Chapter 235: The Great Universal Underpinning

The six-thousand-mile front of the Perseus compression fault had survived the initial impact of the trillion-zettawatt tsunami, but the massive dead load of the collapsing galaxy remained unrelenting.

Ten thousand five-hundred-ton hydraulic cylinders were currently holding sixty-eight thousand pounds per square inch of fluid pressure against the underside of the galactic overhang. The four-inch braided stainless steel lines were rigid as iron bars, sweating cold synthetic condensation in the vacuum as the electric pump skids struggled to maintain equilibrium against the inward gravitational drag.

Austin stood on the transuranic rock shelf, holding his aluminum clipboard.

Across his lower back, eighteen hundred pounds of certified lead ballast held his ten-Earth-mass core in immovable monolithic balance under one hundred and ten Gs of localized surface gravity. In his right hand, he carried a twenty-pound forged steel framing maul with a knurled hickory handle.

Beside Austin stood Tie Kuang, Arch-Dominus Wu Ji, and former High Inquisitor Tian Luo, all wearing their white hard hats with green safety stars.

"Tie Kuang, explain the hazard of relying on hydraulic pressure for permanent shoring," Austin commanded, tapping his No. 2 yellow grease pencil against **FORM UP-600: STRUCTURAL CRIBBING & PERMANENT UNDERPINNING TRANSFER LOG**.

Tie Kuang straightened his spine, reciting the cardinal rule of foundation underpinning with absolute clarity:

"You never, under any circumstances, leave a structure resting on hydraulic jacks as permanent support, Boss. Hydraulic seals can experience thermal creep. Synthetic elastomeric O-rings can blow out under continuous sixty-thousand-PSI load. Relief valves can seat off-center from micro-particulate contamination. If a single primary manifold blows a seal while carrying fifty million tons of load, the entire shoring wall will suffer progressive collapse in less than half a second."

"Exactly," Austin nodded firmly. "Hydraulics are for lifting, leveling, and temporary holding while you work. Mechanical cribbing is for permanent structural load support. You take the weight off the cylinders and transfer it onto solid timber cribbing blocks. Bring in the star-jade timbers."

Wu Ji turned toward the transport fleet, raising his right hand and dropping it in a sharp, crisp military signal:

"PHASE TWO CRIBBING CORPS, ADVANCE!"

From the cargo holds of eighty massive transport barges, three million workers of the Deep-Void Pipeline Maintenance Corps mobilized in disciplined, synchronized squads of fifty.

They did not carry flying swords, spatial talismans, or void-cracking siege cannons. They carried ten million tons of heavy, rectangular structural cribbing timbers, each twelve feet long, two feet wide, and two feet thick, forged from sintered transuranic star-jade and dense Martian titanium alloy. Each timber featured precision-machined interlocking mortise-and-tenon alignment dowels to prevent lateral racking under eccentric seismic loads.

Working beneath the towering shadow of the six-thousand-mile celestial overhang, the workers began stacking the cribbing timbers in alternating, cross-hatched square towers—the classic, ancient two-by-two cribbing box pattern.

Two timbers laid east-to-west.

Two timbers laid north-to-south.

Layer by layer, the cribbing towers rose beneath the foundation grade beams of the Perseus Spiral Arm. The star-jade alloy possessed a compressive yield strength of two point eight times ten to the eighteenth pascals—capable of supporting the dead weight of three complete star systems per square foot without experiencing plastic deformation.

Austin walked along the baseline, inspecting each cribbing stack with his laser level and framing maul.

He stopped at Cribbing Tower Forty-Two, where Tian Luo and four former Astral Arbiters were carefully positioning the top bearing timbers beneath a primary spliced girder.

"Check your bearing surface, Tian Luo," Austin instructed, pointing with the handle of his maul. "The top timbers must make full, uniform contact with the steel flange of the foundation beam. If you have an air gap of even a sixteenth of an inch, the load will concentrate on the point of contact, crushing the grain of the alloy and inducing localized shear failure."

Tian Luo knelt, sliding a set of hardened steel feeler gauges between the star-jade timber and the beam flange.

"Point zero four inch gap on the northeast corner, Master Foreman!" Tian Luo reported with crisp, tradesman diligence. "The foundation beam has a slight mill camber from the cooling process."

"Install the brass shim pack," Austin ordered. "Beveled shims driven from opposing sides so the bearing plane stays dead-level. Never use single shims on a heavy load point; they'll walk right out under vibration."

Tian Luo pulled two heavy, wedge-shaped brass shims from his leather pouch. He inserted them into the gap from opposite directions, holding them aligned with his gloved fingers.

Austin stepped forward with his twenty-pound framing maul.

He swung the maul with a smooth, effortless sweep of his shoulders, letting the eighteen-hundred-pound ballast frame provide the unyielding kinetic mass:

*CLINK. CLINK. THUNK.*

The hardened steel head of the maul struck the brass shims, driving them home until the tone of the metal shifted from a ringing chime to a dull, dense, monolithic thud that indicated solid refusal.

Austin wiped a fleck of metal dust off the beam with his thumb, checking the alignment with a magnetic spirit level.

"Solid bearing," Austin noted, nodding in approval. "Zero play. Full load transfer path established across the entire flange."

Tian Luo stared at the nine-tiered star-jade cribbing stack, his eyes shining with profound, religious wonder.

