The red alarm horn shrieked with an ear-splitting sixty-hertz buzz.
Beneath Julian’s rubber soles, the diamond-plate deck shuddered as the elevator plunged through the damp shaft.
The analog scale needle stayed pinned at six hundred and forty-two pounds.
“Julian, the tare limit!” Elena shouted over the siren. “Six hundred pounds is the structural ceiling!”
“I’m reading the rule,” Julian answered, his eyes fixed on the stamped brass plaque bolted beside the gate.
“Otis Morgue Lift Rule M-Three,” Elena recited, her voice tight with urgency. “Service Elevator Four has a night tare limit of six hundred pounds.”
“What happens if we cross the B2 sill while overweight?” Julian asked. “What’s the penalty?”
“The mechanical safety dogs trip!” Elena shouted back. “The automatic interlock reclassifies the entire cab as bulk cadaver freight!”
