Chapter 053: Arrival at Canglan Grand Citadel

At the northern throat of the Red-Rock Valley, the sandstone cliffs fell away like an opened floodgate, spilling out into an endless sea of emerald river flats.

Rising from the basin like a mountain range of black basalt and quarried iron stood the ancient seat of provincial power: **The Grand Citadel of Canglan**.

It was an absolute monster of a city. Ten million souls lived within its perimeter—merchants, alchemical refiners, sect disciples, and sweating mortal porters. The outer defensive curtain reared a hundred feet into the summer sky, built from cyclopean blocks of volcanic stone interlocked with poured alchemical lead and mortared with ancient talismanic slurry. High over the battlements, dozens of wooden spirit skiffs patrolled the cloud banks, silk pennants snapping in the crosswinds. Below, choked lines of ox wagons, iron-banded freight carriages, and traveling swordsmen stretched half a league back from the city’s twenty outer gates.

Austin stopped on the brow of the hill overlooking the southern approach, pulling a brass telescope from his modular leather tool belt.

He thumbed the knurled focus ring, wiped a smudge of machine grease off the eyepiece with his thumb, and swept the fortifications from parapet to footer.

"Tsk, tsk, tsk," Austin muttered, shaking his head until his midnight-blue hard hat clicked. "Subcontractors cut every corner in the book. Look at the bottom four ashlar courses. Mortar joint erosion is already three inches deep in places. The expansion relief joints haven't seen a fresh bead of caulk since the previous dynasty."

Li Xiaoyao stepped up beside him, pulling a pocket ledger and a sharpened charcoal stick from his traveling pouch. "Does the Patriarch perceive a fatal flaw in the grand ancestral wards?"

"Forget the wards, look at the masonry plumbing," Austin grunted, squinting through the optics. "Two of those upper parapet drainage scuppers are choked solid with pigeon nests and hardened lime. When the autumn monsoon hits this river valley, stormwater's gonna sheet down that masonry face without a proper drip edge. See that white salt efflorescence streaking down the facade like dried toothpaste? That's capillary suction drawing water deep into the stone seams. Basalt's got decent compressive strength, but trapped moisture in unvented masonry will freeze come December. First freeze-thaw cycle, trapped water pressure will blow those face blocks clean off their footings and right into the moat."

Xiaoyao scribbled furiously, eyes round with spiritual wonder. "The Great Yan Ministry of Works spends three million spirit stones every year on masonry maintenance talismans! Yet none among their grandmasters comprehend the sacred Dao of Trapped Water Pressure!"

"Ain't no Dao, Xiaoyao," Austin said, collapsing the brass telescope with a hollow *clack*. "Just basic exterior envelope maintenance. A fifty-cent tube of polyurethane sealant saves a ten-million-dollar foundation failure. Neglect your weep holes, you lose the whole curtain wall. Pure municipal negligence."

They started down the gravel grade, joining the noisy, dusty queue snaking toward the **Southern Azure Gate**.

The approach was a chaotic bottleneck. Caravan drivers cursed at balking oxen. Proud young masters in lavender silks drifted past on glowing hover-swords, sneering down at the mortal porters who scrambled into the drainage ditches to avoid their wake. The air smelled of woodsmoke, roasted nuts, camel dung, and cheap spirit incense.

Cerberus Pug ambled along behind the mules with a heavy, bowlegged waddle.

Ahead of them in line, an aristocratic merchant’s prized six-legged horned spirit-bull caught one whiff of the hound's obsidian hide. The beast let out a terrified, strangled squeal, rolled its eyes back in its skull until only the whites showed, and tried to climb backward over the wagon tongue, snapping two oak spokes with a loud crack.

Pug barely blinked.

