Chapter 121: The Boundary Market

The outer rim of Solitude Spire looked like a cosmic traffic jam.

Where the great mithril suspension bridge stretched across the empty sky toward the Radiant Dawn Academy, the clouds were choked with ships.

More than two hundred flying vessels hovered bumper to bumper.

There were gilded dragon-prow galleons from the High Sun Empire, sleek jade platforms from the Azure Cloud Dynasty, floating silk pavilions from the Western Merchant League, and iron-clad skiffs from the Myriad Beast Kingdom.

Every vessel was moored to massive floating anchor stones, bobbing gently in the warm golden breeze that drifted off the Seventh Spire.

Down on the stone landing platform, hundreds of the wealthiest men and women in the eastern sky crowded behind a red velvet velvet rope.

Grand elders with six-foot white beards shoved imperial finance ministers.

Noble matriarchs dripping in diamonds elbowed sovereign guild masters.

Everyone held velvet pouches bulging with supreme-grade astral jade, golden promissory notes, and deeds to fertile continental provinces.

They were not here to purchase imperial battlefleets.

They were not here to bid on ancient immortal scriptures.

They were screaming at a wooden trestle table for garden compost.

"Three hundred thousand astral spirit stones for the bundle on the left!" a merchant prince from the Golden Lotus Guild bellowed, waving a gold-stamped scroll. "I will throw in a floating summer palace in the southern seas!"

"Fierce dog, get behind me!" an ancient Daoist grand elder roared back, his sleeves flapping with righteous fury. "Our Azure Cloud Sect offers half a mountain of dragon-vein crystals and three spirit mines! We need that sacred foliage for our supreme ancestor's breakthrough!"

Behind the wooden table sat Lady Lyra Ashford.

She wore crisp, tailored robes of pale moonlight silk, her silver rapier resting flat across her knees.

Her posture was flawless, her expression as calm and unreadable as winter frost.

In her right hand, she held a goose-feather quill. In her left, an ink-stained accounting ledger.

Beside her stood Lord Nether-Bane, the former Ghost King of the northern void.

The towering skeletal horror wore a stained hemp apron over his ancient bone armor.

In his bony claws, he carefully held a weathered wicker bushel basket filled with wilted vegetable clippings.

Two translucent spectral corsairs hovered on either side of the basket, wearing matching hemp aprons and guarding the contents as though it were the imperial treasury.

"Quiet," Lyra said smoothly.

Her voice was not loud, but the entire floating market fell dead silent.

Two hundred imperial rulers held their collective breath.

"Senior Brother Vance values peace above all worldly wealth," Lyra said, dipping her quill into the inkwell. "Anyone who raises their voice above conversational volume will be banned from the boundary platform for three lunar cycles."

The merchant prince clamped both hands over his own mouth, nodding frantically in terror.

"Now then," Lyra continued, turning the parchment page. "Lot Forty-Two. Pruned outer foliage from the central vegetable bed. Harvested this morning by Lord Nether-Bane during routine maintenance."

The Ghost King trembled slightly.

He lifted the wicker basket a few inches higher, exposing a small pile of slightly bruised, yellowing outer cabbage leaves.

To any mortal eye, it was compost.

It was the slimy, sun-bleached scrap an ordinary farmer would toss into the pig trough.

Yet the moment the morning sunlight struck the leaves, a faint golden mist billowed from the wicker rim.

The air filled with the scent of roasted honey and pure celestial fire.

Every grand elder in the front row nearly fainted from spiritual intoxication.

【Item: Wilted Sun-Lotus Cabbage Trimmings】 【Grade: Five-Star Garden Waste】 【Origin: Pruned from the base of the central crop by a terrified undead monarch】 【Properties: Saturated with 0.0004% ambient Sol-Class core radiation】 【Inspector Note: Felix threw these out because the edges were yellow and tasted bitter in soup. Consuming one leaf cures two centuries of mortal meridian decay and causes spontaneous enlightenment in elderly cultivators. Sells for zero copper at normal grocery stores.】

"A sacred treasure..." the Azure Cloud grand elder wept, tears streaming into his white beard. "The True Yang solar essence is so dense it weeps liquid fire! A single bite would purge three hundred years of cold marrow rot from our founder's veins!"

"The minimum bid is ten crates of high-grade jasmine tea leaves and twenty bags of dried lotus seeds," Lyra said, her quill scratching across the parchment. "And fifty bolts of mountain cloud-silk."

"Sold!" the grand elder screamed, dropping to his knees. "Bring forward the silk! Bring forward the imperial tea! Spare no expense!"

Three disciples rushed forward, carrying lacquered chests filled with aromatic tea canisters and shimmering rolls of iridescent silk.

