Felix Vance worked himself to death testing video games. His second life comes with a mountain cottage, a rude clockwork owl, and a device that makes him stronger while he sleeps. He considers this a generous apology. Then the academy puts his cottage up for auction. Saving it should be simple—unfortunately, Felix has sheltered a wanted heiress, damaged the only bridge, and discovered that the people downstairs need his supposedly worthless island to remain upstairs. As their repair job grows into a journey through rigged tournaments, feuding clans, pirate ports, and failing cities, Felix learns what happened to his missing master. Someone has to keep their world running, and the rulers have spent centuries making that everybody else's problem. They have a vacancy at the top. Felix would rather invent a better kettle. He may have to invent a better Heaven first.
