The faded blue ink at the top of the 1996 intake manifest didn’t smear or fluoresce under the purple lamp.
Julian stood frozen in the thirty-six-degree air of the Pathology Archive Room. His gloved right hand trembled just enough to make the narrow beam of his 365nm ultraviolet pen waver across the thirty-year-old cotton rag paper.
Beside him, Elena stepped back from the brass threshold while keeping the laminated White Master Chart angled toward the hallway. She rested her free hand on her stethoscope tubing, her grey eyes fixed on the open folio. The silence between them felt heavier than the cast-iron pipes overhead.
There it was. Written across the very top line of the emergency manifest dated October 21, 1996, at 02:14 AM:
PATIENT #000: VANCE, THOMAS -- SENIOR MUNICIPAL SAFETY INSPECTOR (#00).
GUARDIAN ESCROW BOND #96-1021-B: FULL FACIAL IDENTITY PLEDGED AS DEFERRED ESCROW COLLATERAL. EXEMPTING MINORS JULIAN VANCE (AGE 4) AND CLARA VANCE (UNBORN, 26 WEEKS) FROM MASTER CENSUS (ACTIVATED: OCT 2020).
Julian touched the dry margin beside the signature with the tip of his white cotton glove.
The handwriting slanted sharply to the right at a clean fifteen-degree angle. Every downstroke was firm and deliberate, and the crossbars on the capital T were ruled flat like structural steel I-beams. Julian knew that penmanship better than he knew his own reflection in the front window of Store #04.
