The air beyond the threshold didn’t smell like air.
It smelled like tightly packed slate, dry friction, and ancient bronze gears turning inside a stuffy cellar.
Every square inch of the entryway was charged with a swaying magnetic drag that pulled at the moisture in Lin Ke’s throat. That made each breath feel like swallowing dry flour.
Across the vast entrance plaza, the scene was one of cold and exact total collapse.
Students with traditional, elastic spirit veins were buckling under the first two-air gravity wave.
A senior student from the Spirit Herb Hall was crawling on all fours, his fingernails clawing into the dark rock seams, his face purple as his dilated dark-blood channels struggled to push blood upward against the sudden downward gaining speed.
Behind him, two sword-fighters had already collapsed, blood leaking from their nostrils as their elastic vessels suffered acute high-pressure pooling.
Zhao Wuji took his first step toward the gate.
Even clad in his thousand-stone dragon-scale brigandine, the merchant heir’s movements were stiff, heavy, and visibly strained.
His teeth were bared, his neck muscles corded like hemp cables as his defensive barrier wards flared in rapid, flickering pulses, burning spirit stones at an alarming rate just to cushion his spine against the downward load.
Beside him, Yan Chuan advanced with a hunched, hungry stalk, his knees bent low, using his Qi Gathering 6 training to forcefully pump blood through his shaking channels.
Lin Ke didn’t rush.
He paused at the edge of the bronze threshold. He looked down at the carved runic demarcation line where the courtyard ended and the Pagoda’s internal array began.
Tianfu. Branch.
At double test model speed, Lin Ke stepped across the line in the mental sandbox.
The two-times downward vector slammed into his body.
In test model, Lin Ke monitored the tracking data across all two hundred and six nodes.
Node Status:
The Ashen Iron Lattice absorbed the downward gravity flux instantly.
The bones were thirty percent interstitial metal alloy. Because of that, their crushing yield limit was six hundred and eighty tons of pressure.
A two-times sky load was less than three percent of the skeleton’s rated load-bearing limit!
The moving load didn’t gather in his lower-back spine.
It bypassed his joints cleanly, flowing along the geometrically lined up Ashen Iron femurs and tibias, discharging straight through his calcaneus into the bedrock.
Spirit vein Status:
His congenital glass spirit veins (Bing-Mai) experienced zero volume warping.
Because the sight quartz-like walls were non-elastic and non-dilating, the air pressure slope couldn’t compress them.
The tightly packed soliton packets of Qi continued to pulse through his channels at standard signal speed, immune to the high-pressure pooling that was currently crippling traditional fighters!
And by matching his stepping rhythm to the array’s zero-crossing hum—stepping every zero-point-four seconds at the wave trough—the saw dynamic shear dropped by forty-one percent!
Lin Ke cut the mental branch.
He opened his physical eyes. Zero point two seconds had elapsed.
He reached down to his sash, checking the brass measuring tongs and his pocket ledger.
He turned slightly, catching Meng Shan and Shen Yue’s eyes.
Tap. Tap.
Two silent taps of his iron metal pen against the leather of his satchel.
Phase lock engaged.
Meng Shan stepped up to Lin Ke’s left shoulder, his broad quarry shield angled at thirty degrees. His distributed earth channels locked into the ringing zero-crossing hum.
To Lin Ke’s right, Shen Yue stepped in perfect all at once, her dual soul intent humming in quiet, asynchronous balance, fully sheltered from the air pressure behind the physical shielding of their formation.
Lin Ke planted his boots flat upon the demarcated threshold stone at the courtyard limit, right where the venting gravity flux roared past.
His stance remained fully upright.
His shoulders were square and relaxed. His breathing was slow, even, and smooth-flowing.
He didn’t grunt. He didn’t sweat. His skin showed zero tiny blood vessel flush under the two-air downward load.
To his left, Meng Shan angled his quarry shield at thirty degrees, grounding the sound deep ring cleanly through his heavy earth channels into the mountain bedrock. To his right, Shen Yue stood calm, her dual soul intent humming in quiet balance behind the physical shielding of their formation.
