Chapter 226: The Galactic Shoring Blueprints

The drafting table in the central engineering vault of Ceres Terminal was eighty feet long, fabricated from cold-rolled titanium plate and surfaced with magnetic green vinyl matting.

Austin leaned over the vast table with his thick work gloves propped on his hips. Across his lower back, fifteen hundred pounds of certified lead ballast held him steady under one hundred Gs of localized gravity. The stainless steel ASME Section VIII nameplate riveted to his spine caught the glare of the overhead sodium lamps. On his hips, the eight-chamber fluid balancing gyroscopes hummed at fifteen hundred RPM in quiet, smooth harmony.

Over his shoulders, the twin ninety-degree star-jade exhaust elbow diverters rested in cold standby, capped with red silicone transit plugs.

In his right hand, Austin held a freshly sharpened No. 2 yellow grease pencil. With slow, deliberate sweeps of an eight-foot aluminum T-square, he was drawing heavy black lines across a fifty-foot roll of mylar drafting film.

The title block in the lower-right corner of the drawing bore the crisp, block-lettered heading: **PROJECT COSMIC SHORING & UNDERPINNING — PERSEUS SPIRAL ARM PERIMETER (DRAWING S-1001)**.

Standing around the perimeter of the table were the senior directors of the Solar System Public Works Coalition: Tie Kuang, Xuan Ming, Sword Patriarch Jiang Taixu, Sovereign Chen Tian, and Arch-Dominus Wu Ji.

Beside Austin’s right boot sat Pug, resting comfortably on a padded wool blanket with his paws tucked beneath his high-visibility orange safety vest, idly watching the pencil glide across the film.

"Look at this structural cross-section," Austin began, his voice flat, steady, and entirely free of panic. "Here is our solar system. Here is the local interstellar cloud. And out here, forty thousand light-years along the galactic plane, is the primary perimeter of the Perseus Spiral Arm."

He tapped the pencil against the drawing.

"Station Oort-Alpha’s gravitational interferometer confirmed the sensor readouts yesterday morning," Austin continued. "The macro-scale metric of the galaxy is decelerating at forty-two point eight kilometers per second per megaparsec. The outward expansion has stopped. The outer galactic rim has started to sag inward. In layman’s terms: the cosmic basement is experiencing severe differential settlement."

Xuan Ming swallowed hard, clutching his aluminum clipboard to his ribs as his ancient, ascetic face paled beneath his white hard hat.

"Master Austin," Xuan Ming whispered in hushed, trembling horror. "The scriptures of the First Ancestor call this the Inhalation of the Void. It is the Cosmic Big Crunch. It is the destined hour when the stars fall into the central pit, and all reality is unmade into the ancient soup of non-being. It is the judgment of Heaven!"

"It's not the judgment of Heaven, Xuan Ming," Austin said, letting out a dry sigh as he adjusted his welding goggles. "It's a textbook foundation settlement issue. Whoever poured the original spacetime metric fourteen billion years ago failed to account for long-term dead load consolidation. When you build a house on expansive clay without driving friction piles down to solid bedrock, what happens after fifty years? The center of the slab settles, the drywall cracks, and the door frames go out of plumb. You don't throw your hands up and call it a holy apocalypse. You hire a foundation contractor, set up hydraulic shoring jacks, and underpin the slab."

Tie Kuang scratched his copper-scaled chin with a heavy claw, leaning over the blueprint.

"Boss," Tie Kuang grunted, eyeing the scale bar at the bottom of the sheet. "You’re talking about an underpinned area spanning sixty thousand light-years. How many hydraulic jacks are we talking about?"

Austin flipped to the second sheet of mylar, which displayed the master bill of materials:

DEV CONSOLE
STANDALONE HOST
[PROJECT COSMIC SHORING: BILL OF MATERIALS - PHASE 1]
Hydraulic Shoring Cylinders: 50,000 Units [500-Ton Capacity]
Structural Cribbing Beams: 10,000,000 Tons Sintered Star-Jade
Macro-Tension Tieback Cables: 200,000,000 Miles Braided Alloy
Foundation Friction Piles: 4,000 Transuranic Core Pilings
Target Stabilization Sector: Perseus Arm Compression Fault
Inward Subsidence Velocity: -42.8 km/s/Mpc [TO BE ARRESTED]
Labor Allocation: 3,000,000 Maintenance Personnel [3 Shifts]

"Fifty thousand heavy hydraulic shoring cylinders," Austin read off the bill. "Five-hundred-ton rating each, cast from forged titanium-tungsten alloy with double-acting chrome-plated pistons. Ten million tons of star-jade structural cribbing timbers for temporary blocking. And two hundred million miles of two-inch braided star-jade wire rope to act as seismic tieback cables."

Arch-Dominus Wu Ji, standing proudly in his neon-yellow safety vest with his hands clasped behind his back, leaned forward with a sharp gleam in his eye.

"Foreman Austin," Wu Ji said, his voice crisp with professional discipline. "The three million men of the Deep-Void Maintenance Corps have completed the Ceres railway grade. Our compaction metrics are certified at ninety-eight point six percent. My battalions are trained in laser-transit leveling, pneumatic torque wrenches, and structural steel rigging. Where do you want the cribbing yards established?"

