Chapter 017: Felix’s Daily Fence Quest

Morning on Solitude Spire arrived without permission.

High in the eastern skybox, the golden sun of Aethelgard breached the cloud bank, painting the weather-beaten cedar shingles of the cottage in warm amber light.

On the ceiling beam inside the cottage, Barnaby the clockwork owl gave a violent shudder.

*Click-whirrrr-clack.*

His polished brass gears spun at maximum torque.

His amber crystal retinas flared with urgent morning zeal.

His beak snapped open, desperate to blast the room with his scheduled 6:00 AM imperial wake-up decree.

Unfortunately for Barnaby, the black rubber stopper remained hammered flush into his copper beak.

Instead of an inspiring martial sermon, the little automaton produced only a muffled, rhythmic thrumming sound:

*"Mmph-mmph-grrrrr-thump."*

On the wooden bed five feet away, Felix Vance didn't even flinch.

Buried under two down quilts and a heavy wool blanket, Felix lay completely motionless, sleeping with the serene, unyielding density of a dead star.

It was 10:45 AM.

A good, respectable hour for an active idle gamer.

Slowly, Felix’s eyes cracked open.

He stared at the exposed cedar ceiling rafters for three peaceful minutes, waiting for his mental operating system to finish loading.

In his chest, the miniature 1.0-Earth-Mass stellar core hummed with steady, rhythmic perfection.

It felt like a cozy, purring cat curled behind his ribs, radiating gentle warmth into his marrow and keeping his passive health regeneration pegged at maximum.

Felix rolled out of bed, slipped his feet into his worn straw slippers, and stretched his arms toward the ceiling.

*Crack-pop.*

"Another morning, another mountain of passive gains," Felix muttered, shuffling across the uneven pine floorboards toward the kitchen.

As he entered, the fragrant scent of roasted barley and sizzling eggs filled the room.

Lyra Ashford stood by the black cast-iron stove.

She was already dressed in her crisp, silver-trimmed tunic, her long hair tied neatly back, and her rapier resting within arm's reach against the counter.

When Felix walked in, she immediately dropped into a sharp, respectful bow.

"Good morning, Eldest Senior Brother!" Lyra announced, her voice filled with solemn discipline. "I have secured the perimeter. The courier dove that attempted to circle the eastern ridge at dawn was intercepted and redirected toward the void."

Felix paused mid-stride, squinting at her through sleep-crusted eyes.

"You... threw a rock at a bird?" Felix asked slowly.

"I launched a compressed wind-blade to shatter its navigational trajectory," Lyra corrected with deadpan aristocratic pride. "No foul fowl shall compromise Senior Brother's state of profound meditation."

Felix rubbed his temples with a quiet sigh.

"Right," Felix mumbled. "Good job on the bird defense, kid. Remind me to turn your aggro radius down later."

He pulled out a chair and sat down at the pine dining table.

Underneath the table's front right leg, the multi-million-year-old *Sovereign Heart Seal* of the Nine Heavens gleamed faintly in the morning light.

Its nine roaring dragon carvings were wedged firmly beneath the splintered wood, perfectly counteracting the floor's three-degree slope.

Felix rested his forearms on the table. It didn't wobble by a millimeter.

"Still the best table shim on the continent," Felix remarked in satisfaction.

Lyra’s breath hitched in her throat as she set down a plate of fried eggs and a steaming mug of jasmine tea.

Every time she looked at that divine imperial relic holding up sixty pounds of pine furniture and breakfast plates, her sanity took a minor critical hit.

*The ancestral seal of twelve dynasties...* Lyra thought, her fingers trembling slightly as she poured the tea. *Used as a wedge to prevent his egg yolks from sliding off the edge. His contempt for mortal power is beyond mortal comprehension.*

Felix took a bite of an egg, chewed thoughtfully, and reached into his wide sleeve.

He pulled out the AetherDeck.

The dark obsidian slate rested comfortably in his palms. Its brass bezel was cool, and the four directional rockers felt satisfyingly tactile.