His middle head snorted a tidy ring of gray woodsmoke, while his right head chewed thoughtfully on an old brass wagon hub he’d scavenged out of a scrap ditch two miles back. His left head sniffed the rear wheel of an ox cart, sneezing when a cloud of chaff flew into his nostrils. Austin reached down without looking and gave Pug’s center head a firm, two-finger scratch behind the velvety ear. Pug let out a low, vibrating hum that made the gravel beneath their boots rattle like dry beans.

At the entrance to the hundred-foot archway stood the imperial inspection checkpoint.

Captain Meng leaned against a carved basalt balustrade, clad in gold-chased black plate armor. A mid-stage Foundation Realm officer with a neatly trimmed beard and cold, aristocratic eyes, Meng oversaw twenty imperial guards armed with nine-foot spirit halberds.

In Meng's left palm rested the **Heaven-Reflecting Jade Compass**, an exquisite brass-and-jade instrument crafted by the Imperial Ministry of Works to measure spiritual energy flux and flag unregistered demonic payloads. Behind the guards, the cavernous archway shimmered with the translucent blue light of the **Four-Seas Defensive Barrier**—an ancient imperial formation rooted deep within the city’s spiritual ley lines, capable of deflecting siege boulders and Golden Core bombardment.

Austin walked straight into the central inspection lane, his boots thumping the pavers: *Clomp, clomp, clomp.*

Denim dungarees, modular leather tool belt, steel-toed boots, and dented midnight-blue hard hat. The five-foot iridescent blue pipe wrench rested securely in its vertical thigh holster. Twelve gray pebbles and thirty dried pine needles circled smoothly around his ankles, spinning at three revolutions per minute in silent gravitational orbit.

Xiaoyao followed close behind with the two pack-mules, while Pug padded in the rear with the camping gear.

Captain Meng looked up from his parchment roster.

His eyes swept over Austin’s grease-stained denim, the yellow grease pencil tucked behind his ear, and the rough canvas rucksack. A sneer curled his upper lip.

"Halt right there, laborer," Meng barked, stepping forward and resting a heavy gauntlet on his saber hilt. "The central lane is reserved for certified tournament competitors, registered merchant syndicates, and imperial dignitaries. Migrant stone-haulers enter through the western ditch. What's in the wooden crates on those mules?"

Austin tapped the brim of his hard hat with a blunt forefinger. "Metallurgical alloy samples for the trade expo. And this ain't ditch-digger gear; it’s certified Tier 4 PPE."

Meng snorted loudly, and three guards chuckled into their iron gorgets.

"Certified PPE? What kind of peasant dialect is that?" Meng mocked, waving his hand dismissively. "Step forward. Let’s see what unlicensed quarry scrap you’re trying to sneak into the capital."

Meng took two paces forward, raising the Heaven-Reflecting Jade Compass to scan the pack-mules.

The brass instrument crossed the three-meter boundary around Austin's boots.

Physics took offense.

The compass needle, calibrated to register subtle ripples of spiritual qi, ran headfirst into the crushing gravitational density of Austin’s **White Dwarf Seed** and the heavy magnetic flux of his Stellar-Steel soles.

*SKRRRRRR-BZZZZZT!*

The delicate bronze needle didn't swing. It blurred into a screaming gray disc.

Ten thousand revolutions per minute. Twenty thousand. Thirty thousand.

*CRACK!*

The central crystal pivot sheared clean in half under violent spinning torque. The internal jade talismanic circuit overloaded in a blinding flash of purple light. A geyser of violet sparks, spitting solder, and foul-smelling burnt varnish sprayed straight into Captain Meng’s face!

"GAH! MY COMPASS!" Meng yelped, dropping the flaming, blackened brass casing onto the cobblestones.

Before the captain could draw his saber in outrage, a gut-wrenching, metal-fatigue groan rattled through the hundred-foot basalt archway above their heads:

*KRRRRRR-CREEEEEAK!*

The translucent blue dome of the Four-Seas Defensive Barrier warped.

The ancient ward didn't shatter. It didn't bounce back. Seized by the relentless gravitational curvature of the White Dwarf Seed, the massive spiritual barrier stretched inward like a rubber diaphragm, sagging toward Austin’s denim bib!

