Judge-Captain Haddon’s crimson-lacquered plate armor clattered with heavy, rhythmic violence as he crossed the baked-clay floorplates.
Every joint of his harness had been oiled with rendered whale animal fat to silence the squeak of steel against leather. But the sheer physical mass of the man made the glass-fused tiles tremble. The four-foot metal tube of polished black lead in his hands thrummed with a low, oppressive hum that set the teeth on edge. It shook at a pitch that caused the pooling acid in the floor gutters to shiver in tiny nested rings.
It was an Acoustic Silence Rod, forged in the underground armories of the High court and consecrated under the Ninth Seal of the Grand Board. Wrapped in twenty-four spirals of consecrated silver wire, the weapon was not meant to bludgeon bone. It projected an invisible, high-pressure field designed to suppress vocal magic, drown sacred prayers, and paralyze human throat cords with nearby ringing frozen stillness.
Behind Haddon, nine crimson court guards fanned out into a disciplined semi-circle, their hardwood axe-spears leveled. Their boots splashed through puddles of boiling potash slurry.
“Kneel, keeper,” Haddon said, his voice flat, clockwork, and amplified through the brass grille of his breathing mask. “Open your mouth and receive the sovereign seal. You’ll speak no treason in the presence of the law. You’ll utter no names that have been expunged from the civic register.”