Felix tapped the central power rune.

The screen lit up with a cheerful retro chime, displaying a bright flashing banner:

Felix frowned at the screen, taking a sip of his hot jasmine tea.

"Garden fences?" Felix grumbled. "Seriously? Why do idle games always turn into landscaping simulators the second you hit mid-game?"

He tapped `[ACCEPT QUEST]` anyway.

He didn't care much about the 250 coins, but that *Rare Star-Marrow Fertilizer* caught his eye.

The Sun-Lotus Cabbage in his front yard had been glowing with an absurdly bright golden aura ever since his core ignited, and Felix was curious to see if feeding it premium fertilizer would speed up its harvest cycle.

"Alright," Felix said, setting his empty tea mug down with a clatter. "Time to do my daily chores before the server reset."

Lyra’s eyes instantly sharpened.

She stood at attention, her hand flying to the hilt of her rapier.

"Senior Brother speaks of the 'daily reset'?" Lyra asked in a hushed, reverent whisper. "Does the firmament shift its cosmic alignment at this hour? What divine undertaking must you perform?"

"I have to build three fences," Felix said plainly, sliding his chair back. "Otherwise the rabbits will eat my vegetables and my daily completion bonus gets bricked."

He walked out the front door in his straw slippers.

Lyra remained frozen for two seconds, her mind racing at warp speed.

*Fences?!* she thought, panic flaring behind her aristocratic composure. *He speaks of the Heavenly Boundary! He intends to lay down defensive formations! The Blade Spire sent Prince Kenneth on his white griffon yesterday to scout our borders—Senior Brother already knows an invasion is imminent!*

Lyra dashed out onto the porch, eager to witness the divine ritual.

Outside, the air was warm and still.

In the center of the untamed yard, the single Sun-Lotus Cabbage sat in its patch of dark soil.

Its broad jade leaves radiated a soft, pulsing golden glow, resembling an emerald bowl holding a miniature sun.

Near the overgrown stone wall of the cottage sat a neglected pile of grey cobblestones.

They had been lying there for decades, discarded by Grandmaster Vivienne when she tore down an old toolshed three years ago.

Felix strolled over to the pile, hands tucked into his sleeves, his slippers dragging through the dry grass.

He looked at the grey stones.

His Inspector HUD flickered into life:

【Item: Discarded Primordial Star-Iron Runestones】 【Grade: Ninth-Tier Ancient Earth Seals】 【Durability: Infinite】 【Inspector Note: Dense, weather-worn stones infused with the heavy tectonic weight of the First Firmament. Left behind by your master because she thought they were too heavy to carry to the dumpster. Excellent for stacking.】

"Good enough," Felix muttered. "They're roughly rectangular. Saves me having to cut wood."

He bent down, picked up three heavy grey stones, and carried them over to the northern edge of the cabbage bed.

To an ordinary mortal, each stone weighed nearly four hundred pounds.

Even a Tier 3 Spellblade would have needed to circulate liquid mana through both arms just to lift one off the turf.

Felix, however, didn't notice.

With a 1.0-Earth-Mass stellar core rotating in his dantian, lifting four hundred pounds felt roughly equivalent to picking up a sponge.

He dropped the first three stones in a neat, straight line along the dirt.

*Thump. Thump. Thump.*

"One fence," Felix counted.

He walked back to the pile, grabbed four more stones, and stacked them into a knee-high dry-stone wall along the eastern edge of the patch.

*Clack. Thud.*

"Two fences."

He grabbed the final three stones and placed them on the southern border, tapping the top stone with the heel of his hand to ensure it was level.

*Thump.*

"Three fences. Done."

Felix dusted the grey grit from his palms onto his apron.

Inside his brain, the AetherDeck gave a cheerful, high-pitched *DING*:

"Sweet," Felix said, smiling in relief. "Fastest three-minute daily quest ever. No fetch quest, no escort mission. Devs actually did something right."

What Felix didn't realize, however, was what his hands had just done.

