A gentle breeze drifted down from the northern ridges, rustling through the leaves of the Primordial Spirit Willow. Yet as the sweet scent of blooming jade rice and the faint, lingering perfume of fermenting frost-peaches floated across the valley, Lin Xiao felt a subtle prickle of caution stir within his azure core.
He sat atop the wooden railing of the tea terrace, looking out over the basin.
Two hundred and fifty citizens now lived within the valley. Smoke curled peacefully from forty cedar cottages. Laughing rabbit cubs chased grasshoppers along the stone aqueducts. And stacks of cured cedar timber stood ready for the construction of new communal granaries. Down in the valley center, twenty casks of divine peach wine rested in the cool vaults beneath the willow roots, while fifty mu of emerald rice bowed heavily toward the earth.
In my old world, having a warehouse packed with forty thousand pounds of high-grade goods without an alarm system or a solid outer edge fence was asking for trouble, Lin Xiao reflected, his semi-clear blue body flattening slightly in contemplation. In this world, where passing fighters murder each other over a three-hundred-year-old ginseng root, our little valley is glowing like a mountain of pure gold. If a traditional sect elder or a demonic beast pack wanders in here, this peace won’t last an afternoon.
“Host’s threat check is exceptionally accurate,” the Omniscient Dao Spirit chimed within his mind. “Regional scouting models indicate that high-thickness spiritual agriculture generates subtle magnetic and spiritual distortions detectable by Core Formation spiritual senses within a fifty-li radius. Without active spiritual shielding, discovery probability reaches eighty-seven point four percent within thirty solar cycles.”
Lin Xiao gave an azure nod. “Can we build a defensive barrier? But listen, Dao Spirit: I don’t want a giant glowing energy dome that screams ‘secret treasure buried here!’ to every flying fighter in the sky. If you put up a giant red forcefield, curious people will just try to crack it open with hammers. We need something subtle. Something that makes people wander right past us without ever noticing the valley exists.”
“Analyzing world-size geomancy, sky humidity, and local leyline ground shape,” the Dao Spirit responded. “Formulating optimal defense matrix. Calculating model completed: [The Eight-Trigrams Cloud-Mist Deflection Array].”
Lin Xiao’s crescent eyes widened with interest. “How does it work?”
“Rather than using rigid spiritual forcefields that generate moving pushback and emit detectable energy flares, the array leverages the natural moisture output of the Clear Stream River and the earth-heat vents. By embedding sixty-four runic boundary giant pillars along the outer edge ridges, the array creates a surrounding geomantic refractive slope. Light rays, spiritual senses, and moving trajectories entering the boundary zone are deflected by zero point five degrees per meter. Trespassers unconsciously experience spatial disorientation, walking in wide, natural semicircles around the basin while believing they’re traveling in a straight line.”
“Spatial vector bending through natural mountain mist,” Lin Xiao murmured, his jelly-like surface rippling with admiration. “Brilliant. A velvet barrier. No blood, no alarms, no smashed gates. Just a gentle nudge that says ‘nothing to see here, keep moving.’ Let’s build it.”
Ten minutes later, Lin Xiao hopped down the earthen steps into the central forge shop gorge.
Tie Shan was standing over a massive granite anvil. His star-iron arm glowed with dull crimson heat as he hammered out boundary brackets from refined dark iron. The sound of metal striking metal rang out in rhythmic clangs that rang against the canyon walls.
“Uncle Tie!” Lin Xiao called out, bouncing to a halt on a low bench. “I need sixty-four boundary giant pillars. Granite pillars, eight feet high, inset with astral-iron runes.”
Tie Shan wiped the soot from his forehead with the back of his massive furred hand. He grinned down at the blue slime. “Boundary stones? You’re laying out a ward, Lord Xiao?”
“An invisible mist ward,” Lin Xiao explained, using a slender azure tendril to sketch the eight-trigram trigrams in the grey stone dust on the workbench. “We place eight pillars at each of the eight cardinal and intercardinal compass directions along the outer ridges. Each stone needs to be carved with these specific flow-runes to channel the mountain dew into a nonstop refractive mist.”
Tie Shan leaned over the sketches, his thick brows knitting together as he traced the fine, detailed sharp-angled patterns with a clawed finger. The giant bear’s eyes slowly widened with mounting amazement.
“These runes... They don’t channel thunder or explosive fire,” Tie Shan muttered, his gravelly voice dropping into hushed respect. “They mimic the natural veins of river stone and morning clouds! Even an ancient array master from the Grand Sects would need forty years of seclusion to deduce a posture this harmonious! Lord Xiao, your mastery of the Dao of Formations is truly impossible to understand.”
Lin Xiao gave an inward sigh. I didn’t deduce anything. My internal supercomputer did all the math in four seconds. But as long as the stones get carved, I’m happy.
“Can we get them ready before sundown, Uncle Tie?”
“With Lu Ba’s stonecutters helping? We’ll have all sixty-four giant pillars carved and set before twilight!” Tie Shan roared with loud pride. “Hey! Grey-Rock badgers! Grab your heavy sledges and cold-chisels! The Lord has work for the mountain!”
