Chapter 236: The Ancient Overlords' Surrender

The grand marble bridge of the central tribunal citadel descended through the violet vacuum, docking against the reinforced transuranic staging deck of Substation Kuiper-01 with a soft, trembling hiss of airlock seals.

Walking down the grand white marble ramp in solemn, funeral-like procession were the twelve Ancient Overlords of the Galactic Central Tribunal.

These were the ancient cosmic deities who had governed the lifecycle of galaxies for three evolutionary epochs. Their flowing robes were woven from the condensed dark matter of dead nebulas, embroidered with the sacred golden seals of supreme cosmic execution. In their hands, they carried twelve colossal, glowing obsidian scythes—the *Blades of Universal Erasure*—each capable of severing the karmic ties of ten thousand star systems in a single stroke.

At the head of the procession walked Grand Archon Yuan Shi and Chief Justice Gu Ming.

Their eyes, which had remained cold and unyielding while sentencing hundreds of civilizations to the void, were wide, bloodshot, and hollow with absolute existential exhaustion.

Before them stretched five thousand towering star-jade box-cribbing stacks holding up the entire Perseus Spiral Arm. Behind the cribbing towers, three million former soldiers in neon-yellow vests torqued bolts and checked laser levels. Nearby, former High Inquisitor Tian Luo whistled a cheerful tune, wiping dark grease off a hydraulic jack with a shop rag.

Standing at the base of the marble ramp, his boots planted firmly upon the steel deck under one hundred and ten Gs of localized surface gravity, was Austin.

Across his lower back, eighteen hundred pounds of certified lead ballast hummed with monolithic stability, holding his ten-Earth-mass Kerr-Newman core in immovable equilibrium. The ASME Section VIII code nameplate on his spine caught the pale starlight. In his left hand, Austin held an aluminum clipboard clipped with **FORM RE-100: REHABILITATIVE APPRENTICESHIP ENROLLMENT & CODE COMPLIANCE AGREEMENT**. In his right hand, he held a box of fresh, sharpened No. 2 yellow grease pencils.

Beside Austin sat Pug, perched upon his insulated wool blanket.

Pug wore his official Chief Quality Assurance Inspector vest, his miniature yellow hard hat, and his clear safety goggles. Between his paws lay his mirror-polished platinum regulation tennis ball, gleaming cold and immaculate.

Grand Archon Yuan Shi and Chief Justice Gu Ming reached the bottom of the ramp.

With slow, trembling movements, the two supreme deities knelt on both knees. They laid their obsidian executioner scythes flat upon the steel deckplates, pressing their foreheads against the cold metal at Austin’s boots.

"Supreme Architect of the Unyielding Foundation," Yuan Shi whispered, his voice cracking with utter, broken defeat. "We have witnessed the folly of our ancient decrees. We proclaimed this universe condemned, yet you have braced the collapsing heavens upon nine-tier towers of mortal jade. We surrender our ancient authority. We offer our divine souls to be crushed within your Kerr-Newman core. Strip our immortal cultivation bases, cast our names into the book of oblivion, and let our ashes be scattered across the void."

Austin looked down at the twelve kneeling cosmic deities, then at the twelve obsidian scythes lying on the deck.

He let out a slow, tired breath, shaking his head with mild tradesman exasperation.

"Why does everyone think the solution to a code violation is soul execution?" Austin muttered, tapping his grease pencil against the clipboard. "Do you have any idea how much administrative waste is involved in executing twelve skilled administrators? The severance paperwork alone takes six months. And what do I do with twelve piles of immortal ash? It’s a hazardous particulate disposal violation under Clean Air Code Section Fourteen."

Yuan Shi and Gu Ming froze, their foreheads still pressed against the steel.

Gu Ming slowly raised his head, his face pale and bewildered. "You... you do not intend to execute us, Master Foreman?"

"Execution doesn't pour concrete," Austin replied flatly. "Execution doesn't grease hydraulic cylinders. And it certainly doesn't help us finish the universal underpinning before the Big Crunch reaches maximum compression. I don't need your souls, Archon. I need your labor."

Austin slid twelve copies of Form RE-100 across the deck with the toe of his steel-toed work boot.

"This is the standard Municipal Public Works Rehabilitative Apprenticeship Agreement," Austin explained, pointing with his grease pencil. "Under Section Twenty-Four of the Labor Code, you avoided criminal asset seizure for illegal teardowns. Instead, all twelve Ancient Overlords are remanded to Local Four-Zero-Four. You start a mandatory four-year certified apprenticeship in Heavy Rigging and Maintenance."

The twelve Ancient Overlords stared at the stapled yellow documents as if they were written in an alien tongue.

"An... apprenticeship?" Yuan Shi repeated faintly, his voice trembling. "We... who have judged galaxies... are to become apprentices?"

