The Grand Arena of the Second Spire was packed to the absolute brim.
Fifty thousand spectators filled the floating marble tiers, their voices merging into a roar that shook the clouds. Cultivators from across the eastern heavens leaned over carved railings, waving banners and clutching scrying crystals to record every second of the spectacle.
Down in the center of the ring, Felix Vance sat on a cracked stone bench, fighting a desperate battle against a massive yawn.
He rubbed his eyes with two lazy knuckles, letting out a breath that ruffled his messy brown bangs. He wore his usual faded gray hemp tunic and a pair of frayed straw slippers that had seen better days three months ago.
"Man, this tournament lobby has terrible matchmaking," Felix muttered to himself.
He rested his brass-cased obsidian slate against his knees, his thumb tapping the screen with practiced, rhythmic apathy.
Felix gave a soft groan when he read the fine print.
He didn't care about the tournament trophy, the grand championship title, or the praise of fifty thousand shouting strangers. The only reason he had walked down from the Seventh Spire was that stupid fifty-day login streak bonus. If he skipped the final match, the system would reset his counter to day one, and he would lose out on the free high-tier gacha roll.
"Just one more round," Felix grumbled, scratching his ribs. "Then I can go home and take my afternoon nap."
Ten paces to his left, Lyra Ashford stood with her arms crossed over her polished silver breastplate. Her posture was razor-sharp, her hand resting lightly on the pommel of her slender rapier.
Her golden eyes swept the roaring crowd with pure, unyielding disdain.
"Look at these blind fools," Lyra murmured, her voice carrying a quiet chill. "They scream and cheer like children at a county fair, completely unaware that they are breathing the same air as an ancient cosmic entity."
She turned her gaze toward Felix, her expression softening into profound, religious awe.
To the ignorant masses, Senior Brother appeared to be a tired youth slouching in cheap peasant cloth. But Lyra knew the truth. Every sluggish blink of his heavy eyelids was a profound calculation of celestial laws; every casual scratch of his ribs was a deliberate stabilization of the world's gravitational balance.
"Senior Brother," Lyra whispered, stepping closer and lowering her head in deep reverence. "The previous three contenders threw themselves from the ring the instant they stepped into your domain. The weight of your slumbering presence crushed their spirit veins before their blades could even clear their scabbards."
"Yeah, their connection must have dropped," Felix said without looking up from his screen. "Terrible server ping today. The lag in this arena is unbelievable."
Lyra’s breath caught in her throat.
*Lag... ping...* she repeated the sacred words in her mind, her heart fluttering with renewed awe. *He speaks of the primordial latency between mortal thought and universal reality! To him, the distance between intent and execution is but a fleeting delay in the grand wheel of creation!*
Up in the high VIP pavilion, Grand Chancellor Zhao and Arch-Inquisitor Valen were not cheering.
They were sweating so profusely that their silk sleeves were soaked clean through.
Grand Chancellor Zhao gripped the polished jade balustrade with knuckles so white they looked like bleached bone. His golden imperial robes clung damply to his trembling shoulders.
"Valen," Zhao whispered, his voice trembling like a dry leaf in a gale. "Tell me the defensive array is holding. Tell me the mountain's containment wards have been doubled."
"Chancellor, we have funneled eighty percent of the academy's spirit reservoirs into the ring's barrier runes," Valen replied, his neat goatee twitching with nervous tension. "Every runic pillar is glowing white-hot. If Lord Vance releases even a fraction of the gravitational force he demonstrated on the Seventh Spire, the Second Spire will snap from its chains and fall into the void."
"May the ancestors preserve us," Zhao muttered, frantically dabbing his brow with a silk handkerchief. "Why did the Crown Prince have to intervene today of all days?"
Before Valen could answer, the sky above the Grand Arena split open.
A golden rift tore through the high clouds, accompanied by the deafening fanfare of seventy-two astral war-horns. The sound rattled the teeth of fifty thousand spectators, drowning out their cheers with a majestic, thundering chord.
A colossal flying barge emerged from the rift, forged entirely from radiant solar brass and trimmed in pure fire-jade.
Nine majestic golden sun-drakes, their scales blazing with liquid crimson fire, pulled the vessel through the heavens. Their wings beat in unison, sending waves of shimmering heat rolling across the floating tiers. The temperature in the arena spiked instantly, turning the cool mountain breeze into a sweltering desert wind.
"Behold!" the arena announcer shrieked through an amplified brass horn. "He has arrived from the High Sun Capital! The First Scion of the Solar Lineage, the Peerless Blade of the East, Crown Prince Raymond!"
Fifty thousand voices erupted into a deafening chant.
*"PRINCE RAYMOND! THE RISING SUN! THE UNDEFEATED BLADE!"*
A single figure leapt from the prow of the golden barge, descending toward the arena floor like a falling star.
He didn't plummet; he floated downward on a pillar of swirling crimson flames, landing with absolute grace in the center of the sand. When his golden sabatons touched the flagstones, a circle of molten fire rippled outward, scorching the white chalk boundary lines into blackened charcoal.
