The wind blowing south across the Ashen Barrens carried no scent of pine needles, river foam, or damp mountain loam. It smelled entirely of dry bitter salt dust, rotten-egg gravel, and the cold, stone residue of a thousand-year-old empire ground to powder.
At the crest of the dark rock ridge overlooking the sunken basin of Val-Khorat, the refugee column of five hundred souls came to a halt.
Behind them, five leagues to the north, the sky was a towering wall of churning black smoke shot through with sickly violet spark arcs. The proud spires of the Sovereign Grand Duchy were gone, toppled into the flooded foundation labyrinths where millions of tons of scalding stone runoff had drowned the lower districts. The ancient Cinder Gate—where Ren-the-Cinder had jammed the drop-gate winch with his desperate, screaming stand to crush the Alpha Giant statue—was sealed forever beneath eighty feet of collapsed granite stonework.
Ahead of them lay the vast, lonely expanse of the southern desert: a hundred and fifty miles of wind-scoured dark rock flats, dry ravines, and stone-hard cedar scrub stretching toward the distant scholarly oasis of Alexandria-Khorat.
Ren Vale stood upon a flat slab of shale, his boots caked with white bitter salt dust. He leaned heavily upon his walking staff.
