Julian drew a paper cup of sterile water from the chilled water cooler in Nurse Station 4B.
The heavy five-gallon clear plastic jug gurgled softly, sending three large air bubbles wobbling upward through the inverted reservoir. Julian held the white pleated paper cone level, feeling the icy cold seep through the paraffin wax coating into his fingertips.
Beside him at the central desk, Elena reached into the auxiliary drawer and adjusted the wire on the telemetry earpiece. Her Littmann Cardiology IV stethoscope hung ready around her neck, its stainless-steel bell polished and cold against her collarbone.
“Mr. Gable was admitted three weeks ago,” Elena said, her voice dropping into a quiet clinical briefing.
“The official chart lists him as observation for congestive heart failure and mild cognitive impairment. But Devon Wu’s note explicitly warned us: he has Marjorie Bell’s 1996 brass key. And now he’s ringing the bell, offering to pay for water.”
“The Master Cash Prohibition,” Julian said, his hand checking his right scrub pocket where his Store #04 brass cash-drawer key rested. “In the Grey Shift, accepting physical currency transfers unregistered bearer debt.
