Rook’s first example involved two gates on opposite sides of the river.
The nearer gate had been closed after a routine operation. Several hours later, a monitoring station at the second site recorded a rise in current. No breach followed, and the reading returned toward its earlier range by the next morning.
Eli wrote the dates and times in his notebook. “Were both stations using the same equipment?”
“I don’t know whether the sensors shared components. The reports were collected through the same regional system.”
“Did the second site have a baseline?”
“Three days of readings before the closure.”
“Were there other gates active nearby?”
“Yes. The report lists two. Neither was closed during that interval.”
