Elena Rostova did not hesitate for a single second.
“Cover the station entrance, Julian!” Elena shouted over the hurricane roar of the vacuum.
She lunged to the utility corner beside the medication safe. Her gloved hands caught the cold chrome upright of a heavy six-foot telescoping stainless-steel IV pole.
The pole was mounted on five cast-iron caster wheels, equipped with twin curved surgical steel ram’s-horn hooks at the top.
Elena spun around, locking her combat boot firmly behind the glowing yellow bio-line at the nurse station threshold.
Julian leaned over the desk, shining his three-hundred-and-sixty-five-nanometer UV pen directly onto the rubber sole of Elena’s boot. The ultraviolet beam activated the zinc sulfide crystals embedded in the floor paint, locking a brilliant neon halo around her boot heel.
“Municipal Immunity Doctrine Section Four,” Julian called out, holding the light steady. “As long as one conductive contact point remains grounded to the sanctuary floor, institutional authority extends along the full length of any handheld metal tool! You have legal coverage, Elena!”
Under White Chart Rule W-1, an on-duty nurse could not step completely outside the station perimeter while an active emergency was underway. But with the UV beam locking her anchor, the six-foot stainless-steel IV pole became a legal extension of the station itself.
