Borin’s crew had lifted the flywheel shaft by the thickness of a coin and still could not make the bearing run true.
Iven arrived at the machinery room to find Tem reading a gauge while two workers held a timber lever beneath the housing. Borin watched the needle settle, then called for the lever to be lowered. The shaft returned to its former position with a soft metallic sound.
“The support moves,” Tem said. “The far end doesn’t.”
“Which means?” Borin asked.
“The near foundation has settled or the mounting plate has deformed.”
“Which of those?”
“We haven’t separated them.”
Borin saw Iven in the doorway. “You can watch. If you have an idea, tell me before you touch anything.”
