwalk.

Both men stared at Austin in stunned, dazed comprehension.

The Heavenly Dao had dragged up a five-thousand-mile extinction calamity to obliterate the mountain...

And the General Contractor wasn't putting up defensive barrier arrays...

He had rigged an industrial copper lightning trap to hijack the wrath of the thunder gods and charge his batteries for free winter heating!

Tie Kuang’s gear-shaped Golden Core whirred with ecstatic, worshipful fervor:

"The Dao of Energy Harvesting! The sacred art of celestial utility piracy! Wiring the Heavens straight to the battery bank right now!"

*CLACK-SNAP!*

Tie Kuang shoved the master busbar into the main distribution terminal of the capacitor yard, torquing the three-quarter-inch hex bolt with a loud, ringing heave!

Austin stepped onto the lodge porch, pulled his digital earth-ground resistance tester from his belt, and stabbed the test leads into the monitoring terminal.

His HUD flared with bright, emerald-green verification text:

"Point one one eight ohms," Austin murmured, letting out a long, slow breath. "Electrical code accepts anything under five. Under point two is pristine. Let the front blow its stack."

He wiped the graphite dust from his cheek with a shop rag, checking his system timer.

The countdown had slipped into its final thirty seconds:

`[CORE IGNITION COUNTDOWN: 00:00:29...]`

`[CORE IGNITION COUNTDOWN: 00:00:28...]`

Around Austin’s shins, his one hundred and ninety-six orbital micro-particles began to scream.

*VZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!*

Obsidian fragments, copper pellets, and star-titanium filings spun at blinding, dizzying speeds, throwing off a high-pitched gyroscopic whine that made the cedar floorboards hum beneath his boots.

Deep in his dantian, the two-million-degree stellar crucible reached its critical limit. Outward radiation pressure couldn't hold off inward gravitational collapse any longer. The super-dense hydrogen shell caved toward the core of his soul.

Austin closed his eyes, set his steel-toed boots wide against the cedar deck, and took a slow, steady breath:

"Ten seconds," Austin whispered.

`3... 2... 1...`