Crown Prince Raymond stood tall and proud, bathed in the blinding brilliance of his own aura.
He wore magnificent golden solar plate armor etched with soaring phoenixes and roaring dragons. A long crimson cape billowed behind him, untouched by wind, carried solely by the intense thermal updraft radiating from his spiritual veins.
His features were sharp, regal, and dripping with unbearable arrogance.
At his hip hung an ancient, curved weapon inside a sheath of dragon-bone: the *Nine-Sun Imperial Dragon Saber*. The hilt alone radiated a crimson glow so intense that the air around it shimmered with heat mirages.
Felix glanced up from his screen for half a second.
A set of dark, translucent brackets flickered over Raymond's glowing head:
【Target: Crown Prince Raymond】 【Cultivation: Astral Knight Tier 4 (Peak) / Solar Affinity】 【Threat Level: Loud Cinematic Boss (Unskippable)】 【Inspector Note: Wears entirely too much shiny metal in direct sunlight. Has practiced his victory monologue in front of a mirror for at least three hours. If ignored, his ego may implode.】
Felix rubbed the bridge of his nose and let out a tired sigh.
"Great," he muttered. "It's an unskippable cutscene. Where's the skip button when you actually need one?"
Crown Prince Raymond drew his weapon.
*SHING!*
The sound was like a ringing church bell forged from pure brass.
As the curved blade slid from its dragon-bone scabbard, nine miniature spheres of swirling crimson fire erupted along the spine of the saber. The divine heat was terrifying. Even behind the reinforced spirit barriers, front-row spectators covered their faces and gasped for breath as the arena sand began to fuse into glistening red beads of glass.
Raymond pointed the glowing tip of his saber straight at Felix's nose.
"You must be the impudent hermit who dares occupy Solitude Spire," Raymond bellowed, his voice ringing with imperial authority that commanded total silence across the stadium. "I have heard the ridiculous rumors spread by weak-willed cowards!
They claim you command the primordial heavens! They claim you crushed an Ashford battlefleet with a single breath!"
Raymond sneered, his lip curling in utter disdain.
"Nonsense! Charlatanry!
Pure fabrication!" Raymond shouted, his crimson cape snapping in his personal heat storm. "You are nothing more than an untalented mortal squatter who stumbled upon an ancient spatial concealment relic!
You use smoke and mirrors to deceive fools, but before the true divine fire of the High Sun Empire, all illusions are burned to ash!"
The crowd went wild, cheering for the prince's righteous declaration.
Lyra took half a step forward, her hand tightening on her rapier. Her eyes blazed with fury at the prince's blasphemous words.
"Ignorant insect," Lyra called out, her voice cutting through the cheers with razor-sharp clarity. "You brandish a spark of mortal fire before the living incarnation of the cosmos!
Sheathe your toy and kneel while you still have breath in your lungs, Raymond! You have no conception of the abyss you are provoking!"
Raymond threw his head back and laughed, a booming, haughty sound that echoed off the high stone arches.
"Silence, traitorous Ashford wench!" Raymond roared back. "When I have turned your so-called master into a pile of smoking grease, you shall face imperial judgment for your clan's cowardice!"
Raymond turned his blazing amber eyes back toward Felix, his saber igniting with an even brighter solar fury.
"Step forward, Felix Vance!" Raymond challenged, raising his weapon high above his head. "Draw your blade!
Channel your spiritual core! Let the fifty thousand witnesses of the eastern skies see whether your void tricks can survive the divine wrath of my Nine-Sun Dragon Saber!"
Down on his bench, Felix tapped the screen of his AetherDeck one last time, saving his progress in *Pocket Star Sandbox*.
He slid the heavy brass slate into his loose hemp sleeve, stood up, and stretched his arms toward the sky. His spine made three loud, distinct popping sounds.
"Man, my back is stiff," Felix groaned, shaking his legs out.
He shuffled forward in his frayed straw slippers, his feet dragging through the hot sand with a dry, scraping rhythm. He stopped five paces from the prince, hands tucked deep into his sleeves, his eyes half-closed in mild boredom.
The blinding glare of Raymond's solar flames reflected directly into Felix's tired eyes, forcing him to squint.
"Hey, pal," Felix said, his voice flat, casual, and utterly unimpressed. "Could you tone down the flashbangs? I've got a killer headache, and your RGB lighting is giving me serious eye strain."
Crown Prince Raymond’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth squeaked.
The fifty thousand spectators held their breath, absolute silence falling over the Grand Arena like a heavy shroud.
In the VIP box, Grand Chancellor Zhao squeezed his eyes shut and began whispering a desperate prayer to the academy's founding ancestors.
Raymond raised the Nine-Sun Dragon Saber to the heavens, the nine fire orbs merging into a blinding corona of pure, white-hot destruction.
"Die in the light of the sun, charlatan!" the prince roared.
Felix merely blinked, his left foot sliding forward half an inch into the sand. He checked his internal stamina bar, gave a soft sigh, and prepared to get this annoying cutscene over with.
