The black crescent screeched across the courtyard like a falling iron plow.
Air pressure slammed against Kaelen’s chest before the blade even arrived. The fifteen-meter wave gouged a trench four feet deep through the solid granite flagstones, throwing up a curtain of pulverized stone and red sparks.
Across the perimeter, the Vance elders collapsed against the compound wall.
They could barely draw breath. The magistrate was an Iron Bone cultivator, a full Major Realm above the mortal plane. His mere presence generated a ten-fold Law Suppression that pressed down on mortal blood like heavy river silt.
Mortal Pulse warriors could not fight under that weight. Their muscles seized, and their circulating Qi slowed to a crawl.
Two elderly Vance councilmen huddled behind the outer gate. Their hands shook against the cold iron bars as they watched the black blade scream forward.
“The magistrate is executing the boy,” one councilman whispered, his eyes wide with horror. “No mortal body can withstand the weight of an Iron Bone decree.”
Derrick Vance crouched near the shattered courtyard pillar, raising one trembling arm to shield his eyes from the flying gravel.
“He is finished!” Derrick shouted, his voice cracking with desperate hysteria. “Not even Master Ash can parry an Iron Bone martial art!”
Kaelen did not run. He did not even flinch.
Behind his eyes, the silver tally of the Fallow Slate spun at blinding speed.
[Target: Magistrate Vane-Locke (Iron Bone Early)] [Environmental Status: 10x Major Realm Law Suppression Active] [Fallow Comprehension: 241x Active (1,205 Hours Equivalent Analysis)] [Pill-Poison Defect Detected: Left Subclavian Channel]
To Kaelen, the shrieking wave of dark energy looked slow and clumsy.
With twelve hundred hours of compressed observation burning through his senses, he saw every seam in Vane-Locke’s technique. The magistrate practiced the Black-Yamen Iron Fist, an imperial art built around crushing weight and iron-plated momentum.
Yet the man’s foundation was rotten.
Vane-Locke had consumed hundreds of Crack-Grade and Standard-Grade Qi-condensing pills over thirty years to force his breakthrough. Dense clumps of dark Pill-Poison sediment choked the junction beneath his left collarbone.
Every time the magistrate swung his right arm, that clogged junction twitched. The black Qi thinned to a hairline seam for a quarter of a heartbeat.
Why do corrupt officials always eat trash pills? Kaelen wondered mildly. If you are going to steal grain taxes from three counties, at least hire a real alchemist. This man’s meridians look like an uncleaned chimney.
Vane-Locke stood forty feet away, watching his iron crescent race toward Kaelen’s neck.
A cruel grin stretched across the magistrate’s face. He raised his armored left hand, casually adjusting the wide silk sleeve of his robe as if the fight were already over.
“You have some talent, boy!” Vane-Locke bellowed over the roar of the wind. “Disarming twenty dogs with one strike is impressive for a country bumpkin. But you have never seen the true authority of the state!”
The black crescent closed the distance, its cutting edge only six paces from Kaelen’s face.
“My Black-Yamen Iron Fist is tempered with river-bottom iron sand,” Vane-Locke continued loudly, savoring the sound of his own voice. “It turns bone into cold steel and renders mortal weapons useless. When I crush your skull, your family will pay for the ink used to write your death warrant!”
Kaelen adjusted his grip on the spirit-iron broadsword.
“Stop explaining your technique,” Kaelen said, his voice cutting clean through the shrieking gale. “You melted my stew-pot and owe me for ten days of naps.”
The magistrate’s boast died in his throat.
Vane-Locke’s eyes flashed with incredulous rage. “What did you say?”
“You heard me,” Kaelen said calmly. “A good pot costs three hundred copper bits, and my tea is getting cold.”
Before the magistrate could spit another curse, Kaelen moved.
The fifteen-meter crescent cleaved through the space where Kaelen’s head had been half a second prior.
Kaelen did not leap backward or throw himself into the dirt. Using Transcendent Ash-Wind Footwork, he stepped diagonally into the vacuum directly behind the flying blade.
The black crescent smashed into the kitchen facade behind him.
