Chapter 112: Topping Off the Capacitor Grid

The air inside Sunset Peak’s surface substation yard shrieked with unadulterated electromagnetic violence.

Two hundred and forty-two thousand amperes of pure, five-hundred-and-eighty-million-volt celestial lightning rammed the input terminals of the high-voltage surge-arrester bank:

*KRRRRRR-CLACK!*

The four-foot-tall ceramic arresters—stuffed with stacked discs of sintered zinc oxide varistors—flared into blinding, violet-white light. Clobbered by the astronomical transient surge, the varistor blocks shifted from near-infinite insulation resistance to near-zero resistance within two nanoseconds flat. They clamped that monstrous five-hundred-and-eighty-million-volt heaven-sent spike down to a clean, manageable twelve thousand four hundred volts DC, shunting the raw river of charge straight into the primary copper busbars of the **2.5-Gigawatt-Hour Solar-Crystal Capacitor Grid**!

Inside the chain-link enclosure, forty colossal steel battery cabinets—anchored to six-inch vibration-isolated concrete pads with heavy wedge anchors—groaned under the sudden magnetic torque.

Thousands of high-density dielectric crystal plates, cut from compressed First Epoch void-quartz and interleaved with micro-thin sheets of gold foil, absorbed the incoming deluge of charge carriers.

A high-pitched, magnetic resonance hum rolled across the obsidian terrace, vibrating the steel buckles on every cultivator’s work boots:

*HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!*

On the exterior face of the central supervisory control cabinet, green digital LED segments cascaded upward with blistering, dizzying speed:

`[Grid State of Charge]: 14.2%...` `[Grid State of Charge]: 38.5%...` `[Grid State of Charge]: 64.1%...` `[Grid State of Charge]: 88.9%...` `[Grid State of Charge]: 99.9%...`

*DING-DONG-CHIME!*

A crisp, two-tone electronic chime—the exact cheerful tone of an industrial freight elevator arriving at the third-floor shipping dock—echoed across the stunned mountain peak:

High in the thinning stratosphere, the ninety-mile Nine-Headed Ancient Violet Lightning Dragon gave up its final, pathetic acoustic gasp:

*Wuuuuuuuurrrrrr-pop!*

The sound carried all the tragic dignity of a cheap party balloon wheezing out its last breath behind a radiator.

Its spatial-cleaving horns, its continent-shattering claws, its iridescent scales of condensed void-fire—every shred of atmospheric static that formed the celestial executioner vanished down the one-hundred-foot copper air terminal like a stray noodle slurped up by a famished apprentice:

*SCHLLLLUUUURP.*

At the copper terminal lug, the last stray purple spark snapped: *Pip.*

Dead quiet.

The ninety-mile executioner of ancient immortal sects had been processed, sorted by valence state, and filed into forty gray metal cabinets behind a padlock.

Deprived of charge, the five-thousand-mile vortex of purple tribulation clouds ran bone-dry.

Basic electrostatic equilibrium took its toll. A lightning storm demands a massive potential differential between cloud decks and the dirt. The moment Austin’s cold-iron air terminal and three-thousand-foot grounding loop siphoned two point one million kilowatt-hours from the troposphere in under two seconds, the entire atmospheric engine stalled out.

The ceiling of swirling black and purple thunderheads collapsed inward.

Within six seconds, the storm wall shredded into lazy, harmless wisps of white cotton vapor, drifting south across the crags on a mild mountain draft.

The bruised, bleeding violet gloom vanished.

In its stead stretched an immaculate dome of brilliant azure blue.

And dead-center in the sky, completely unbothered, hung the three-hundred-foot Second Sun, bathing Mount Clear Sky in clean, radiant midday warmth that brought the sweet fragrance of wild clover out of the soil.

A ringing, stunned silence settled over the mountain, interrupted only by the steady *whir-click* of cabinet exhaust fans and the rustle of wind under the eaves of the Timber Lodge.

