At one hundred thousand feet above the mortal world, twilight arrived without dusk.

Because there was no dense blanket of tropospheric air to scatter the dying rays into evening haze, the sun did not bleed into soft pink and orange before vanishing. It simply slid beneath the razor-sharp, sapphire curvature of the planet like a molten gold coin slipping into an iron slot, plunging the cosmic void into instantaneous, crystalline velvet darkness.

And then, as if an invisible master electrician had thrown a single primary knife-switch across the face of the world, the earth below ignited.

From the Eastern Sea to the Western Deserts, thirty massive webs of glowing amber and brilliant white light flared into the darkness. Five thousand cities, ten thousand towns, and countless millions of rural cooperative villages shone like interconnected constellations across the continents.

The night had been conquered. The sixty-hertz pure sine wave hummed from the northern steppes to the southern jade shores, an unbroken current of exawatt stability binding five mortal empires into a single, unified electrical civilization.

Sitting on an exterior teak wood bench on the summit terrace of the Skyway, ninety-nine thousand nine hundred and fifty feet above sea level, was Austin.

He was wearing his broken-in denim work jacket over his white pressurized suit, his Shade-14 welding goggles pushed up onto the brim of his yellow hard hat. In his left hand was a tin lunchbox filled with thick slices of smoked beef jerky and a mason jar of preserved solar peaches, and in his right was his stainless steel thermos of steaming black tea.

Leaning heavily against his knees was eight-hundred-pound Cerberus Pug.

The three-headed hound wore a custom-fitted high-altitude thermal fleece vest in bright forest green, his three velvety black ears poking through custom-trimmed slots in three yellow hard hats. Pug gave a deep, rumbling sigh that vibrated Austin’s kneecaps.

Austin reached into his lunchbox, pulled out a preserved solar peach with a wooden fork, and fed it to Pug’s left head. The head caught the fruit with a joyful snap, savoring the concentrated 32-Brix sweetness. He fed a thick strip of smoked jerky to the right head, which chewed with rhythmic, blissful canine contentment before giving Austin’s steel-toed work boot a sloppy, affectionate lick. And the center head remained happily clamped around an eight-foot strip of vulcanized conveyor belting, treating the thousand-pound tensile rubber like a sacred, stratospheric teething ring.

"Good boy," Austin murmured, reaching down to scratch all three heads behind their hard hat straps. "Best high-altitude security dog in the game. Zero lost-time incidents on your watch."

A soft, pneumatic hiss signaled the opening of the terrace airlock.

Stepping out onto the diamond-plate deck came three figures, their boots clicking in unison against the steel.

Superintendent Tie Kuang, Sword Patriarch Jiang Taixu, and Chief Cable Inspector Xuan Ming—former Supreme Grand Inquisitor of the Upper Void Realm, now proudly sporting his white supervisor’s hard hat with its gleaming yellow Monthly Safety Champion star.

All three men wore Class 3 fall-arrest harnesses over their neon-orange vests, their dual lanyards clipped into the perimeter safety cables with textbook precision.

In Tie Kuang’s massive gauntleted hands was a leather-bound master manifest, its corners reinforced with polished brass rivets.

"Master Chu," Tie Kuang spoke through the local radio channel, his voice choked with deep, reverent emotion. "The final commissioning survey of Season Seven is complete. We present the Master Log of the Stratospheric Skyway."

Tie Kuang knelt on one knee, holding the leather manifest upward with both hands.

Austin took the book, opening the heavy parchment pages.

Inside, inscribed in flawless mechanical drafting calligraphy, was the complete structural summary of the greatest engineering endeavor in continental history:

Austin read through every line, his thumb tracing the zero-accident metric at the bottom.

Beside Tie Kuang, Xuan Ming stepped forward, holding a polished cedar presentation box lined with blue velvet.

"Master Chu," Xuan Ming said, his voice trembling with quiet pride. "The thirty thousand cable-riggers of the Void Maintenance Division have prepared a humble token of our eternal devotion."

He opened the box.

