Chapter 132: Floor 1: The Conveyor Belt Gauntlet

When the reinforced steel blast doors of Floor 1 slid shut behind the Grand Crusader Alliance with a concussive, airtight *THOOM*, the thousand holy warriors immediately dropped into defensive battle formations.

The hydraulic locks engaged like an iron coffin. Three inches of synthetic neoprene compressed against solid granite jambs, cutting off retreat. In an instant, the sacred sunlight of the mortal world was replaced by subterranean isolation.

Shieldbearers of the Iron Zen Monastery locked their massive bronze bucklers, forming an overlapping wall of polished metal. Sword cultivators of the Nine Heavens Frost Pavilion drew their rapiers, coating the floor in sparkling rime. At the center stood Patriarch Guang Ming, his Solar Godblade drawn and humming with pure celestial vigilance.

"Maintain the Sun-Shield Formation!" Guang Ming commanded, his voice vibrating with taut authority. "We have crossed into the First Circle of the Nether-Abyss! Ancient scrolls warn that subterranean fortresses are choked with soul-draining miasmas, barbed pit traps, and phantom flesh-flayers seeking to devour our spiritual marrow!"

Grand Abbot Wu Nian gripped his heavy khakkhara staff with white knuckles, brass rings jingling. "Every breath must be purified with inner qi! Chant the Diamond Heart Cleansing Sutra!"

The thousand crusaders advanced down the thirty-foot-wide arched tunnel with agonizing caution, testing the floor for pressure plates and concealed triggers.

Yet, after fifty paces, zero clouds of poison gas drifted from the walls. There were no severed limbs dangling from stalactites and no screaming bone flutes echoing in the dark.

Instead, the ambient air was brisk, smelling faintly of vulcanized rubber, turbine grease, and freshly crushed basalt. Overhead, continuous twin rows of flush-mounted 12-volt LED strip lighting bathed the corridor in crisp, shadowless 5000K illumination.

Along the smooth concrete wall ran an impeccably routed four-inch rigid PVC conduit carrying high-voltage electrical lines. It was held against the masonry by heavy galvanized steel unistrut channels, anchored by expansion bolts driven at uniform intervals of exactly seventy-two inches.

Abbot Wu Nian paused, examining the silver mounting brackets.

"Observe the wall, Brother Guang Ming," Wu Nian whispered. "These silver talismans... fastened at exact six-foot intervals. The measure of a mortal grave! It is the Hexagram of Earthly Binding! The demon lord has chained the elemental earth dragons to the stone with metallic hex-pins!"

"A sinister geometry indeed," Guang Ming murmured gravely. "Advance with extreme vigilance!"

At the terminus of the tunnel, the archway expanded into a colossal processing hall spanning four football fields in length.

The thousand-man crusade froze in stunned bewilderment.

Stretching across the cavern was a dizzying, multi-tiered network of four-foot-wide reinforced rubber conveyor belts running at twenty-five miles per hour. Powered by sealed electric induction motors humming at sixty hertz, the heavy belts whirred with relentless mechanical perfection.

Towering over the belts were massive, cylindrical vibrating trammel screens—twenty-foot-long rotating cages of perforated steel mesh that tumbled raw mountain rock, separating jagged gravel from fine mineral dust with a thunderous *CHUG-CHUG-CHUG-RATTLE*.

Diverter chutes fed crushed stone into secondary hoppers. Overhead catwalks fabricated from galvanized grip-strut grating crisscrossed the chamber, lit by amber safety beacons flashing with unhurried indifference.

Directly above the primary conveyor junction hung a heavy enameled steel warning placard in safety yellow:

DEV CONSOLE
STANDALONE HOST
[CAUTION: MOVING MACHINERY & NIP-POINTS]
Keep hands, clothing, and celestial beards away from rollers!
Emergency Stop Pull-Cords located along catwalk railings.
DO NOT RIDE CONVEYOR BELTS. VIOLATORS WILL BE DISCHARGED.

Patriarch Guang Ming squinted at the sign, parsing the baffling script of the First Epoch.

"'Moving Machinery and Nip-Points'..." Guang Ming repeated, his voice hushed with dread. "The demon's words carry ancient curses! Look at those spinning perforated cylinders! Those are the legendary **Soul-Grinding Trammels of the Nine Netherworlds**! They are designed to crush our divine dantians into spiritual dust!"

