Chapter 047: Crafting the Stellar Core Armor

Deep in Subterranean Floor 2, the four twin-crucible Stellar-Induction Blast Furnaces thrummed with the caged fury of trapped stars. Electromagnetic coils hummed at a bone-shaking sixty hertz, vibrating right through the boot soles of anyone within fifty yards. Sheets of harsh azure glare bounced off the vitrified white wall tiles, illuminating every joint in the masonry like an operating room.

High above the foundry floor, behind the three-inch quartz glass of the sealed observation gallery, Sect Master Gu Qing, Elder Song, and Supreme Grand Supervisor Tie Kuang had their noses flattened against the pane.

"He is preparing to forge..." Gu Qing whispered. His white whiskers twitched with devotional terror. "The Ancestor has stockpiled three thousand ingots of pure Cosmic Star-Steel and ten hopper carts of refined Adamantine dust. He is about to fashion His divine battle vestments!"

Elder Song gripped his collar, chest heaving like a dry bellows. "What heavenly majesty will manifest? The legendary *Nine-Dragons Solar Emperor Robes*, spun from solar threads?! An imperial mantle capable of turning an army of Golden Core masters to ash with one flick of its celestial sleeves?!"

"Listen to you sword-wavers babble!" Tie Kuang spat, wrenching his yellow hard hat straighter with a clatter of iron gauntlets. "You righteous sect dandies wouldn't know real craftsmanship if it fell on your skulls! Flowing silk robes in an active work drift? Loose sleeves just begging to wrap around a four-inch drive shaft and pull your ribs through a sprocket?! Garbage! The Patriarch follows the Supreme Dao of Heavy Mechanical Order! He is surely forging the *Colossal Asura Adamantine Aegis*—thirty feet of fluted dreadnought plate, cold-forged void-iron bands, and reinforced lifting lugs capable of wading through liquid magma while laughing at heavenly thunder tribulations!"

Down on the shop floor, entirely deaf to the theological debate raging behind the quartz glass, Austin wiped a smear of grime from his jaw with a greasy cotton rag.

He tossed the rag onto a rolling metal cart, kicked his frayed hemp sandals against the base of the master anvil, and groaned.

"Forty-six chapters," Austin grumbled into the hot air, rolling his stiff shoulders. "Forty-six straight chapters scrambling over blasted shale, hauling eighty-pound alloy bars, climbing raw timber staging, and sloshing through ditch water in five-copper hemp sandals. My arches are flatter than a sheet of plywood, my heels have calluses thick as bark, and if I drop one more twelve-millimeter combination wrench on my big toe, I'm going to red-tag my own feet."

He took a slow swig of tepid tea from a dented tin cup, spat a stray tea leaf onto the floor, and brought up his HUD with a crisp double-tap.

"Finally," Austin sighed, cracking his knuckles. "Actual PPE. Not robes, not parade armor. Just real, honest-to-god work gear."

He walked over to the ingot racks with a pair of long-handled bronze tongs. Four eighty-pound rectangular bars of Tier 4 Stellar-Steel sat on the cedar slats, cold to the touch but glowing with an internal sapphire phosphorescence. Austin clamped the first bar, hoisted it into the air with steady leverage, and dropped it into the induction furnace’s levitation crucible.

*Clank.*

Three more followed in smooth, measured cadence.

The electromagnetic coils let out a piercing harmonic whine as primary busbar voltage surged. Within forty seconds, the solid steel lost its edges, blooming into white-hot blue slag that hovered suspended in mid-air. Austin reached in with his tongs, gripped the superheated billet, and swung it onto the master anvil of cold-crystallized basalt.

*CLANG!*

The hammer blow rang out like a field gun.

No incantations. No theatrical bloodletting over hot slag. Austin worked with textbook tradesman discipline. He kept his elbow tucked, drove through his hips, and hit the metal at true right angles. He turned the billet at forty-five-degree flats, breaking down the crystalline grain boundaries and hammering the alloy into tight, overlapping directional laminations. Dazzling blue sparks showered the basalt floor. Each heavy blow blasted away scale and tightened the core.

Under his hammer, the cosmic alloy yielded, flattened, and split into three specific workpieces.

First came the footwear:

Austin took two thick, supple strips of naturally shed pangolin hide—gladly surrendered by Chonker in exchange for three roasted sweet potatoes and a good scratching behind the armored ears—and cut them with heavy shears. He stitched together the uppers of a pair of rugged, matte-black eight-inch work boots using triple-twisted aramid cords. Over the broad toe boxes, he cold-formed heavy protective caps from Tier 4 Stellar-Steel plate, rated to withstand twenty tons of direct compressive drop force without bulging a millimeter.

Beneath the heels, he didn't settle for hard leather soles that hammered the spine into sawdust. He built dual-chamber pneumatic vibration-dampening cavities, custom-molded orthopedic arch supports, breathable moisture-wicking liners, and retractable magnetic anchor studs embedded in oil-resistant rubber treads. He ran a heavy Goodyear welt around the perimeter, sealing the seams with liquid vulcanized resin so no ditch water or corrosive acid could seep through to the sock.