Lord Nether-Bane tipped two wilted cabbage leaves into a velvet-lined silver tray, bowing stiffly.

The grand elder took the tray with shaking hands, cradling the yellowed leaves as if they were newborn infants, sobbing openly with divine joy.

Lyra recorded the transaction with neat, elegant calligraphy.

*Senior Brother's vision is truly beyond mortal comprehension,* Lyra thought, her heart swelling with reverence.

*He ordered the Ghost King to rake the garden beds, claiming he disliked clutter near the porch.*

*Yet by casting aside these divine scraps, he has effortlessly brought the commerce of twelve empires to our front door.*

*He does not exploit them. He does not demand their fealty. He simply allows them to trade their finest luxuries for the dust of his footsteps.*

*This is the true Dao of Sovereign Indifference.*

"Next lot," Lyra called out, turning to the second wicker basket. "Lot Forty-Three. Cleanings from the raptor roost."

Lord Nether-Bane lifted a wooden crate containing cracked eggshells and two shed golden feathers.

The crowd surged forward again, eyes wild with desperate greed.

"That is the molt of the Divine Heavenly Thunder Gryphon!" a beastmaster general shouted, his knuckles turning white on the rope barrier. "Those eggshells contain the primordial frequency of celestial ozone! We will trade eight spirit-iron mines in the western ridge!"

"Quiet your tongue, general!" another shouted. "Our guild offers twelve barrels of aged honey-wine and three hundred thousand gold ingots!"

Lord Nether-Bane looked sideways at the spectral corsair beside him.

His jawbone gave a faint, terrified rattle: *clack-clack-clack.*

"Captain Vane," the Ghost King whispered through his hollow teeth. "Do you think the Master will be displeased?"

"Displeased by what, Your Malevolence?" the ghost pirate murmured back.

"We took twelve minutes longer than scheduled to rake the eastern gravel walkway," Nether-Bane whimpered softly. "If the Supreme Sovereign looks down from his porch and sees this vulgar rabble trading gold for bird droppings, he might ignite the atmosphere out of sheer annoyance."

"Keep your bones steady," the corsair muttered, adjusting his hemp apron. "Lady Lyra said the Master is still asleep. As long as nobody wakes him before noon, our souls remain intact."

Meanwhile, up on the high cedar terrace of Solitude Spire, the bedroom window creaked open.

A gentle morning breeze blew through the curtains.

Felix Vance sat on the edge of his unmade mattress, rubbing his eyes with the palms of his hands.

He was wearing his faded gray sleeping tunic and rumpled linen trousers.

On his feet, he lazily slid into a pair of worn straw slippers.

He reached for the bedside table, picking up the heavy obsidian-and-brass slate of his AetherDeck.

He tapped the power notch with his thumb.

The screen lit up with a clean, low-contrast amber glow:

Felix blinked at the screen, letting out a slow, sleepy yawn.

"Merchant caravan?" Felix mumbled.

He stood up, walking across the cool cedar floorboards out onto the covered porch.

He leaned against the wooden railing, looking past the immaculate cabbage patch and down toward the far edge of the island where the suspension bridge met the sky.

Brightly colored silks fluttered in the distance.

Dozens of colorful floating barges were lined up along the horizon like paper lanterns at a summer carnival.

Strings of red festive pennants fluttered in the mountain breeze, and the faint, sweet smell of roasted sugar, fried pastries, and steamed dough drifted up the ridge.

Felix tilted his head.

"Wait a second," Felix whispered, his eyes narrowing. "Is that a street festival?"

He looked closely at the crowd gathered at the bridgehead.

He saw people carrying paper bags of candied fruit, steaming bamboo steamer baskets, and wooden skewers.

"The devs finally added a seasonal event," Felix said, his stomach giving an appreciative rumble. "A weekly weekend market. That actually makes sense. Why else would there be twenty food stalls parked outside the loading zone?"

He looked down at his own kitchen counter through the open window.

The pantry was full of dry rations, salted jerky, and plain rice.

He had been eating cold porridge and pickled cucumbers for three straight days.

"I need actual snacks," Felix decided. "If there are street vendors down there selling fresh meat buns and sugar skewers, I'm not sitting up here chewing dried beef."

He tucked the AetherDeck into the deep inner pocket of his hemp tunic.

He reached down, grabbing his wide-brimmed straw hat from the peg beside the door.

He set it lightly onto his messy hair, adjusted his straw slippers with a quick scuff against the cedar planks, and ambled down the porch steps.

"Five minutes," Felix told himself, strolling along the manicured gravel path. "Grab a bag of buns, grab something sweet, and get back to the hammock before the morning sun gets too hot."

Down at the boundary platform, two hundred imperial rulers were still screaming over a handful of clipped grass.

None of them realized that the master of the sun had just stepped out for groceries.