"And the black rivers of moving leather!" Grand Abbot Wu Nian gasped, staring down at the rubber belts whipping past below. "It is the **Current of Samsara**! If a mortal foot touches that black surface, one's soul shall be dragged into the infinite cycle of rebirth and ground beneath the rollers of destiny!"

"Wait!" Guang Ming raised a hand, his eyes blazing with tactical insight. "Look closely at the Current of Samsara! Look at the central sorting junction!"

At the convergence point of Conveyor Belt Beta, several oversized granite boulders—each weighing three to four hundred pounds—had lodged against a heavy steel diverter baffle. The rocks had jammed tight, causing raw ore to back up along the belt. The vulcanized rubber groaned under friction, emitting wisps of white smoke as the belt slid uselessly beneath the blockage.

"The Demon Lord tests our righteousness!" Guang Ming declared. "Those jagged celestial boulders are core curse-nodes placed to disrupt the balance of the formation! The demon dares us to leap into the Current of Samsara, brave the grinding rollers, and shatter the bottlenecks! Vanguard Commander Zhao Ba, step forward!"

Commander Zhao Ba, still nursing a dull ache in his tailbone from his earlier encounter with the entrance turnstile, felt a surge of warrior's pride.

"Patriarch! Allow me to take the vanguard!" Zhao Ba roared, his heavy iron armor clanking. "I shall sever the demon's curse-node with my bare hands!"

"Go forth, righteous warrior! For the glory of the Radiant Sun!"

"For the Radiant Sun!"

Zhao Ba leaped from the catwalk, his peak Golden Core cultivation propelling him downward. His boots, shod in three-ton enchanted iron greaves, aimed directly for Conveyor Belt Beta.

The moment Zhao Ba’s boots hit the rubber belt traveling at twenty-five miles per hour, terrestrial physics asserted absolute dominion over spiritual cultivation.

*SKRRRRRRRRRT!*

Zhao Ba’s center of mass failed to accelerate with the rushing belt. The high-traction textured rubber ripped his iron boots forward from under his knees with violent speed.

*WHAM!*

His heavy breastplate slammed flat against the speeding rubber with a concussive crunch. Before he could draw breath to channel his qi, the vanguard commander went skittering backward down the conveyor line on his stomach like an upturned steel turtle thrown across ice.

"Brother Zhao!" shrieked fifty paladins from the catwalk.

"Fear not! I am establishing a defensive posture!" Zhao Ba bellowed, frantically drawing his twin high-grade spirit daggers and stabbing them downward to anchor himself.

*THWACK-THWACK!*

The hardened steel daggers struck the multi-ply synthetic rubber, bouncing harmlessly off internal steel cords. The blades failed to pierce even a millimeter, merely leaving two light scuff marks.

"Curses! The leather of Samsara is impervious to spirit blades!" Zhao Ba yelled, spinning helplessly as the belt carried him directly toward the primary sorting hopper.

Directly in his path sat the three-hundred-pound granite boulder jammed against the diverter chute.

With no time to roll aside, Zhao Ba’s armored rear end slammed into the jagged rock with the force of a runaway battering ram.

*CRRRRR-ACK!*

The massive boulder shattered violently under the kinetic impact of Zhao Ba’s reinforced iron armor, exploding into uniform four-inch gravel chunks.

Instantly, the bottleneck cleared.

Automated mechanical flow resumed with seamless perfection. Tons of crushed ore poured smoothly down the chute into the vibrating trammel screen with a satisfying *CHUG-CHUG-CHUG*.

At the exact same instant, an automated limit switch engaged. A pneumatic diverter arm swung outward with a sharp hiss of compressed air:

*PFFFT-SWOOSH!*

The padded steel paddle caught Zhao Ba under his armpits, scooping him off the speeding belt and flipping him sideways through an open safety hatch.

*FLUMP.*

Zhao Ba landed squarely in an eight-foot-deep collection hopper filled with soft pine woodchips, installed beneath the chute to catch sorted wood debris. He sat up in the cedar shavings, completely uninjured, blinking in dazed bewilderment as woodchips showered down upon his helmet.

High above on the catwalk, Patriarch Guang Ming watched with wide, trembling eyes, before clutching his Solar Godblade as tears of enlightenment spilled down his cheeks.

"Did you see that?!" Guang Ming shouted, his voice cracking with religious ecstasy. "The demon boulder was a curse-node throttling the sacred circulation! Commander Zhao sacrificed his martial vanity! He laid his body flat upon the Current of Samsara, allowed the river of destiny to carry him, and shattered the demonic obstruction with the pure, righteous weight of his iron core!"