Granite pillars shattered into gravel. Roof beams collapsed in an explosion of burning cedar shingles and mortar dust.
Kaelen ignored the destruction at his back.
He closed the forty-foot gap between himself and the magistrate in a single, fluid glide. His cloth shoes barely brushed the edges of the newly carved trench.
Vane-Locke saw the blurred silhouette appear before him.
The magistrate reacted with the instinct of a seasoned killer. He pulled his right fist back, bringing his armored forearms together into an iron cross-block to shield his chest.
“Die, insect!” Vane-Locke snarled.
Kaelen did not use his standard thirty-fold safe output. Against the crushing ten-fold Law Suppression of an Iron Bone expert, a safe strike would merely bounce off the magistrate’s iron-clad forearms.
He reached deep into his tempered dantian and wrenched the valve wide open.
[Warning: Combat Overload Engaged] [Output: 60x Multiplier (200% Safe Threshold Limit)] [Vance Clan Blade: Transcendent Dao Intent Fused (400% Strike Force)] [Physical Advisory: Severe Right Arm Tendon Strain — 6 Hours Numbness]
A violent jolt of white-hot power surged down Kaelen’s arm.
His muscles tightened like wound spring-steel. The spirit-iron broadsword in his right hand began to vibrate at an ear-splitting pitch, shedding its coat of gray rust in a cloud of metallic powder.
This is going to ruin my tea-pouring hand for the rest of the evening, Kaelen thought with deep disgust. First Brother will never hear the end of this bill.
Kaelen thrust the broadsword forward.
He did not aim for the thick iron bracers protecting Vane-Locke’s heart. He angled the tip upward by two inches, targeting the hollow beneath the left collarbone where the Pill-Poison blocked the flow of iron Qi.
Vane-Locke tried to shift his left arm to close the gap.
His clogged meridian failed him. The dark iron Qi hesitated for a single, fatal fraction of an instant.
The broadsword point struck home.
Crack.
The sound was not the dull thud of steel hitting flesh. It sounded like a bronze bell splitting apart under a siege mallet.
The sixty-fold combat overload combined with four-hundred-percent Transcendent Dao Intent. Even after the ten-fold Law Suppression stripped away the outer shockwave, the concentrated force punched straight through the dark spirit-iron armor.
The cheap spirit-iron blade could not survive its own strike.
The broadsword shattered into three dozen jagged shards. Steel fragments flew in all directions, whistling like shrapnel through the courtyard smoke.
The kinetic energy did not dissipate.
The impact passed through the broken hilt and directly into Vane-Locke’s skeleton.
The magistrate’s black armor caved inward like a stamped tin cup. The tempered iron bones of his ribcage snapped cleanly, pulverized by an impossible concentration of mortal force.
Vane-Locke’s eyes bulged.
The dark Qi coating his skin dissolved into greasy black smoke. He flew backward through the air, tumbling forty feet across the courtyard before crashing into the stone basin of the central fountain.
The heavy granite basin split in two.
Water and pulverized stone splashed across the cobblestones, hissing against the burning coals.
Vane-Locke lay motionless among the wet debris. His chest was sunken two inches below his shoulders, and his iron-encased hands lay limp at his sides.
The imperial magistrate was dead.
The entire Vance compound fell into complete, petrified silence.
Across the shattered courtyard, thirty clan guards dropped their spears. None of them dared to breathe. A Mortal Pulse youth had just crossed an entire cultivation realm to kill an Iron Bone imperial magistrate with a single thrust.
In the northern province, such an event had not occurred in two hundred years.
Derrick Vance dropped to his knees beside the cracked courtyard pillar.
The baron’s face was white as a funeral shroud. His fingers clawed at the wet cobblestones as he stared at the shattered fountain basin.
“He killed an Iron Bone master,” Derrick whispered, his voice trembling so hard his teeth clicked together. “Without an Iron Bone body or an earth-grade weapon, he broke the imperial law of realms.”
Behind the kitchen wall, Old Barnaby lowered his butcher knife.
The old alchemist let out a long, ragged whistle. He leaned his back against a charred timber, wiping a smear of soot from his forehead with his sleeve.
