In interplanetary customs and border enforcement, there were three traditional, textbook methods of interdicting contraband vessels in deep space: high-powered magnetic tractor snares, boarding torpedoes, and long-range beam interception.

Austin, having evaluated the capital expenditure, power draw, and maintenance overhead of all three, had chosen a far more economical, low-maintenance solution: an eight-hundred-pound three-headed Cerberus Pug living in a pressurized titanium observation dome on the surface of Ceres, equipped with four pneumatic tennis-ball cannons and an automated dried-bacon distribution hopper.

The *Canine Orbital Defense Module Alpha-02* was currently bolted securely to the highest mountain peak of Dwarf Planet 1 Ceres, overlooking the primary high-voltage star-jade cable switching yard.

Austin had spent three full days designing the module's life-support and environmental controls to the highest commercial specifications. When dealing with an eight-hundred-pound three-headed dog in a low-gravity environment, human engineering manuals were largely useless. You had to calculate the Coriolis accelerations inside the spinning sixty-foot rotating drum so that when Pug chased his tail, the outward spin didn't make his left head dizzy while his right head was trying to eat. The drum was spun at twenty-four revolutions per minute by a low-friction brushless electric motor, producing a comfortable, earth-normal one-point-zero-G gravity field along the curved floor.

The deck was lined with charcoal-gray, waterproof closed-cell EVA foam padding that was impervious to claw punctures. In the center sat an oversized, circular orthopedic memory-foam dog bed upholstered in fire-retardant shearling wool, equipped with internal electric resistance heating elements set to a cozy seventy-two degrees Fahrenheit. The air filtration system utilized medical-grade HEPA scrubbers, potassium permanganate chemical canisters, and triple-stage activated charcoal beds—specifically engineered to neutralize the intense, concentrated odors of thick-cut spiritual bacon and three-headed canine snores.

Resting his three massive, wrinkled black heads upon the padded leather sill of the quartz observation cupola sat Pug.

He was wearing his custom-tailored, multi-layer pressurized Nomex space suit, each head encased in its own transparent polycarbonate bubble helmet fitted with anti-fog heating elements and two-way audio comms. Pinned proudly to his chest harness was an oversized, polished brass shield stamped with black industrial block letters: `CHIEF INTERPLANETARY CARGO INSPECTOR: PUG`.

"Snort," his left head remarked through the comms, watching a cloud of cold-gas thruster plumes drift across the Ceres horizon.

"Aroo," his center head agreed, gnawing happily on his regulation solid-platinum tennis ball.

His right head was entirely focused on the green tactical radar console mounted at eye level beside the window.

Two hundred thousand miles out, trailing in the wake of Arch-Dominus Wu Ji’s paralyzed dreadnoughts, four Concordat stealth pinnaces were attempting to slip past the Ceres checkpoint under cover of radar silence.

The pinnaces were sleek, knife-shaped interceptor skiffs, forged from black abyssal mirror-crystal that absorbed radar, light, and spiritual sense. Their hulls were coated with dark-matter cloaking talismans, gliding silently through the void on cold-gas reaction thrusters. Their mission, handed down directly by Wu Ji's tactical council, was to sever the eight-inch star-jade cable at the Ceres terminal junction, plunging the entire asteroid mining complex into electrical darkness and stranding the mortal forces in deep space.

Aboard the lead Concordat stealth pinnace *Shadow Claw*, Lieutenant Kai of the Concordat Shadow Infiltration Corps was squinting through his scrying crystal.

"The primitives have no comprehension of deep-space cloaking runes," Kai sneered into his encrypted comm bead. "Our shadow-crystal hulls have bypassed the defenses of thirty sovereign empires. We are three minutes from the star-jade junction. But... what is that structure upon the Ceres mountain peak?"

His copilot zoomed the crystal optics onto the sixty-foot titanium dome.

"It... it appears to be an observation sanctum," the copilot reported, his antennae twitching in confusion. "There is... an entity inside the viewing port. A three-headed celestial beast wearing white armor and a gold breastplate."

"A beast?" Kai laughed coldly. "A mere mortal pet! Ignore the creature! Prepare the spatial plasma cutting lances!"

To human eyes and ordinary electronic radar, the four stealth pinnaces were completely invisible against the blackness of space.

To Pug’s right head, however, the skiffs smelled distinctly of ozone, unburned dark-matter bunker fuel, and suspicious delivery couriers who had crossed a marked property boundary without ringing the front bell or presenting a package manifest.

Pug’s six ears perked up inside his three polycarbonate bubbles. His three heads cocked sideways in synchronized canine suspicion.

Beneath his heavy front paws, three oversized, red-enameled industrial foot pedals were mounted to the foam-padded floor:

DEV CONSOLE
STANDALONE HOST
CERES CHECKPOINT TACTICAL CONSOLE: MODULE ALPHA-02
Left Pedal: DISPENSE DRIED SPIRIT BACON (Operational)
Center Pedal: ENGAGE HIGH-SPEED BACK-SCRATCHER (Standby)
Right Pedal: 4-GUN PNEUMATIC TENNIS BALL VOLLEY (PRIMED)
Pneumatic Pressure: 4,500 PSI High-Pressure Nitrogen
Projectiles: 10-lb Sintered Tungsten Regulation Balls
Muzzle Velocity: 680 Feet Per Second (Mach 0.60 in Vacuo)
Target Status: 4 Unauthorized Stealth Pinnaces Locked
Threat Assessment: CABLE SABOTAGE ATTEMPT (UNPERMITTED)

Pug didn't hesitate for a microsecond.

*STOMP.*

His heavy right paw slammed down onto the red fire pedal with the force of an eight-hundred-pound pile driver.

