Julian crossed the yellow bio-line back into Nurse Station 4B as the final midnight chime faded into the ceiling tiles.
He unclipped the telemetry earpiece from his collar, his hand steady as he laid the anodized aluminum Master Clipboard back into its desk bracket.
“All twelve door tags certified,” Julian said, his breath coming smooth and even. “Room 406 is locked down with the electromagnetic deadbolt under Rule B-2. The ward is held.”
Elena let out a long breath, resting her forehead against her knuckles for two seconds before snapping her clinical focus back into place.
“Good work, Julian,” Elena said. She glanced up at the Simplex wall clock.
12:03:15 AM.
“Now we have Clara’s midnight levetiracetam infusion,” Elena said, her voice dropping into brisk nursing routine. “She’s on a continuous anti-seizure drip at two milligrams per minute. Her traumatic brain injury leaves her cortical threshold dangerously unstable.”
“If her serum concentration drops below twelve milligrams per deciliter, subclinical status epilepticus starts within twenty minutes, and uncontrolled micro-seizures will cook her brain tissue before dawn. I have to pull the midnight cassette from the automated dispenser.”