"The Nine-Tier Pagoda of Cosmic Equilibrium..." Tian Luo whispered, clutching his chest with both hands. "An ancient technique used by mortal carpenters to support wooden barn roofs... now elevated to hold the falling vault of the galaxy! It is so simple... so lawful... so unyielding!"

"It's just standard heavy-duty box cribbing, Tian Luo," Austin said dryly. "If it works to support a four-hundred-ton steam locomotive in a railroad repair shop, it'll work to support a galactic spiral arm. The laws of mechanics don't change just because you added a few more zeros to the scale. A compressive column is a compressive column."

Within twelve hours, five thousand towering star-jade cribbing stacks stood fully erected along the six-thousand-mile Perseus fault, interlocking directly beneath the main structural grade beams.

Austin walked back to the central hydraulic control console, where Tie Kuang, Wu Ji, and Xuan Ming were standing by the master manifold. Five regional monitoring stations along the line reported synchronized fluid temperatures and zero pressure leakage across all ten thousand cylinders.

Beside the console, Pug sat on his vibration pad, his platinum tennis ball resting between his front paws, his little yellow hard hat tilted forward over his brow.

"All right," Austin said, pulling out **FORM UP-600** and clicking his No. 2 grease pencil. "All five thousand cribbing towers are inspected, shimmed, and verified for full bearing contact. We are ready to transfer the universal dead load from the hydraulic jacks to the mechanical cribbing."

Tie Kuang gripped the master hydraulic pressure bypass valve wheel with both clawed hands.

"Ready on your command, Boss."

"Pug," Austin said, looking down. "Auxiliary bypass monitor."

*"BARK!"*

Pug lifted his front paw, resting it lightly on the auxiliary pilot valve lever.

"Open the bypass valve slowly," Austin commanded. "Five hundred PSI per minute. Let the jacks settle onto the cribbing with zero dynamic shock."

Tie Kuang began to turn the heavy brass wheel:

*CREEEEEAAAK.*

High-pressure synthetic ester fluid began to bleed back into the central reservoir through the throttling orifices.

Across the six-thousand-mile front, the pressure in the ten thousand hydraulic cylinders began to drop in smooth, controlled increments:

"Sixty-five thousand PSI... sixty thousand PSI... fifty thousand PSI... thirty thousand PSI..."

The chrome-plated piston rods retracted by a fraction of an inch.

*THUD.*

A massive, subterranean tremor vibrated through the transuranic bedrock shelf as the immense, multi-quintillion-ton dead load of the Perseus Spiral Arm settled downward onto the five thousand star-jade cribbing stacks!

The star-jade timbers groaned beneath the colossal weight.

The brass shim packs compressed by three-thousandths of an inch.

And then, the structure locked.

The solid mechanical cribbing took the load with absolute, unyielding rigidity. The hydraulic pressure in the cylinders dropped to zero, their pistons hanging loose in their guides, while the five thousand cross-hatched cribbing towers carried the entire weight of the galactic fault on their shoulders!

A golden, full-screen system notification flared across Austin’s retinal display:

DEV CONSOLE
STANDALONE HOST
[UNDERPINNING TRANSFER COMPLETE: LOAD LOCKED]
Shoring Transfer: Hydraulic -> Permanent Mechanical Cribbing
Total Dead Load Supported: 8.50 x 10^19 Metric Tons
Cribbing Structure: 5,000 Nine-Tier Star-Jade Box Stacks

Hydraulic Cylinder Status: OFFLINE / ZERO PRESSURE
Subsidence Rate: 0.0000 km/s/Mpc [PERMANENT MECHANICAL LOCK]
Foundation Status: PERMANENTLY UNDERPINNED & SECURE

Austin pulled out his digital caliper, measuring the vertical deflection of the central cribbing stack against the datum mark.

"Deflection: zero point zero zero four inches," Austin announced, his voice ringing with deep, professional pride. "Right on the engineering calculations. The cribbing is carrying the full dead load with a safety factor of four point five."

He signed the final turnover block on Form UP-600: *PERMANENT UNDERPINNING COMPLETE — SHORING SECURED*.

Across the six-thousand-mile front, three million workers of the Deep-Void Pipeline Maintenance Corps erupted into a roaring, earth-shaking cheer that echoed through the comms of every star system in the sector.

Arch-Dominus Wu Ji threw his arms around Tie Kuang, while High Inquisitor Tian Luo wept openly, holding his torque wrench toward the stars in solemn salutation.

Pug trotted over to the base of Cribbing Stack One, his little tail wagging at fifty beats per minute. He gave the bottom star-jade timber three analytical sniffs: *sniff-sniff-sniff*.

Pug tapped the wood with his right front paw: *tap*.

He looked up at Austin, letting out a loud, joyful bark:

*"WOOF!"*

Austin smiled, reaching down to give Pug a long, affectionate scratch behind his little hard hat.

"Good dog, Pug," Austin murmured softly. "The foundation is locked. The jacks can rest."

He looked out toward the distant, burning Galactic Core, where the remaining shockwaves of the inward collapse were swirling into an even tighter, more desperate vortex.

"Act Two is moving fast," Austin said, slinging his five-foot pipe wrench back over his shoulder. "The foundation is underpinned. Now let's go meet the Ancient Overlords who thought they could condemn this galaxy."