Second came the waist harness:

Austin forged a wide, articulated modular **Contractor’s Tool Belt**. He linked hundreds of interlocking micro-plates of flexible Stellar-Steel mesh, designed to transfer the downward dead-weight of heavy tools off the spine and seat it square on the pelvic girdle. He fitted the harness with quick-release magnetic detent holsters for his five-foot blue pipe wrench, metric combination wrenches, and brass measuring rule. On the left hip sat a reinforced, grease-proof pocket for his pressed-fiber clipboard and fresh yellow grease pencils.

Finally, he forged the crown piece:

A sleek, aerodynamic, low-profile **Safety Hard Hat**. Austin hammered the shell from a single seamless dome of midnight-blue Stellar-Steel, eliminating sharp external ridges so falling shale or dropped fasteners would deflect cleanly away from his collarbones. Inside the dome, he rigged an adjustable six-point ballistic suspension harness to absorb blunt shock. Right at the brow, he integrated a dual-beam solar-LED headlamp powered by microscopic wireless induction coils tied directly to his dantian's stellar field.

Austin gathered the pieces with his tongs and stepped up to the cryogenic quench manifold connected to the Floor 3 aquifer pipe.

*TSH-SH-SH-SHHHHHHHHH!*

A cloud of dry, ozone-laced steam blasted upward, swirling around the quench hood before the suction fan ripped it into the exhaust duct. The sapphire glow on the metal cooled into a deep, dignified midnight-blue sheen.

Austin pulled the pieces from the rack, dried them with a clean cotton rag, kicked off his frayed hemp sandals, and stepped into the kit.

*Click. Snap. Thud.*

The boots locked around his feet with custom-molded orthopedic precision.

Austin gasped. The high-density insoles rose up to cup his arches like solid, supportive hands. His heels dropped into deep, shock-absorbing cups, taking every trace of weight off his sore plantar fascia. The tool belt latched around his hips with a crisp magnetic *snap*, balancing the thirty-pound pipe wrench so cleanly that the lever felt like it was floating.

He tested the magnetic anchor studs against the steel floor grating. With a quick flex of his toes, the studs clicked downward, locking his boots to the steel deck with a solid, immovable grip that could hold him upright against a gale-force updraft. Another flex, and the magnets released with a clean mechanical click.

He reached down, took the handle of the big blue pipe wrench, drew it with a smooth upward tug—*shhhk*—and let it fall back toward his hip. The magnetic detent caught the tool with a solid, satisfying *CLACK*, seating it flush against his leg. Measuring rule, grease pencils, crescent wrenches—everything locked into place without a single rattle.

Austin picked up the midnight-blue hard hat, seated it on his brow, and snapped the quick-release chin strap shut beneath his jaw.

*BZZZZT.*

With a clean solid-state hum, the dual-beam headlamp ignited. Two parallel spears of 5000K daylight-white illumination knifed through the foundry gloom, cutting across three hundred yards of cavern with laser-straight clarity.

Austin took three firm strides across the basalt staging:

*THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.*

He stopped and bounced twice on the balls of his feet. The pneumatic heel chambers swallowed every ounce of kinetic rebound, returning a smooth, elastic lift.

A wide, genuine grin broke across Austin’s face.

"Sweet mother of tool trucks," Austin whispered in pure, unadulterated relief, wiggling his toes inside the steel caps. "The arch support on these things is an absolute miracle. Zero heel slip, rock-solid ankle stability, and no pinching at the Achilles tendon. I could stand on a vibrating concrete slab for sixteen straight hours and walk away without a single twinge in my lower lumbar."

Up in the observation gallery, Sect Master Gu Qing, Elder Song, and Tie Kuang dropped to their knees like cut trees, their foreheads slamming against the quartz glass in tearful adoration.

"LOOK UPON HIM!" Tie Kuang bawled, wiping snot from his beard as his fingers clawed at the glass. "No pointless peacock feathers! No ridiculous embroidered dragons to snag on rebar! Those boots... they grip the very bedrock of the realm with absolute gravitational authority! Each footstep anchors the mountain's meridians!"

"And that blue crown..." Gu Qing wept into his silk sleeves, his entire frame shuddering. "The twin solar eyes of creation! Piercing the primeval darkness to illuminate the true plumb line of reality! The Master Builder has donned the True Vestments of the Ancient Forge!"

The iron door of the observation gallery banged open. Tie Kuang came barreling down the metal flight of stairs three steps at a time, Gu Qing and Song tumbling behind him. The three cultivators hit the floor grates and skidded to their knees ten paces from the master anvil just as Austin strolled toward the freight elevator.

"Patriarch!" Tie Kuang panted, hoisting a polished brass tube. "A courier falcon from the imperial border outpost reached the surface yard five minutes ago. An urgent imperial parchment bears the square red seal of the Grand Marshall!"

Austin looked at the brass cylinder, then glanced at the magnetic watch mount on his wrist.

"Right on schedule," Austin said. He flicked the brim of his blue hard hat with his thumb, slotted his grease pencil into its hip pocket, and stepped onto the elevator platform. "Field test complete. PPE passes inspection with zero defects. Let's get up top and see what brand of bureaucratic nonsense the capital is trying to hand us."