*THWUMP-THWUMP-THWUMP-THWUMP.*

Outside the module, four heavy pneumatic barrels flared with brilliant puffs of white nitrogen gas. Four regulation-size, high-visibility yellow tennis balls—each custom-sintered with an ultra-dense, ten-pound solid tungsten core—shot out into the hard vacuum of space at six hundred and eighty feet per second.

In the frictionless vacuum of the asteroid belt, where air resistance did not exist to bleed off kinetic energy, four ten-pound spheres of solid tungsten flew along laser-guided ballistic vectors with terrifying, relentless momentum.

*KRA-CLACK.*

A bright yellow tennis ball traveling at Mach zero point six punched cleanly through the forward shadow-crystal canopy of the *Shadow Claw*, obliterated the navigation console, passed through the primary dark-matter fuel manifold, and exited through the stern thruster bell, leaving a neat, four-inch entry and exit hole venting emerald fuel into the void.

*CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!*

Three more tungsten tennis balls struck the remaining pinnaces in rapid, devastating succession.

The dense tungsten cores smashed through spatial guidance arrays, shattered crystal cockpits, and sheared reaction control thrusters, leaving all four Concordat stealth skiffs spinning drunkenly through the void like struck bowling pins.

Inside the module, Pug watched the four crippled skiffs tumble helplessly through his cupola, let out a deep, chest-rattling *WOOF-WOOF-BARK* that caused the audio limiters on the solar system comms network to clip violently, and stomped his left paw down onto the bacon pedal.

*CLINK.*

A twelve-inch slab of smoked, thick-cut spiritual bacon dropped into his stainless-steel food bowl. All three of Pug's tails thumped against the shearling bed in rhythmic, blissful satisfaction.

A moment later, Xuan Ming and a boarding party of forty void inquisitors swept out from the Ceres maintenance hangar aboard three electric utility tugs. Wearing pristine white hard hats and orange safety vests, they lassoed the tumbling Concordat skiffs with high-tensile magnetic tow lines, killed their leaking fuel lines, and hauled them into the primary impound dock.

Xuan Ming kicked open the warped hatch of the *Shadow Claw*, looking down at the dazed, bruised Concordat pilot with an expression of stern, regulatory judgment.

"Name and registration!" Xuan Ming barked, brandishing his aluminum clipboard.

"I... I am Lieutenant Kai of the Concordat Shadow Infiltration Corps..." the pilot groaned, clutching his bruised ribs. "What... what manner of celestial weapon struck our craft?! Was it the Shattering Void Star-Orb of the Primal Sovereign?!"

"It was a regulation ten-pound tungsten tennis ball fired by Chief Cargo Inspector Pug," Xuan Ming declared crisply, slapping an orange citation form onto the pilot's shattered instrument panel. "You are hereby cited for attempting unauthorized access to an active high-voltage utility junction, failure to yield right of way to an official inspection post, and reckless operation of an unpermitted motor vehicle in an asteroid safety envelope!"

Xuan Ming tossed a pair of heavy leather work gloves and a galvanized steel dustpan into the pilot's lap.

"Now get out of that cockpit and report to Track Delta. You have thirty thousand tons of crushed gravel to rake along the Ceres rail siding before the afternoon freight arrives."

The pilot blinked through his swollen eyes, looking down at the dustpan, then out the window at the distant, peaceful mountain where the giant three-headed pug was happily chewing bacon in his heated glass dome.

"A... a dustpan?" the pilot whispered in broken despair.

"Yes, a dustpan," Xuan Ming said, adjusting his white supervisor hard hat. "And make sure your chin strap is buckled. Chief Inspector Pug does not tolerate safety non-compliance in his sector."

A few minutes later, Austin arrived at the Ceres checkpoint aboard an electric utility rover, carrying a fresh twenty-five-pound canvas sack of hickory-smoked spiritual bacon jerky and an analog nitrogen pressure gauge.

Stepping through the airlock into Pug's module with a heavy metallic clunk of his magnetic boots, Austin hooked the gauge to the pneumatic cannon reservoir.

"Four hundred PSI drop across four shots," Austin noted, nodding approvingly. "One hundred PSI per ball. That's well within the regulator's tank recovery curve."

He pulled four fresh ten-pound sintered tungsten tennis balls from a wooden crate, slid them one by one into the pneumatic breech loader with a brass push rod, and clamped the breach latch shut.

*Click-clack.*

Austin walked over to the giant shearling bed, dropping the sack of bacon jerky into the stainless-steel hopper and giving all three of Pug's wrinkled black chins a thorough, vigorous scratching.

"Good shooting, buddy," Austin said softly as Pug let out a deep, rumbling, three-throated purr that vibrated the titanium deck. "Clean center-mass hits. No collateral damage to the high-voltage busway."

He looked through the quartz window down toward the rail yard, where Lieutenant Kai and the three Concordat pilots were awkwardly holding their dustpans, staring in bewilderment at the vast mountains of asteroid gravel.

"People always ask me why we use tungsten tennis balls instead of beam weapons," Austin remarked to Tie Kuang over the radio. "A beam weapon requires a three-megawatt cooling pump, twelve optical focus lenses that get dirty every twenty minutes, and an exawatt power tap that dims the streetlights. A ten-pound tungsten ball in a vacuum has zero thermal signature, zero electrical draw, and transfers seventy-five thousand foot-pounds of pure kinetic momentum right through their fancy crystal cockpits. And when you're done, you just walk over with a magnet, pick the ball up out of the wreckage, wipe it off with a rag, and load it back into the tube. That's called sustainable engineering."

High above on the mountain ridge, Pug took another slow, luxurious lick of his platinum tennis ball, closed his six eyes, and curled into a contented, rumbling heap, keeping the peace of the Asteroid Belt one bacon strip at a time.
