Chapter 082: Trial 1: The Mirror Maze

The entrance to Sector 1 sat beneath a heavy titanium lintel bearing a weathered First Epoch safety stencil in diagonal hazard stripes:

**[CHAMBER 01: OPTICAL SENSOR CALIBRATION & PHOTONIC RANGE TESTING]**

In the imperial records of the Great Yan Empire, this doorway went by a far more terrifying title: **The Ten-Thousand-Illusion Mirror Labyrinth of the Dao Heart**.

According to monastery scrolls, anyone who crossed this threshold became trapped in an infinite hall of living glass. The mirrors bypassed flesh and bone, peering straight into the darkest cellar of a cultivator’s soul. They dredged up bitter regrets, worldly lusts, unfulfilled ambitions, and howling inner demons.

Ancient sages had spent lifetimes in this room. The historical record-holder—Venerable Master Wuxin of the Cloud-Mist Monastery—spent one hundred and twenty-four years, seven months, and twelve days sitting cross-legged on the bare floor tiles. He let his beard grow down to his shins, sipped condensation off the glass, and starved out his mortal desires until his Dao heart became as cold and still as well water. Only then did the labyrinth yield, revealing the single True Reflection that unlocked the exit hatch. Lesser men had lost their minds in weeks, hacking at their own reflections until their hands splintered to bone.

Austin pushed open the titanium door with the toe of his work boot.

*BZZZZT.*

The chamber erupted into a dizzying hall of mirrors.

Aluminized quartz glass panels lined every wall, floor, and ceiling, polished to perfect optical flatness. Reflections stretched into receding infinity, repeating Austin, Li Xiaoyao, and Cerberus Pug down endless, impossible angles.

Beneath the floor joints, a low-pressure glycol fogger hissed to life.

White vapor rolled across the floorboards, carrying the sharp, sweet smell of heated mineral oil and ethylene glycol. From the glass stepped towering, three-dimensional light projections: celestial maidens draped in translucent gossamer silks, holding golden chalices brimming with shimmering wine; mountains of imperial spirit jade and ancestral flying swords; and twelve-eyed demon warlords clad in spiked bone armor, shaking flaming halberds while roaring threats of cosmic damnation.

A multi-layered, breathy voice echoed from hidden speakers in the ceiling, rich with simulated stereo reverb:

*"Mortal wanderer... drop your heavy tools... why toil in the grease and dust when the immortal jade halls await?... Surrender to endless pleasure... let your soul sleep upon silk and lotus petals..."*

Li Xiaoyao gasped. His Foundation Realm sea of consciousness wobbled violently. His pupils dilated, swimming with visions of imperial thrones and celestial concubines. He slapped his hands together in a prayer lock, squeezed his eyes shut, and began reciting the Clear Sky Heart Sutra at breakneck speed, veins standing out on his neck as he fought the mental assault.

Pug, meanwhile, glanced at a howling twelve-eyed demon lord.

The eight-hundred-pound Nether-Solar Cerberus didn't even stand up. His middle head let out a heavy, bored puff of nether-air that carried the scent of cured beef rind, blew away a cloud of stage fog, and turned around to sniff a brass floor scupper. A loose black nylon cable tie dangled from a low-voltage conduit bracket near the floor. Pug’s right head clamped onto the plastic tail, happily gnawing with wet, squeaking crunches: *chomp, chomp, squeak.*

Austin stood dead-center in the hall, chewing on a dried strip of venison jerky.

He looked at the maidens. He looked at the demon warlord. He looked at the floating wine cups.

No sutras. No defensive meditation.

Austin pushed his wire-rimmed safety glasses up his nose, squinted at the ceiling, and brought up his system diagnostics.

Austin sighed. He clicked his yellow grease pencil against his clipboard with the dull disappointment of a building inspector walking onto a condemned job site.

"A hundred and forty milliseconds of audio latency," Austin muttered, shaking his head. "Look at that sync track. She said 'lotus petals' two full tenths of a second after the ultrasonic transducer fired. The audio isn't even time-aligned with the laser scanner."

He peered up into the ceiling framework.

Above the mirrors, an ungrounded three-phase two-hundred-eight-volt distribution circuit fed the projector heads. The builders hadn't run a separate neutral bus. Instead, they bootlegged the neutral straight to the galvanized ceiling grid with rusted self-tapping screws. Sub-zero coolant loops feeding the laser chillers were sweating condensation all over the bare wire nuts.

"Disgraceful wiring," Austin grunted. "They ran unshielded sensor cables right inside the same wire trough as a high-voltage three-phase feeder. That's why the audio's jittering. Cross-talk across the whole wire harness. If an inspector saw this spaghetti mess, he'd lock out the main disconnect before lunch."

A holographic celestial maiden drifted close, leaning down to whisper into his ear:

*"Brave artisan... leave this endless toil... all the treasures of the nine skies belong to you..."*

"Ma'am, your ergonomic posture is completely shot," Austin said flatly, pointing his grease pencil at her lower back. "Look at that lumbar arch. You've got an extreme anterior pelvic tilt from floating around without core bracing. Five years of that and your L4-L5 disc is going to look like a blown tire. Also, those golden cups have never passed a lead leach test. Serving acidic citrus wine out of uncertified cast brass is an emergency room visit waiting to happen."