Down on the lower terrace trenches, fifty thousand cultivators peeled their faces out of the gravel.

They blinked through their wrap-around emerald Shade-5 safety glasses.

They craned their necks skyward. Gone was the dragon. Gone were the jagged spears of void lightning. Nothing remained overhead except bright sunshine and a couple of fluffy, harmless clouds resembling fat sheep on a pasture hill.

Then their gazes drifted toward the fenced gravel yard on the Obsidian Plaza.

Forty battleship-gray steel enclosures stood humming behind five-foot galvanized chain link, neatly topped with three strands of outward-canted barbed wire.

Grand Elder Xuan Xiao’s jaw dropped so low his silver goatee scraped the crushed basalt. His safety glasses slid down the bridge of his nose, exposing pupils wide as teacup saucers:

"The... the Ninth-Stage Extinction Tribulation..." Xuan Xiao croaked, his voice cracking like brittle cedar shakes. "The supreme executioner of the Heavenly Dao... thirty leagues of dragon fire that wiped the Ancient Azure Cloud Sect off the face of the earth..."

His palsied, quivering finger pointed straight at the padlock on the substation gate:

"Sucked down an iron needle... and locked inside forty gray metal toolboxes?!"

Beside him, Patriarch Iron Blood of the Iron Bone Sect knelt in the dirt, weeping fat tears into his beard. The seven-foot, scarred brute clutched his round-point trenching shovel to his breast like a newborn babe:

"The cosmos poured down its absolute fury to erase this peak... and the Master Contractor trapped the wrath of the heavens just to top off his storage batteries... What kind of ancient foreman did we swear fealty to?! Who in their right mind uses the apocalypse as a free electrical refill?!"

Up on the plaza, Austin stepped off the cedar porch in his steel-toed work boots:

*Clomp. Clomp.*

The four hundred pounds of lead ballast in his cargo dungarees and saddle-leather toolbelt gave every stride the deliberate, crushing cadence of a steamroller.

He strolled past the gravel apron, unclipped his wooden clipboard, and marched up to the main supervisory cabinet.

Through his Shade-14 arc-welding goggles, Austin studied the dial indicators. He raised his yellow grease pencil and rapped the brass housing of the primary analog voltmeter:

*Tink, tink.*

"Twelve thousand four hundred volts DC," Austin grunted, noting the steady needle. "Zero ripple. Core cell temperature holding flat at thirty-eight point two Celsius. Liquid cooling circulation loops flowing smooth as clean oil."

He whipped out his six-inch stainless pocket scale, checking the thermal expansion joints along the heavy copper busbars. Every joint sat flush, tight, and true to spec.

He clicked the wax pencil against the clipboard clip with a sharp, professional *snap*, laying down a crisp checkmark on his three-part maintenance voucher:

"Two point one four five gigawatt-hours bagged in one point eight four seconds. Average inflow rate tapped one point one six gigawatts during peak surge. The zinc oxide varistor blocks took the wave without even a micro-fissure in the glaze."

Austin tipped his head back toward the cloudless azure sky, offering a faint nod of contractor appreciation:

"Have to hand it to this world's climate engine. Plenty of bugs in the rendering pipeline and the gamma balance is completely out of whack, but the local storm fronts carry serious energy density. Back home, your average lightning strike nets you fifty lousy kilowatt-hours, and ninety percent of that burns off as heat and thunder. But these immortal tribulation squalls? Pure, clean, high-grade DC juice. No carbon emissions, no ash disposal, zero coal burn."

He clicked his tongue in approval:

"Peak municipal efficiency. A free two-gigawatt-hour bank right before the winter freeze."

Austin turned on his heel and caught sight of Tie Kuang standing thirty feet away, jaw slack, his two-way radio dangling by its lanyard from his thick wrist.

"Tie Kuang!" Austin barked.

The dwarf shot six inches straight up, his yellow hard hat bouncing on his skull:

"Y-Yes, Master Austin! Present and accounted for, Master Austin! Please don’t route my Golden Core into the battery bank!"