Inside rested a three-inch cross-section slice of the primary twelve-inch titanium-carbon elevator cable. The individual wire strands had been ground flush and polished to a mirror shine, etched with microscopic acid-relief lines showing the crystalline metallurgy of the alloy. Mounted below the metal disc was a small brass placard:

`TO MASTER CHU YUAN: THE MASTER OF PLUMB` `WHO TAUGHT THE VOID HOW TO TIE OFF` `100,000 FEET OF INTEGRITY / ZERO DEFECTS`

Austin picked up the commemorative cable slice. He squinted at it through his Shade-14 goggles, running his thumbnail across the perimeter.

"Slight saw chatter on the rear bevel," Austin noted automatically, pulling out his basting file before pausing, looking at Xuan Ming’s eager, hopeful eyes, and putting the file back into his pocket. He gave a rare, genuine smile. "Good metallurgical polish. Nice edge break on the rim. Thanks, Xuan Ming. I’ll keep it on my drafting desk."

Xuan Ming beamed, standing as tall and proud as if he had just been crowned Sovereign of the Nine Heavens.

"For forty thousand years, Master Chu, we sought the Dao in the clouds of arrogance," Xuan Ming whispered softly, looking out across the twinkling lights of the world below. "We thought immortality was achieved by stepping upon the weak and severing ourselves from the dust. But here, suspended upon thirty kilometers of honest titanium, we have learned that the highest cultivation is not to escape the world... but to build the bridge that lifts it to the stars."

Jiang Taixu smiled beneath his gold visor, resting two fingers upon his sword hilt. "The Sword of Preparation has found its true sheath. Heaven and earth are joined in iron and stone."

Inside Austin’s gut, the twin stars hummed in smooth, rock-solid rhythm.

Sol-Alpha and Sol-Beta were locked together like a glowing peanut, spinning at eight hundred and fifty revolutions per minute. Massive waves of pure golden fire rolled through both stars in a clean, endless figure-eight loop. The bad shaking had completely stopped. The engine had settled into a steady, warm purr that felt like an old truck idling smooth on high-grade fuel.

Around Austin’s waist, the heavy lead weights and oil shock absorbers held his gravity in sweet balance. Six loose zinc washers and a curled wooden pencil shaving floated around his leather toolbelt, lazily circling him like tiny golden moons caught in a friendly orbit.

Pug trotted over from the railing, his three heads panting happily in the crisp night air. His center head carried an empty copper grease gun, his left head held a frayed work glove, and his right head nudged Austin's knee with a wet, black snout. Austin reached down and scratched the three heads between their velvet ears.

"Good job, boy," Austin murmured. "The tower is up. The bolts are torqued down. Nobody fell off, and the elevator runs on schedule."

Suddenly, Austin’s eyes caught a soft, warm chime right across his field of view.

The system console expanded into a full panoramic holographic interface, framing the starlit cosmos above his head in crisp, electric gold.

Austin pulled his yellow grease pencil from behind his ear. On the blank back page of the Master Dossier, he began rapidly sketching the preliminary geometric cross-sections of an orbital ring.

"A geosynchronous ring at twenty-two thousand miles," Austin murmured to himself, his pencil flying across the paper. "Anchored by twelve carbon-nanotube elevator tethers spaced at thirty-degree intervals around the equator. Twelve thousand solar collector mirrors feeding exawatts into a continuous magnetic levitation track. We can manufacture the structural members directly in orbit using the nickel-iron asteroid belt."

He looked up through his Shade-14 goggles into the deep, endless black of orbital space.

High above the 100,000-foot summit spar, the thirty converted Void Dreadnoughts rested peacefully in their parking orbits, their orange position markers blinking like friendly lighthouses in the dark. Beyond them lay the vast, untapped asteroid belts, rich with billions of tons of high-grade nickel, iron, platinum, and titanium, drifting through the cold vacuum, waiting for an industrial modular constructor to claim them.

Austin took a slow, deep sip of hot tea from his thermos, capping the insulated lid with a crisp, metallic twist.

He reached down and gave Pug’s center head a firm, affectionate pat on the skull.

Pug gave a sleepy *woof*, nestled his three chins against Austin’s steel-toed work boots, and resumed his stratospheric nap.

Austin leaned back against the teak bench, looking out at the illuminated curve of the earth below and the boundless frontier of the cosmos above.

"Well, boy," Austin smiled softly into the starlit silence of low orbit. "We built the elevator. We turned on the lights."

He tapped the side of his five-foot cast-titanium pipe wrench.

"Tomorrow morning... we start building the ring around the planet."