For the next six hours, the eastern gorge transformed into a whirlwind of purposeful industry.
Teams of burly badger stonemasons split dense grey granite from the high cliff faces, squaring each block to eight feet in height and two feet in width. Tie Shan personally melted down thirty pounds of astral-iron ore. He poured the blazing bright, liquid silver alloy into the carved runic channels on the surface of each stone. The moment the molten star-iron hardened, the granite pillars hummed with a deep, underground shaking that rang in harmony with the mountain’s dormant leylines.
The sun began to dip toward the western peaks. Then, painting the clouds in shades of copper and violet, teams of beastfolk and wolves hauled the sixty-four giant pillars up to the outer edge ridgeline.
Xiao Hei led the deployment along the dangerous northern crests. He leapt effortlessly across rocky chasms while guiding teams of four adult wolves who carried the heavy stones on sturdy cedar sleds. Along the southern slopes, Tie Shan hoisted the final stone onto his own shoulder. He drove its base three feet deep into the bedrock with a single, ground-shaking titan stomp that sent ripples through the mountain roots.
The sixty-fourth stone was locked into place. Then, the entire one-hundred-and-twenty-li outer edge formed an unbroken sharp-angled circle enclosing the fertile basin.
Lin Xiao climbed to the highest watch-rock overlooking the western pass.
Below him, the sixty-four granite giant pillars stood like quiet guards along the ridgeline, their astral-iron runes catching the dying rays of the sun. Deep within his core, the Dao Spirit lined up the spiritual frequencies of each node. He waited for the sovereign spark.
“All nodes timed together,” the Dao Spirit confirmed. “Host may now initialize the array with a main ringing pulse of Chaos Qi.”
Lin Xiao flattened his body against the flat summit stone. He focused his will on the glowing golden-azure gyro-core at the center of his Ancient Void.
Thump.
A single pulse of undivided chaos qi rippled outward from his surface. It wasn’t a violent explosion of energy, but a deep, ringing wave that felt like a pebble dropping into a calm mountain lake. The wave traveled through the bedrock, passing through the roots of the Spirit Willow and streaming into the sixty-four boundary giant pillars at the same time.
The reaction was instant and breathtaking.
Along the entire outer edge ridgeline, the astral-iron runes flared with a soft, ghostly silver-blue light. From the crevices of the stones and the damp forest floor beneath the trees, thick plumes of pale, milky-white mountain mist began to billow outward. The mist rose like a living silk veil, flowing down the outer slopes of the five crescent peaks and pooling into the surrounding ravines.
Within moments, the entire valley vanished from external sight.
To anyone looking toward the safe hall from the outside wilderness, the grand tiered arena of rice terraces, the smoking cedar cottages. The towering canopy of the Primordial Spirit Willow simply ceased to exist. In their place appeared an unbroken expanse of tangled scrub pine, craggy grey cliffs, and a dense, natural sea of rolling mountain fog.
Lin Xiao hopped off the summit rock. It bounced down to the western boundary line where the path crossed through the mist veil.
Xiao Hei was already waiting there, sitting silently in the shadow of the lead monolith. The massive wolf king lifted his dark muzzle, sniffing the swirling white vapor with keen curiosity.
“How does it feel from out there, Xiao Hei?” Lin Xiao asked through their soul link.
The wolf stood up, padded thirty paces into the mist toward the outer wilderness. Then turned around, attempting to walk directly back toward Lin Xiao.
Lin Xiao watched with fascinating amusement. To Xiao Hei, who was deliberately trying to re-enter the clearing, his path felt fully straight. But in reality, as the wolf took ten strides, the subtle moisture currents in the air and the slight earth-magnet curve guided his footsteps in a gentle arc. Xiao Hei emerged back out of the mist forty paces to the left of where he had entered. It looked around in utter confusion.
“Master,” Xiao Hei whispered across the link, his ruby eyes wide with shock. “My senses are sharp enough to track a sparrow through a blizzard, yet when I entered that white vapor, the ground itself seemed to tilt beneath my paws! I believed I was walking toward your voice, yet my feet carried me right back onto the outer mountain trail!”
Lin Xiao chuckled, a cheerful fluid wobble rippling through his blue dome. “That means it’s working perfectly. If someone follows this path from the outside, they’ll just think the trail wound around the mountain and keep walking toward the lowlands.”
At that moment, a soft chime sounded in his mind:
Lin Xiao turned back toward the warm lights of the village.
Through the gaps in the cedar cottages, he could see families sitting on their verandas, sharing bowls of steamed rice and listening to the rhythmic chirping of mountain crickets. High above, the emerald leaves of the Spirit Willow rustled in the evening breeze, sheltered safely beneath an invisible blanket of cloud and stone.
A warm home, a full pantry, and a front door that nobody can find, Lin Xiao thought happily as he rolled toward the bathhouse water chutes. Tonight, everyone in this valley is going to sleep like a baby.