Austin rolled his eyes behind the dark welding glass:

"Quit whining. Your core runs on mechanical gear ratios, not direct current. It wouldn’t even link to the busbar without a three-phase rotary phase converter. Now grab that radio and hail the Floor 2 foundry."

"C-Hail the foundry?!" Tie Kuang stammered, fumbling the handset with trembling, grease-stained fingers. "What am I telling the smiths?!"

"Tell them the surface capacitor bank is sitting pretty at one hundred percent capacity," Austin instructed, gesturing toward the humming gray cabinets. "Tell the furnace foremen to throw the main transfer switches. Take the four heavy-duty induction blast furnaces and the fifty-ton hydraulic forging press off the spirit stone generators and drop them straight onto the surface battery bus."

A tight, satisfied grin cut across Austin’s weathered face:

"We’ve got two point five gigawatt-hours sitting in those cells. That’s free juice for the next six months. Fire up the continuous rolling mills. I want Tier 4 Stellar-Steel I-beams coming off the line before sundown!"

Tie Kuang stared at Austin for three long heartbeats.

Then the arithmetic clicked in the dwarf’s skull. His internal gear-core spun up with a wild, manic whine:

"Free... free power?! The wrath of the gods... running our structural steel mills?!"

Tie Kuang smashed his thumb down on the radio’s push-to-talk button, shrieking into the mic with enough volume to rattle the speaker cone:

"Floor Two foundry! This is Foreman Tie Kuang! Throw the transfer breakers! Disconnect the spirit stone banks! Hook the induction furnaces straight to the **Heavenly Thunder Battery**! The Master just hijacked the heavens to run our rolling lines! Pour the steel! Pour the steel!"

From deep down the mountain’s central ventilation shafts came an answering subterranean rumble.

The massive high-voltage contactors on Floor 2 slammed home with a chorus of concussive, echoing clanks.

Four subterranean induction furnaces drank deep from the captured dragon, their water-cooled copper coils roaring with electromagnetic fury as they turned hundred-ton heaps of raw iron ore into blinding, liquid rivers of structural grade steel!

Up on the terrace, Austin reached up and unhitched his Shade-14 arc-welding goggles.

He pushed them up onto the curved brim of his midnight-blue Sovereign Hard Hat, pulled a shop rag from his back pocket, and mopped the grease and sweat from his forehead.

With bare eyes, he looked out across the valley.

The Second Sun hung steady in the zenith, radiating steady golden heat. The air smelled of hot transformer oil, wild peaches, and freshly clipped clover. Down along the terraces, three thousand cultivators in neon vests were singing cadence songs, their trenching shovels ringing against the slate.

"Right then," Austin muttered, tucking the rag back into his pocket. "Substation cleared. Grounding grid validated under peak transient load. Winter reserves banked. Time to go brew a fresh mug of chicory and rough out the grade elevations for the Tier 5 Mag-Lev guideway."

He took a slow, deep breath of mountain air.

Before he could even let it out—

A deep, bone-rattling thrum groaned across the high northern horizon.

*WUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.*

No crackle of static accompanied it.

No beast of lightning screamed from the mist.

It was the heavy, un-muffled, mechanical throb of twelve massive anti-gravity drive keels slicing through the upper cloud layer at three hundred miles per hour!

The shockwave rolled across thousands of leagues of open sky, hitting Mount Clear Sky as a sickening, low-frequency pulse that set the fillings rattling in cultivators’ molars and vibrated the porcelain bushings on Austin’s radiator towers.

Austin paused, his boot halfway to the first porch step.

He turned slowly toward the north.

Tearing through the high cirrus clouds came a wall of dark, unyielding iron.

Twelve colossal dreadnoughts—each five hundred feet of riveted Cold-Iron hull, bristling with heavy dragon-bone ballistas and void-cannons—broke through the cloud line, cruising in tight tactical formation:

**The Imperial Sun-Slayer Fleet of the Great Yan Dynasty** had arrived!