Austin nodded in approval. "Good to hear, Wu Ji. We’re staging the primary fabrication yard on Mars. Tie Kuang, I want the five-mile smelting foundries on Mars switched over to heavy hydraulic cylinder production immediately. Three continuous eight-hour shifts. No downtime except for scheduled thirty-minute lube breaks."

"Consider it done, Boss," Tie Kuang replied, slamming his fist onto his chest. "We’ve got eighty million tons of raw nickel-iron and star-jade ore sitting in the Vesta stockpiles ready to pour. Chonker can haul the raw billets to the casting bays on automated tractors."

Austin turned to Jiang Taixu and Sovereign Chen Tian.

"Jiang Taixu, Chen Tian. The Mercury solar collection arrays and the Earth-Moon grid will supply the electrical load. We need ten zettawatts of continuous, unvarying three-phase power routed out to the Kuiper Belt switching yards to drive the hydraulic pump skids. I want zero voltage sag on that twenty-two-thousand-kilovolt DC busbar."

"The sword elders of our sect shall guard the boiler turbines day and night," Jiang Taixu swore solemnly, placing his hand over his sect medallion. "Zero megawatts shall waver."

"The Earth-Moon industrial coalition will supply seventy million tons of cold-drawn star-jade wire rope for the tieback cables within fourteen days," Chen Tian added, his voice ringing with absolute determination. "Our factories are already spooling the cable onto ten-thousand-foot wooden reels."

Austin tapped the mylar drawing with the grease pencil.

"Now, the sequence of operations," Austin said, his eyes scanning the blue-lined grid. "Step One: We transport the survey crews out to Station Oort-Alpha to map the primary compression fault line along the Perseus Arm boundary. Step Two: Chonker drives the first four thousand transuranic friction piles through the galactic disc to establish solid foundation bedrock. Step Three: We install the hydraulic shoring jacks and take up the initial dead-load deflection. And Step Four: Once the inward subsidence is arrested, we install the macro-scale seismic expansion joints to prepare for the Big Bounce."

Xuan Ming stared at Austin, his breath catching in his throat.

"The... the Big Bounce?" Xuan Ming murmured. "You intend not merely to stop the collapse of the universe... but to cause it to expand anew?"

"Of course," Austin said, as if stating the most obvious law on a job site. "When a foundation settles and you jack it back up, you don't leave the house sitting crooked on temporary wood cribbing. You level the floors. You install heavy-duty seismic pads, and you let the building settle into balance. If the universe wants to collapse inward, we’ll catch the load on our hydraulic jacks. We'll store that crushing energy in our star-jade accumulator banks, then fire it back in a clean, controlled rebound. A clean, code-compliant Big Bounce."

He looked down at his yellow legal pad, checking the numerical progression requirements for the project.

[CORE LOAD ANALYSIS: LEVEL 96 THRESHOLD]
STANDALONE HOST
Current Core Mass: 0.50 Earth Masses [3.00 x 10^24 kg]
Projected Load Influx: +0.50 Earth Masses
Target Mass: 1.00 Earth Mass [6.00 x 10^24 kg]
Target Rank: Level 96 Master Shoring Anchor
Ballast Requirement: 1,600 lbs [+100 lbs Lead Slug Added]
Dynamic Damper Setting: 1,600 RPM Fluorocarbon Circulation

Austin’s eyes narrowed slightly behind his welding goggles.

To anchor a hydraulic shoring system that could brace a galactic spiral arm, his personal center of mass had to double. He needed to jump from half an Earth mass to a full, solid Earth mass. That meant packing six times ten to the twenty-fourth kilograms into the dense, compressed dark core seated inside his belly.

He reached down to his tool pouch, pulled out a small steel machinist's scale, and tapped the frame on his lower back.

"Tie Kuang," Austin said.

"Yeah, Boss?"

"Tell the cryo-storage locker on Kuiper-01 to prep two more fifty-pound lead ballast slugs. Brackets nineteen and twenty. When we start driving those galactic foundation piles, I’m going to need sixteen hundred pounds of lead on my hips to keep from getting kicked into deep space by the hammer recoil."

"Slugs are on the shuttle, Boss," Tie Kuang grinned. "Machined and stamped with the NIST certification marks."

Austin picked up his five-foot titanium-tungsten pipe wrench from the wall rack, slung the heavy nylon shoulder strap across his orange safety vest, and adjusted his hard hat.

Beside him, Pug stood up on his four stubby legs, shaking his fur with a vigorous *flapp-flapp-flapp*. He picked up his platinum regulation tennis ball in his mouth, trotted over to Austin’s boot, and looked up with bright, unblinking black eyes.

*"WOOF!"*

Austin smiled faintly, reaching down to pat Pug’s sturdy little head.

"All right, crew," Austin announced, rolling up the fifty-foot mylar blueprint and securing it with two heavy rubber bands. "The drawings are approved, the bill of materials is ordered, and the shifts are assigned. Let's head out to the Perseus fault. We’ve got an entire galaxy to jack up."