“The boy swings like a runaway grain cart,” Barnaby muttered, shaking his head slowly. “He told the magistrate to stop talking because his stew-pot melted. If anyone ever burns his blanket, the whole province will burn down with it.”
Sera Thorne walked out into the clearing, her spear held low.
She looked at Vane-Locke’s collapsed chest, then looked down at the shattered blade fragments littering the flagstones. Her calculating gray eyes took in the boy’s posture.
“Your right arm is hanging slack,” Sera observed quietly as she approached. “Did the feedback tear the ligament?”
“Tendon strain,” Kaelen replied.
His right arm hung dead at his side, numb from the shoulder to the fingertips. The sixty-fold overload had pushed his tempered mortal flesh to the absolute limit.
Six hours of dead numbness, Kaelen noted inwardly with mild irritation. Now Mina will insist on spoon-feeding me herbal soup while lecturing me about reckless behavior. I would rather fight three more magistrates.
The pantry door opened a few inches.
Mina poked her head out into the smoke. She held a thick wool blanket wrapped tight around her shoulders, her star-blue eyes scanning the courtyard. When she saw the collapsed fountain and the dead magistrate, her small mouth fell open.
“Kaelen?” she called out hesitantly. “Is the noise finished?”
“Go back inside, Mina,” Kaelen called over his shoulder. “Keep your boots on. There is broken glass near the threshold.”
“Did you break your arm again?” Mina asked, stepping out onto the porch despite his instruction.
“It is resting,” Kaelen said. “Arms need rest after hard work, just like people.”
Barnaby let out a rough bark of laughter. “Listen to him lie to his sister. The lad blew his shoulder out killing a county official, and he calls it a nap!”
Kaelen walked over to the shattered fountain basin with slow, unhurried steps.
Town elders who had gathered near the outer gates peered through the iron railings, their expressions frozen in terror. They recognized the magistrate’s corpse, and they recognized the third son of the Vance family standing over it.
One gray-bearded elder from the merchant quarter clutched his robes. “This is high treason. The provincial garrison will march on Ashford by tomorrow noon.”
“Let them march,” Barnaby snapped from the porch. “Tell them to bring their own stew-pots. This one is ruined.”
Kaelen paid the elders no mind.
He reached down with his left hand, grabbing the collar of Vane-Locke’s expensive silk robe.
The fabric was stained with greasy black soot and fountain water. Kaelen dragged the body out of the puddle and turned it onto its back.
He searched the inner lining of the magistrate’s sleeves.
He pulled out two jade bottles filled with inferior Crack-Grade pills, tossing them aside into the mud without a second glance. Then his left fingers brushed against a heavy, cold object hidden inside the inner breast pocket.
Kaelen drew it out into the dim firelight.
It was a heavy medallion cast from black bronze. The metal was dense, cold, and etched with the serpentine cauldron emblem of the Nine-Cauldron Guild.
Across the center of the medallion, three sharp characters were carved in crimson lacquer.
Harvest Quota.
Beneath the title, a series of registration numbers listed high-sediment mortal cultivators from Ashford and the surrounding border towns.
Kaelen held the medallion in his left palm, letting his thumb trace the cold bronze edges as the Fallow Slate updated behind his brow.
[Burst Window Remaining: 40 Minutes] [Current Multiplier: 241x Active] [Cultivation: Mortal Pulse Rank 9 Peak (Right Arm Numb — 6h)] [Remaining Wealth: 450 Low-Grade Spirit Stones]
The Nine-Cauldron Guild was supposed to be a neutral trading organization that sold medicinal pills to border clans. Yet here was an imperial magistrate carrying an official guild token marked with an extraction quota for local cultivators.
A harvest quota for cultivators with high pill sediment, Kaelen thought, his eyes narrowing slightly. They are not just selling cheap pills to make a profit. They are fattening livestock for slaughter.
The courtyard winds blew cold across the ruined manor, carrying the sharp scent of burnt cedar and old blood.
Kaelen closed his left fist around the black-bronze token, his gaze turning toward the trembling elders gathered at the gate.