Abbot Wu Nian stared at the trammel screen, which was now spinning freely, humming with rhythmic joy.

"The Soul-Grinder sings with liberation!" Wu Nian bellowed, raising his brass-ringed staff high. "The Current of Samsara has been cleared of sin! Monks of the Iron Zen! Disciples of the Nine Heavens! Leap into the river! Pulverize the clogging stones! Purge the bottlenecks of the First Circle!"

"Purge the bottlenecks!" roared three hundred monks.

"Cleanse the Current of Samsara!" screamed two hundred sword cultivators.

In a wave of righteous fervor, five hundred armored cultivators vaulted over the catwalk railings, descending upon the conveyor network in a flurry of fluttering robes and flashing spirit blades.

What followed over the next twenty minutes was the single most breathtaking, synchronized, and completely unintended industrial maintenance blitz in the history of the realm.

Cultivators tumbled, skidded, and rolled along the twenty-five-mile-per-hour belts, executing acrobatic backflips and sword sweeps to stay upright. Whenever an oversized lump of basalt threatened to jam a diverter gate, four Iron Zen monks would dive forward simultaneously, unleashing "Demon-Shattering Iron Palms" and flying dropkicks to pulverize the boulders into uniform aggregate gravel.

Sword masters flicked their rapiers with razor precision, slicing stray roots and clay clods into mulch before they could choke the sorting screens. Disciples used the fluttering hems of their silk robes to wipe down the rubber belt tracks, while elders channeled their inner fire to vaporize accumulated mud along the idler rollers.

By the time the conveyor network reached the discharge terminal at the far end of the cavern, all twelve sorting chutes were operating at maximum theoretical throughput. Zero pebbles remained jammed in the roller bearings; the primary trammel screens gleamed like polished mirrors.

One by one, five hundred bruised, soot-streaked, woodchip-covered crusaders tumbled out of the terminal discharge chutes, landing in the pine chip catch-basins before scrambling to their feet with glowing, triumphant smiles.

Patriarch Guang Ming brushed wood shavings from his golden mantle, leaning on his blade and panting heavily, his heart swelling with pride:

"We have conquered the First Circle! Every demonic trial node has been crushed! The Current of Samsara flows without hindrance! Onward, righteous warriors! To the Second Circle of the Nether-Abyss!"

"Huzzah!" roared the crusaders, marching in disciplined ranks toward the concrete stairwell leading down to Floor 2.

High above the cavern floor, perched on a narrow inspection catwalk tucked into the ceiling trusses, Austin leaned his elbows on the steel safety railing.

Tucked under his arm was a weathered aluminum clipboard holding a stack of maintenance schedules. In his right hand was a warm, steaming solar-roasted egg, which he peeled with practiced thumb-flicks, popping a buttery piece of golden yolk into his mouth.

Beside him stood Tie Kuang. The dwarven master artificer was staring down at the spotless conveyor hall, his mechanical tally counter clicking rapidly in his trembling fingers. His jaw hung open so wide his braided red beard nearly touched the deck.

"Master Austin..." Tie Kuang croaked, his voice squeaking with disbelief. "Ore sorting throughput across all twelve lines just registered at ninety-eight point four percent. The entire six-month gravel and basalt backlog... over four thousand tons of raw mountain rubble... cleared and sorted in twenty-two minutes flat."

Austin took another bite of his egg, chewing thoughtfully as he watched Commander Zhao Ba climb out of the woodchip bin and brush cedar flakes off his breastplate.

"Not bad," Austin said, nodding in mild approval. "Their footwork is terrible—zero appreciation for static friction coefficients—and that dive onto Belt Beta could have caused a belt-tracking misalignment if the tensioner wasn't rated for heavy shock loads. But you can't knock their hustle."

Tie Kuang swallowed hard, glancing at the ledger in his hands. "Master Austin, they paid four hundred and fifty thousand spirit stones at the gate just to enter this mountain."

"Yep," Austin said, pulling a yellow grease pencil from his hard hat harness and making a crisp checkmark on his maintenance log. "They paid full ticket price, brought their own PPE, cleared our biggest production backlog without filing a single union grievance, and they're currently marching down to the heavy foundry with huge smiles on their faces."

Austin dusted off his leather work gloves and turned toward the spiral stairwell.

"Radio Floor Two. Tell Jiang Taixu to warm up the 50-ton hydraulic forging press and get the slag dump-carts in position. Our volunteer second-shift cleaning crew is already on their way."
