Julian Vance carried the blue plastic Addressograph plate through the wire-glass entrance of Nurse Station 4B.
He crossed the yellow bio-line and set the plate down in the center of the oak counter.
The shift clock on the wall clicked forward with a quiet, authoritative tick: 01:21 AM.
Under the sterile white glare of the restored overhead lights, the royal-blue card gleamed like polished slate. The stamped stainless-steel edge frame was cold, reflecting the fluorescent tubes.
Julian brought his 10x Hastings triplet loupe up to his eye, leaning close to the plastic surface.
The plate was an authentic mid-century medical artifact, embossed on a Pitney Bowes mechanical punch press. Along the raised lettering, dried ribbons of purple hectograph ink remained embedded in the plastic grooves.
“Look at the admission timestamp,” Julian said, his voice quiet in the warm station air.
Elena stepped beside him, her stethoscope resting on her chest. She looked through the magnifying glass.
