The Keep’s rider caught up with the carts at the Millmarch turn, and he held out a folded paper without slowing his horse.
Calen took it. The rider did not wait for an answer. He turned his horse on the stones and went back down the road toward the Keep at a canter, as if the paper were hot.
Calen opened it on the cart seat.
Six captains raised at the old plot this morning. Merrin Cold, Brannoc Sayle, Ottilie Brede, Hobb Garret, Teague Cray, Wendel Trusk. Names in the Hask Book. No count. T.
He read it twice. Then he folded it along the same crease and put it inside his coat, beside the small Ledger, and he did not look back at the road.
“Six,” said Nell, from the seat beside him. She had seen the paper and the rider. She did not ask what was in it.
“Six captains,” said Calen. “The Keep’s plot.”
“Tobin named them?”