Behind them on the plaza, over five hundred gasping, groaning students stared in open-mouthed disbelief.
On the grandstand, Elder Wu DeZheng dropped his silk handkerchief over the stone railing.
The fat elder gripped the carved railing with both hands, his glasses sliding halfway down his nose.
“He’s... He isn’t buckling,” Wu whispered, his voice trembling across the silent elder gallery. “He’s standing in the vent stream like he’s waiting for afternoon tea.”
Ten paces ahead, Zhao Wuji dropped to one knee, the gold-trimmed dragon-scale brigandine groaning under the gravity slope.
Blood trickled from Zhao’s nostril as the merchant heir twisted around. It stared in cold horror at Lin Ke’s motionless, upright frame.
The four-story purchase... The market cornering... The price-fixing syndicates Lin Ke had shattered with eleven-stone essence iron...
All of Zhao’s gold and leverage had failed to bring this fire clerk to his knees.
CLANG-TONG!
High on the grandstand, Chief Presiding Elder Han struck the great deep ring gong, raising his black iron sleeve.
“Preliminary gate fine-tuning complete!” Elder Han’s voice rolled across the terrace like thunder. “Clear the outer edge! Array sealing engaged until formal deployment!”
With an ear-splitting underground groan of balance weights and greased chains, the huge bronze doors slowly swung back together, cutting off the vent stream with a heavy, shaking thud that rattled every tooth on the plaza.
THUD.
The two-air flux vanished. The mountain wind rushed back in, cold and thin.
Students collapsed in heaps across the flat stone slabs, panting, clutching bruised ribs and burst vessels.
Zhao Wuji pushed himself up with trembling limbs, his silk dueling gloves smeared with sweat and dirt.
A cold, poisonous sneer broke across Zhao’s face.
“Do you think surviving an array fine-tuning saves you, clerk?” Zhao rasped, his voice raw with bile. “The spot market was just foreplay. You humiliated my house before the guilds, but you forgot who writes the sect charters.”
From behind the grandstand, a senior courier from the Outer Sect Registry marched forward, escorted by two iron-masked punishment guards.
The courier didn’t look at the collapsed students. He strode straight to Lin Ke, unrolling a heavy bamboo metal tube bound with yellow silk and a thick red wax seal.
The wax reeked of rancid badger animal fat and stale copper.
“Backup Laborer Lin Ke of Smelting Ward Seven,” the courier intoned. His spiritual imprint flaring was warm as he shoved the bamboo parchment into Lin Ke’s hands. “You’re conscripted under Royal Wartime Rider Forty-Nine-C. Report to the central archway in one hundred and sixty-eight hours, or forfeit your mortal corpus to the melted rock waste quarries.”
On the reverse of the scroll, pressed deep into the coarse fiber, was a fresh red stone thumbprint bearing the crest of the Grand Fortune Clan.
Zhao Wuji stepped past, leaning close enough for his poisonous breath to brush Lin Ke’s ear.
“Seven days, Lin Ke,” Zhao whispered, his teeth bared in vicious triumph. “Enjoy your seven days in the soot. When those bronze gates open next week for the true check, there are no ledgers to balance. You’ll enter that dark, and every brittle shard of glass inside your body will be ground into dust.”
Lin Ke didn’t flinch.
He held the coarse parchment, feeling the sticky leftover heat of the wax against his palm.
He reached into his sleeve, withdrew his four-inch iron metal pen. Then he pressed the steel point into the calloused meat of his left thumb until a single droplet of dark crimson blood welled up.
Sharp. Solid. Real.
“Branch checked: main,” Lin Ke murmured into the cold mountain air.
He turned away from the sealed bronze gates and looked at Meng Shan and Shen Yue.
“One hundred and sixty-eight hours,” Lin Ke said, his tone dry as kiln ash. “Plenty of time to audit the intake.”
With the summons tucked beneath his sash beside his measuring tongs, Lin Ke turned down the winding stone stairs, leading his triad back toward the roaring fires of Ward Seven.