The projection sputtered, caught in an unhandled dialogue exception, and looped back to its idle breathing animation.

Austin ignored the maidens and the howling demon lords entirely.

He reached up and tapped the right temple of his midnight-blue safety hard hat, toggling his display mode from Standard Optical to **Wireframe Collision Geometry View**.

*BEEP.*

The shimmering mirrors, the fog, and the screaming CGI warlords blinked out of existence.

In their place sprang crisp, neon-green vector grids outlining the true physical geometry of the room. Austin saw the six-inch reinforced concrete subfloor, the cold-rolled galvanized steel studs, the suspended HVAC trunks, and the rigid structural perimeter walls.

He swept his gaze systematically across the room, checking the corners with practiced tradesman precision.

In the far northwest corner, seventy feet away, the wireframe broke.

Austin’s eyes went wide behind his spectacles.

A wide, unhinged grin spread across Austin’s jaw.

"Look at that," he whispered under his breath. "An unsealed drywall seam in the northwest corner. The junior environmental modeler forgot to close the vertex loop. Zero collision geometry on the backface."

He tapped his grease pencil against the clipboard edge, chuckling low in his throat.

"Master Wuxin sat on his ass for a hundred and twenty-four years, starving his flesh to solve this maze. Why walk two miles of zig-zagging partition walls when the contractor forgot to tape the sheetrock?"

Austin turned toward Li Xiaoyao, who was still trembling on his knees, sweating through his robes while muttering sutras against the illusory demons. Austin reached down and caught the boy by the collar, hauling him upright.

"Snap out of it, Xiaoyao. It's just a looped projector reel on an ungrounded circuit," Austin said briskly. "Grab the rucksack and stay on my heels. Tuck your elbows in. We're clipping out of bounds."

Austin turned on his heel and walked straight across the room. He didn't follow the winding corridors or the intended labyrinth walkways. He cut straight across the floor at a diagonal angle, stepping directly through three rows of illusory mirror panels that dissolved into cool drafts of air under his boots.

He stopped in front of the northwest corner.

To normal eyes, the corner was a solid, seamless quartz mirror projecting a terrifying hologram of a bottomless caldera filled with bubbling sulfur and purple lightning.

Austin didn't even look at the sulfur.

He unslung his **Five-Foot Stellar-Steel Pipe Wrench** from his shoulder. With casual, measured leverage, he drove the tapered blue steel handle into the invisible eighteen-centimeter gap between the two ceramic panels:

*PRY-CRACK.*

The texture mesh tore open like wet cardboard. A jagged streak of purple visual static and unrendered magenta-and-black checkerboard patterns flared across the seam.

Austin stepped right through.

His steel-toed work boots, his Carhartt dungarees, his clipboard, his hard hat, and the one hundred and twelve orbital particles whistling around his shins slid through the solid wall as smoothly as a trowel sliding through fresh mortar.

Li Xiaoyao shrieked, covered his face with his sleeves, and jumped through right behind him!

Pug bounded after them with a muffled *huff*, his three heads grinning, the chewed nylon zip-tie still dangling from the corner of his right jaws!

For three paces, they weren't in a hallway. They walked across an infinite, featureless gray plane—the raw, unrendered null-space outside the level geometry. Looking back over his shoulder, Austin could see right through the back of the maze walls; the engine's backface culling made the entire labyrinth transparent from the outside. Beneath their boots lay the bottomless gray void of the facility physics engine.

Three strides forward:

*POP.*

Their work boots struck polished floor tiles with a sharp, resonant *clack*.

They stood in the clean, brightly lit **Sector 1 Exit Staging Lobby**.

Behind them, the reinforced titanium blast doors leading into the mirror maze were still locked from the inside, deadbolts firmly thrown.

On the lobby wall, an automated diagnostic terminal erupted in a flurry of high-pitched electronic chimes:

*BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-DING!*

Austin pulled his silver pocket watch from his watch pocket, checking the split-second hand with a curt nod.

"Forty-four point eight seconds," Austin said, brushing drywall dust off his denim sleeve. "Clean out-of-bounds skip. Saved on stamina potions and skipped forty minutes of unskippable cutscene dialogue."

Beside him, Li Xiaoyao’s knees gave out completely.

He slid down the wall until he hit the tiles, his eyes glassy, his hands shaking in utter spiritual shock. He stared back at the seamless, four-foot-thick reinforced ceramic wall they had just walked through like a ghost through fog:

"One hundred and twenty-four years..." Xiaoyao whispered, his voice cracking on the verge of madness. "Venerable Master Wuxin withered his mortal shell for over a century... and the Patriarch cleared the supreme trial of the Dao Heart in forty-four seconds... by prying open the drywall..."

Austin tapped his clipboard with his grease pencil, pointing toward the heavy blast door humming at the end of the lobby:

"Up on your feet, Xiaoyao. That was just Chamber One. Grab the rucksack. Let's see what kind of sequence-breaking we can pull off on the Gravity Bridge."
