Thermodynamics doesn't give a damn about imperial bloodlines.
Inside the fifty-foot dome of pitch-black void ice, heat transfer followed the cold, unyielding math of thermal conductivity. Eight point four gigawatts of negative thermal flux hammered straight against Austin’s chest plate.
High above on the teak quarterdeck of the *Sun-Slayer*, Grand Admiral Meng and ninety imperial formation elders were already preparing their victory libations. To them, the Ancient Dark-Ice Absolute Zero Cannon was the ultimate cosmic eraser. A concentrated beam of minus 273.15 degrees Celsius—ancient comet frost dredged from the graveyard of dead stars—engineered to quench celestial fires, shatter immortal souls, and turn continents into brittle obsidian glass.
Austin’s system readouts logged the apocalyptic blast under a completely different heading:
Deep in Austin’s dantian, the Sol-Class Golden Core barely flickered.
A miniature main-sequence star burning at five million Kelvin doesn't snuff out because someone dumped cold gas on it. Five hundred petawatts of steady thermonuclear fusion generates an aggressive amount of kinetic momentum. You don't put out a blast furnace with an ice cube. You just boil the ice cube.
For seventy-two grueling hours, ever since he had locked the Second Sun into a stable low-earth orbit, Austin’s thermal management loop had been screaming for mercy. All eight titanium radiator towers ringing the Obsidian Plaza had run flat-out at three thousand RPM. Day and night, their multi-ton induced-draft fans churned the southern sky into an ear-splitting turbine howl, struggling to reject ten solid gigawatts of low-grade waste heat into the troposphere.
Towers Three and Four had it worst. Running at ninety-two percent duty cycle, their pillow block bearings reeked of scorched synthetic grease. Their mechanical vibration switches had been chattering within a hair of their emergency trip limits.
Austin had spent the morning nursing a tension headache behind his temples, mentally tallying the astronomical cost of hauling three hundred gallons of industrial liquid nitrogen up from the valley storage tanks just to flush his primary cooling jacket.
Then this imperial battle fleet dropped out of the clouds and solved his maintenance backlog for free.
The instant that column of minus 273.15°C void frost struck Austin's sternum, the First Epoch Containment Mesh treated the attack as a scheduled fluid overhaul.
*CLACK-HISS.*
The external intake ports along the titanium weave snapped wide open. The pitch-black, light-devouring stream of absolute-zero slush was funneled straight into the superheated capillary heat exchangers wrapped around the stellar core.
Negative thermal flux slammed into the thermonuclear plasma like a bucket of well water dumped into a red-hot cast-iron skillet:
*TSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.*
The heat sink swallowed eight point four gigawatts of brutal thermal backpressure in under two seconds. The core’s magnetic field lines flexed, stabilized, and purred. The internal equilibrium reading drifted down from five million Kelvin to a silky, purring four million eight hundred and fifty thousand Kelvin.
Down on the Obsidian Plaza, the physical relief was immediate.
The eight cooling towers let out an enormous, pneumatic groan:
*WUUUUUURRRRRRRRR-shhhhhhh.*
The deafening, skull-rattling shriek of the induced-draft fans fell off a cliff. The turbine whine decelerated by sixty-eight point four percent, dropping from an industrial nightmare into a plush, serene, forty-decibel hum:
*Hummmmmmmmmmm.*
Inside the supervisory control bunker, Tie Kuang dropped his clipboard.
The brass clip clattered against the diamond-plate floor. The dwarf stood frozen, eyes bulging behind his safety glasses as he gaped at the analog dial gauges on the main SCADA board. The glowing red over-temp beacons on Towers Three and Four blinked out. Cool, soothing green indicator lamps clicked on with sharp mechanical snaps.
"The fan load dropped..." Tie Kuang croaked, clawing at the brim of his yellow hard hat. "The coolant return loop plummeted eighty degrees in four seconds! The head pressure on the primary manifold just normalized! Master Austin didn't get blasted to dust... he just got his coils flushed!"
Beside him, Old Patriarch Jiang Taixu stood rigid, both hands clutching his chest as if his lungs might burst through his silk tunic.
"Tie Kuang... speak sense!" Jiang Taixu gasped, his white beard trembling in the draft. "The Absolute Zero Cannon... the legendary weapon that froze the Western Marsh of Pingxi into three hundred leagues of solid crystal... that ancient beam of celestial doom..."
"I am speaking sense, you old goat!" Tie Kuang cackled, a feral grin splitting his soot-streaked face. "Those imperial dandies just gave Master Austin free on-site HVAC maintenance!"
Out on the plaza, the fifty-foot dome of void frost shuddered.
*CRACK.*
A hairline fracture sliced across the crystalline crest of the pitch-black dome.
Then another.
*CRACK-CRACK-POP.*
Three hundred feet overhead, leaning over the carved jade balustrade of the *Sun-Slayer*, Grand Admiral Meng froze mid-speech. His celebratory laughter choked in his windpipe.
Ninety imperial formation elders crowded against the railing, their gold-trimmed silk sleeves fluttering in the sudden updraft. Blood drained from their faces:
"Admiral... the comet ice! Look at the apex!"
"Impossible! The Absolute Zero matrix holds sovereign dragons in suspended stasis for millennia! It cannot fracture!"
*CRACK-SHATTER-POP!*
The fifty-foot mountain of black frost didn't shatter into lethal spiritual shrapnel.
It sublimated.