"First-year apprentices," Austin corrected firmly. "You start at seventy percent of journeyman scale, with full medical and dental benefits through the Ceres union hall. You work forty hours a week, with time-and-a-half for Saturday overtime. You will learn how to read structural blueprints, how to torque flanged connections in a cross-pattern, and how to operate pneumatic lubrication equipment without blowing out the dust seals."

Austin turned to Arch-Dominus Wu Ji and Tian Luo.

"Wu Ji, Tian Luo. Issue the PPE."

"YES, MASTER FOREMAN!" Wu Ji and Tian Luo barked in unison.

Wu Ji and Tian Luo stepped forward, carrying twelve heavy wooden crates.

They handed out twelve sets of standard field gear from the crates. Each set had heavy canvas work pants, steel-toed boots, and neon safety vests. They topped it off with white hard hats marked with green apprentice decals, and pneumatic grease guns loaded with fresh grease cartridges.

Austin looked at Grand Archon Yuan Shi.

"Take off those dark-matter robes," Austin instructed. "They're a snag hazard. If you get those flowing sleeves caught in a winch drum or a cable capstan, you’ll be pulled into the rollers before the emergency stop line can trip. Put on the canvas dungarees and strap your hard hat under your chin."

Yuan Shi, the supreme lord of the Galactic Central Tribunal, slowly stood up.

With trembling, reverent hands, he unfastened his magnificent dark-matter robes of universal judgment, letting them fall to the deck. He stepped into the heavy blue canvas dungarees, pulling the suspenders over his shoulders. He laced up his steel-toed boots, strapped the yellow safety vest tight across his chest, and placed the white fiberglass hard hat firmly upon his head, clicking the chin strap shut: *click*.

Chief Justice Gu Ming and the ten remaining Overlords followed suit without a single word of complaint.

Within ten minutes, the twelve supreme judges of the cosmos had been completely transformed into a squad of clean, code-compliant first-year apprentice riggers.

Austin nodded with professional approval.

"Now for your job assignments," Austin said, consulting his clipboard. "Grand Archon Yuan Shi, you are assigned to Cribbing Cluster Twelve. You will take that grease gun and grease every trunnion bearing on the fifty-ton hydraulic recovery cylinders until clean grease purges from the relief seal. Chief Justice Gu Ming, you will take a four-foot torque wrench and verify the torque on all four hundred Crosby wire-rope clips along the Orion tieback cable. If I find a single dead horse saddled, your entire squad gets twenty hours of remedial rigging school on Saturday morning. Clear?"

"CLEAR, MASTER FOREMAN!" Yuan Shi and Gu Ming shouted together, slamming their fists over their safety vests.

Pug trotted over across the steel deckplates, his little yellow hard hat gleaming under the floodlights.

Pug waddled up to Grand Archon Yuan Shi’s steel-toed boots. He sat down on his haunches, tilted his head, and gave Yuan Shi’s newly laced work boots three slow, analytical sniffs: *sniff-sniff-sniff*.

Pug reached up, tapping the steel toe cap with his right front paw: *tap*.

Then, Pug looked up at the former supreme deity of the universe.

His stubby tail gave two crisp, approving wags.

*"WOOF!"*

Grand Archon Yuan Shi let out a long, shuddering gasp of pure, overwhelming relief. Tears of profound spiritual awakening spilled from his ancient eyes, soaking into the collar of his neon-yellow safety vest.

"The Sacred Canine of Quality Assurance has approved my boot laces..." Yuan Shi wept softly, bowing deeply to the pug. "I shall not fail you, Master Inspector. I shall grease every trunnion with the purest devotion of my soul!"

He grabbed his pneumatic grease gun, turned on his heel, and marched toward Cribbing Cluster Twelve with the determined stride of a man who had finally found true purpose in the universe.

A translucent system notification flashed across Austin’s retinal display:

Austin watched the twelve former deities march off to the shoring lines, each carrying their grease guns with sacred care.

Tie Kuang walked up beside Austin, a broad, fanged grin splitting his copper-scaled face.

"Boss," Tie Kuang chuckled, shaking his head. "You just took the supreme judges of the universe and turned them into first-year grease monkeys."

"Not grease monkeys, Tie Kuang," Austin replied calmly, picking up his five-foot titanium-tungsten pipe wrench and resting it across his right shoulder. "Journeyman candidates. Give a man an executioner’s blade, and he’ll destroy worlds for ten million years. Give him a grease gun and eighty foot-pounds of torque, and he’ll keep a machine running forever."

He looked toward the main header manifold of the Perseus fault.

"Now that we've got the extra hands," Austin said, turning toward the work staging area, "let's finish Act Two. We’ve got Chapter Two Hundred and Thirty-Seven to complete: installing the high-pressure relief manifold before the core reaches maximum compression."
