The signal relay delivered numbered short strips; Mara waited for the last acknowledgment before putting them in order.
Mara stood beside the brass terminal box in the office, watching the paper tape advance from the solenoid carriage. The needle had begun to drag on the paper, leaving thin, gray smears of graphite where the carbon ribbon was running dry. Tessa had re-inked the ribbon twice with kerosene and lampblack, but the mechanical tension springs were fatiguing under continuous use.
The tape read: CIVIC ASSEMBLY CONCLUDED. TWENTY-TWO VOTES CAST. UNANIMOUS REJECTION OF CUSTODIAL TRANSFER. WE WILL NOT TRADE REFUGEES FOR BOILER PARTS. ASHA AND MARISOL SIGNED.
Five minutes later, the secondary line from Pump Station Three rattled. RUTH REPORTING. IVAN AND NELL CONCUR. ARTHUR AND FINN CONCUR. WE DRINK FROM THE CULVERT BEFORE WE SIGN VENN’S BOOK. PUMP REJECTS SURRENDER.
Mara tore the paper strips from the brass guide and laid them on the common table in the lobby.
Candlewake’s residents were gathered with the four Civic daylight visitors. The night roster still held twenty-four; Elise, Miriam, Keisha and Ben had not surrendered their Civic beds. Owen would take them home before dusk. The air smelled of burnt chicory and the pine shavings Ellis Nouri was creating in the daylight workshop outside. Through the rear window, Mara could hear the rhythmic, scraping rasp of Ellis’s buck-saw biting into an ash log, with Noah beside him and a voluntary short task recorded while his independent hearing remained pending.