Under the rapid, controlled conduction of Austin’s containment mesh, the minus 273°C solid ice flashed straight into boiling, billowy plumes of pristine white vapor.
The mist rolled across the dark obsidian flagstones in thick, heavy banks. It smelled clean. Alpine ozone, damp mountain pine, and pure, filtered cleanroom exhaust. The sweltering summer air that had baked the summit all morning evaporated in seconds, replaced by the crisp, brisk chill of a late autumn dawn.
Footsteps sounded through the rolling fog.
*Clomp. Clomp. Clomp.*
Heavy, steel-toed work boots struck the stone with slow, unhurried rhythm.
Austin walked out of the vapor.
His blue denim dungarees showed zero burn marks, zero frostbite, and zero frayed stitching. His midnight-blue Sovereign Hard Hat sat squarely on his head, perfectly level. Resting easy across his right shoulder was his five-foot Stellar-Steel pipe wrench, its forged knurled handle glinting in the morning sun. Tucked snugly beneath his left arm was his heavy wooden clipboard, its stack of pink municipal citation slips crisp and dry.
Austin reached up with his right hand, pushed his dark green Shade-14 welding goggles onto the brim of his hard hat, and drew in a long, greedy breath of the chilled air:
"Haaaaaaah."
He rolled his neck until the vertebrae popped like firecrackers, letting out the deep, rumbling groan of a man clocking off after a twelve-hour shift:
"Oh, man... that hits the spot. That’s like stepping straight into a walk-in beer cooler after four solid hours of raking hot asphalt on the interstate in July."
He reached into his back pocket, pulled out a grease-spotted cotton shop rag, and leisurely wiped a ring of condensed vapor from the brass rims of his work spectacles. He held the lenses up to the morning sun, squinted through them, blew off a stray fleck of lint, and settled them back over his nose.
Then he tilted his head back and looked up at the eight-hundred-foot warship blotting out the clouds.
Austin cupped a work-hardened hand around his mouth and yelled up toward the gilded quarterdeck:
"Hey! Admiral!"
On the command bridge of the *Sun-Slayer*, Grand Admiral Meng stood locked in petrified silence.
His gauntlets went dead.
The gold-chased crystalline scrying telescope slipped from his fingers, tumbled through the balustrade, and plunged three hundred feet:
*Clatter-smash!*
The priceless ancient heirloom pulverized into glittering dust against the deck timber.
Behind Meng, forty-five elders dropped to their knees, clutching their throats as their spiritual cores pitched into violent turbulence. The foundational axioms of their martial reality were splintering beneath their boots:
"He... he walked out..."
"No spiritual armor. No defensive talisman."
"His cheeks have color! The man looks refreshed!"
Austin lowered his hand, took the five-foot Stellar-Steel pipe wrench off his shoulder, and leveled the heavy forged jaws straight at the flagship’s smoking frost cannon:
"Hey! Did your fleet dispatch that cryogenic chiller as a complimentary on-site service call?!"
Austin’s voice rolled across the mountain basin with the booming, effortless resonance of a veteran job superintendent across an open steel yard:
"Because I gotta tell you, Towers Three and Four were about to shake their pillow blocks right out of their mounts! Your flush pulled my core equilibrium down by a hundred and fifty thousand Kelvin in three seconds flat! Completely cleared out my thermal backpressure!"
Austin broke into a broad, genuine, five-star tradesman grin.
He thrust his right thumb high into the air, giving Grand Admiral Meng a cheerful, enthusiastic thumbs-up:
"You just saved this site three hundred gallons of liquid nitrogen and half a day of pump maintenance! That’s top-tier customer service, Admiral! I don't care what the county zoning board says—credit where credit's due!"
Austin tapped the brass spring-clip of his wooden board with his yellow grease pencil:
"Since you folks provided timely, unsolicited HVAC support, I’m knocking twenty percent off your municipal noise violation! Total fine is now reduced to four hundred and eighty thousand copper, plus the forty copper for the two shattered roof tiles!"
Grand Admiral Meng stared down from the high rail.
He stared at the denim dungarees.
He stared at the big, friendly, calloused thumb pointing straight at his bridge.
He listened to the twenty percent discount on his parking ticket.
Meng’s eyes bulged until the crimson capillaries in his whites resembled cracked porcelain. His jaw worked silently. His complexion marched through a grotesque sequence of shades: chalk white, bile green, and finally a dull, leaden, corpse-like grey.
Three centuries of imperial supremacy, battlefield butchery, and half-step divine transformation cultivation short-circuited all at once. The mental load was simply too heavy for human neural pathways to sustain.
"Twenty... percent... discount...?" Meng croaked, his lips quivering with unhinged delirium. "A... service call...?"
A violent tremor seized his spine.
*SPURT!*
A three-foot fountain of dark, concentrated spiritual life-blood erupted from Grand Admiral Meng’s mouth, painting the gilded dragon carvings of the bridge rail in thick crimson gore!
*SPURT! HACK!*
The supreme naval commander of the Great Yan Dynasty dropped like a sack of wet cement. He clawed at his armored gorget with both gauntlets, his knees slamming into the teak deck as his eyes rolled back into their sockets in absolute, shrieking cognitive collapse:
*"HE... HE TOOK THE SACRED COMET-CORE... THE SUPREME CANNON OF THE FIRST EPOCH... AND USED IT... AS A BLOODY AIR CONDITIONER?!"*
