Calen set the price at the gate count, before anyone had their bread.
Ear called the seven names one at a time. Seven answered.
Kade answered last, and this time he did not wait a breath before he spoke. Calen heard it and put it aside.
Kade’s coat hung open at the front. Under the lining Calen could see a stiff square, folded small. It was the copy Ysra had made of the Silverspire sheet.
Calen did not ask to see it. Rule two did not cover paper.
“Ansel broke the second rule,” said Calen.
Nobody in the yard moved. Dorran looked at the ground. Liss looked at Kade.
Tobin looked at the gate, as if a cart might come through and take the rule back.