Alarm sirens exploded across the battlements.

*WURRRRRR-CLANG-CLANG-CLANG!*

Defensive runes along the parapets flared crimson. Above the clouds, three patrol skiffs hit localized gravitational turbulence and wobbled like drunken kites.

Captain Meng staggered backward, his boots slipping on the slick pavers.

He stared through watering eyes at the warped sky, then looked down at the young man in denim.

Down by Austin’s feet, twelve gray pebbles and thirty dried pine needles floated three inches off the stones, tracing flawless, frictionless, elliptical orbits around the scuffed leather toes.

*Spacetime... it's warping around his boots...* Meng's mind went numb with paralyzed horror. *Gravitational lensing... That's not a mortal laborer... THAT’S A CONDENSED STAR WALKING THE EARTH!*

Meng’s knees gave out. He hit the stone on his backside with an undignified clatter, plate armor banging against the paving like dropped saucepans.

Austin looked down at the charred, smoking compass on the ground and sighed, shaking his head.

"Cheap solder on the ground circuit," Austin said, his voice flat and clinical. "Every single time. You run unshielded consumer diagnostic gadgets next to high-density magnetic alloys, inductive eddy currents fry the sensor board. Zero EMI shielding. You boys need to upgrade your diagnostic gear to industrial-grade enclosures. If you don't ground your chassis, magnetic flux will cook your internals every shift."

Austin reached into the front document sleeve of his canvas pack, pulling out the rolled scroll of imperial yellow silk that Chancellor Wei had delivered at Sunset Peak. He extended it toward the paralyzed officer.

"Here's my entry slip," Austin said. "Paperwork says this is the express lane."

Meng looked at the scroll with bulging, bloodshot eyes.

Stamped into the heavy gold silk was the deep crimson wax impression of the **Nine-Clawed Azure Dragon**—the personal crest of the Provincial Governor—interlocked with the imperial private seal of the **Crown Prince of the Great Yan Dynasty**.

Meng’s soul nearly detonated inside his skull.

*THE SUPREME PATRIARCH OF SUNSET PEAK! THE ANCIENT SOVEREIGN GUEST THE PALACE ORDERED US TO RECEIVE WITH EMPEROR-LEVEL PROTOCOLS!*

Meng flipped over onto all fours, slamming his helmeted forehead against the cobblestones so hard he gouged a chip out of the granite!

*CLANG!*

"GRAND ANCESTOR! SPARE THIS BLIND DOG'S EYES!" Meng shrieked, his voice carrying over the entire southern plaza. "GUARDS! CLEAR THE PLAZA! STRIKE THE IMPERIAL CHIMES! OPEN THE CENTRAL EMPEROR’S PORTAL FOR THE SUPREME MASTER!"

*GONGGGGGGGG——!*

Nine colossal bronze chimes tolled from the highest citadel tower, vibrating the air above the metropolis.

The eighty-foot **Central Emperor’s Gate**—gilded bronze portals opened only for the reigning sovereign or victorious grand marshals—began to groan open on massive counterweighted hinges. Down the wide royal thoroughfare, soldiers scrambled frantically to roll out an eight-foot-wide strip of scarlet carpet stretching straight toward the inner palace district.

A hundred thousand merchants, swordsmen, and porters along the walls dropped to their knees in paralyzed silence.

Austin watched the giant bronze doors swing open, then glanced back at the peasant lane where forty grain carts were locked in a shouting three-hour gridlock.

"Well," Austin said, tucking his grease pencil behind his ear. "Look at that. Finally, a municipal checkpoint with an automated fast-pass lane. Decent customer service. It always pays to keep your transit permits organized."

Austin hitched his tool belt, shouldered his canvas pack, and strolled calmly through the eighty-foot gates, the pebbles humming around his boots, leading Xiaoyao, the mules, and Pug straight into the beating heart of the provincial capital.