When Felix touched those nine Primordial Star-Iron Runestones, the massive gravitational flux of his stellar core had involuntarily surged through his fingertips.

The dormant runic matrices within the ancient stones—silent for ten thousand years—suddenly caught fire with planetary resonance.

The moment the final stone struck the earth, the geometric alignment snapped into place.

*THUUUUUUUUUUUUUUM.*

The sound didn't travel through the air; it traveled through the marrow of the floating island itself.

Deep beneath the cabbage patch, ten thousand feet through the solid granite and mithril bedrock of Solitude Spire, nine colossal golden roots of primordial earth-force erupted downward like liquid lightning.

They plunged through the cloud sea.

They bored straight into the invisible magnetic mantle of the planetary crust below.

The entire four-mile-wide floating island shuddered once—a deep, resonant metallic lock that felt like a vault door slamming shut on the horizon.

A pale, translucent amber dome of geometric force flickered across the sky for a fraction of a second, sealing the atmosphere from bedrock to stratosphere, before melting into invisible reality.

The legendary *Primordial Earth-Lock Array* of the Ancient Titans had just awakened.

From this moment on, Solitude Spire was no longer merely floating.

It was an immovable cosmic anchor.

Even if an Imperial dreadnought fired its heavy void-cannons at point-blank range, the kinetic force would simply disperse harmlessly into the tectonic plates of the world.

Standing on the porch steps, Lyra Ashford had fallen completely to her knees.

Her knuckles were white as she gripped the wooden railing.

Her breath came in ragged, terrified gasps.

Her eyes were locked on the nine ordinary cobblestones surrounding the cabbage bed.

*The... the Earth-Lock Array...* Lyra screamed inside her skull, her mind spinning into sheer, ecstatic delirium. *The lost defensive formation of the Earth Titans! He didn't use runic ink! He didn't chant incantations! He didn't sacrifice celestial beasts!*

She watched Felix casually bend down, open a paper packet of shimmering golden fertilizer, and sprinkle it over the cabbage leaves like table salt.

*He casually picked up nine pieces of titan-bedrock... and anchored this entire sky-island to the foundation of the world!* Lyra wept internally, clutching her chest.

*Prince Kenneth is flying toward this peak with his Heaven-Slicing Rapier, believing he can shake Solitude Spire... but Senior Brother has already made this mountain immovable! He built an impregnable titan fortress... and disguised it as a garden fence!*

Felix finished dusting the cabbage, balled up the empty paper packet, and tossed it into the wooden trash bin by the porch steps.

"There," Felix said, admiring his handiwork. "Now the rabbits can't ruin my crop while I'm AFK."

He turned back toward the porch, catching sight of Lyra kneeling on the cedar floorboards, trembling like an autumn leaf.

Felix stopped and blinked at her.

"You okay, kid?" Felix asked, tilting his head. "Did you pull a muscle throwing rocks at that bird earlier?"

Lyra quickly bowed her head until her nose almost touched the wood.

"This disciple is... overwhelmed by Senior Brother’s boundless foresight!" Lyra choked out, her voice quivering with devotion. "Your preparation for the coming storm is beyond mortal reckoning!"

Felix stared at her for three silent seconds, then rubbed the back of his neck.

"It was literally three stones, Lyra," Felix sighed, stepping up onto the porch. "It took two minutes. You really need to stop overreacting to basic housekeeping."

He walked past her, intending to head back to his hammock for an uninterrupted afternoon nap.

Suddenly, a loud, piercing screech of wind tore through the upper atmosphere.

Above the southern cloud line, a magnificent beast broke through the mist.

It was a white wind-griffon with razor-sharp silver talons and a wingspan of forty yards, descending toward Solitude Spire with the speed of a falling arrow.

Riding atop the beast sat a young man clad in shimmering silver plate armor, his sapphire cape billowing dramatically against the azure sky.

Felix paused at the doorway, looking up with a tired, long-suffering groan.

"Great," Felix muttered, his shoulders sagging in defeat. "Just when I finished my dailies, the game spawns an unskippable mini-boss."
