Chapter 052: The Out-of-Bounds Glitch

Three hundred miles beneath the northern mountain range, the air smelled of brimstone and cold iron.

Floor Three of the Abyssal Crypt was known in imperial archives as the Obsidian Colonnade. Massive stone pillars, each as thick as a watchtower, stretched up into darkness to support the subterranean ceiling.

Right now, that ceiling was raining fire.

"Hold the phalanx!" Grand Elder Moros roared, his crimson robes whipping in the hot gale. "Shieldbearers, channel your spirit cores! Do not break rank!"

Three hundred elite imperial spellblades braced their silver tower shields together, forming an interlocking dome of shimmering runic light. The defensive barrier groaned as waves of black hellfire crashed against its surface.

Circling in the smoky air above them were seventy Obsidian Gargoyles.

Each monster was a Seventh-Tier demonic construct carved from cursed volcanic rock, boasting a thirty-foot wingspan and talons that could slice through reinforced steel like wet tofu. Their eyes burned with malevolent violet flame, and their stony shrieks shattered the stalactites clinging to the cavern roof.

【Target: Obsidian Gargoyle Swarm】 【Grade: 7th-Tier Subterranean Guardian】 【Armor Rating: Impervious to Mortal Steel】 【Inspector Note: Heavy, angry stone bats with zero manners and bad breath. Highly resistant to physical trauma, extremely vulnerable to bad game coding.】

Moros wiped a smear of ash from his wrinkled forehead, his heart sinking with every passing second.

"Grand Elder!" an imperial captain shouted over the deafening roars. "The phalanx cannot endure much longer! Our spirit stones are already fifty percent depleted!"

Moros gritted his yellowing teeth, drawing his celestial broadsword.

"If we fall here, our bones shall pave the underworld!" Moros yelled, archaic cultivation fervor ringing in his cracked voice. "We fight for the majesty of the High Sun Empire! Ready your blades for a glorious death!"

The gargoyles folded their wings and dove in unison, plummeting like seventy black meteors aimed straight at the crumbling shield dome.

Two hundred miles away, under a peaceful afternoon sky, Felix Vance took a sip of iced melon juice.

He was still horizontal in his Zero-Gravity Recliner on the porch of Solitude Spire. His bare toes wiggled comfortably against the cedar railing, catching the fragrant breeze rolling off the Sun-Lotus Cabbage.

Beside him, Barnaby the clockwork owl stood on watch, his black rubber stopper keeping his pompous morning lectures strictly internal.

Felix tapped the brass-cased AetherDeck with his thumbs, staring at the glowing screen.

On the 8-bit display, his tiny silver knight had reached the third floor of *Catacomb Crawler v2.0*.

In the center of the pixelated chamber, a dense cluster of purple-and-black bat sprites flapped back and forth, blocking the corridor leading to the next staircase.

Felix stared at the estimated clear time, his eyebrows pulling together in deep, profound annoyance.

"Fourteen minutes?" Felix groaned softly. "Fourteen whole minutes of mashing the attack button against flying damage sponges? Are you kidding me?"

In any game, flying enemies with heavy armor were universally recognized as the absolute worst mob design in existence. They flew out of melee range, hit hard, and took an eternity to kill.

"I am not sitting here tapping the screen for a quarter of an hour just to clear some trash bats," Felix muttered. "My iced melon juice will get warm."

He paused, resting his thumbs on the virtual controls, and inspected the room layout.

The chamber was a rectangular grid of gray cobblestone tiles surrounded by dark purple wall blocks. But right near the northwest corner, where two wall sections joined at a ninety-degree angle, Felix noticed something odd.

The pixel texture was slightly off.

Instead of a clean, seamless joint, there was a one-pixel gap of empty black void between the two wall blocks. A faint shimmer ran down the seam, indicating that the collision box hadn't been properly pinned to the floor grid.

Felix squinted at the screen.

"Wait a minute," he murmured. "Is that an unsealed vertex collision seam?"

He leaned closer, a tiny, knowing smirk tugging at his lips.

"Classic indie game bug," Felix said, shaking his head at the developers' sloppy work. "The tile-mapping tool didn't snap the corner pieces together. If the collision mesh isn't closed, the wall geometry has zero physical thickness."

Any veteran speedrunner knew what that meant. When you find an unsealed corner seam, you don't fight the mobs.

You break the game.

Felix maneuvered his tiny 8-bit knight away from the center of the room, tiptoeing around the aggro radius of the gargoyle sprites. He backed the silver knight into the northwest corner, angling the sprite at precisely forty-five degrees into the cracked vertex.

"Let's see if the old roll-cancel trick works on this engine," Felix whispered.

He performed the universal speedrunner sequence: `[D-PAD: UP-LEFT] + [ROLL] + [INTERACT]`.

On the screen, the silver knight rolled directly into the corner seam.

The sprite didn't bounce off the stone wall. Instead, it began to vibrate violently at sixty frames per second, its pixels stretching and distorting as the collision engine suffered a massive arithmetic overflow.

*ZIP.*

With a faint, hollow pop, the silver knight clipped straight through the solid purple wall.

The sprite emerged on the other side of the boundary, floating freely in the pitch-black void outside the map.

A series of bright yellow warning alerts flashed across the AetherDeck screen:

Felix chuckled softly. "Nice. Out-of-bounds void walk. Now I can just jog straight to the staircase without fighting a single bat."

He flicked the virtual D-pad, casually guiding his floating knight along the black perimeter of the level.

Two hundred miles away, in the subterranean depths of the Obsidian Colonnade, the laws of physics shattered.

Grand Elder Moros and his three hundred spellblades were braced for impact, swords raised, teeth clenched, waiting for seventy pairs of obsidian talons to tear into their flesh.

The gargoyles were twenty feet above them. Ten feet. Five feet.

Then, the world stuttered.

A sound like tearing parchment echoed through the massive cavern.

The air didn't explode. It glitched.

In a fraction of a second, the ancient obsidian stones beneath the gargoyles began to flicker rapidly, alternating between solid rock, wireframe grid lines, and absolute, empty nothingness.

The seventy Seventh-Tier Obsidian Gargoyles suddenly froze in mid-air.

Their terrifying violet eyes turned wide with utter, bewildered horror.

The subterranean floor beneath them had simply ceased to exist. In its place was an infinite, pitch-black abyss leading directly to the planet's molten mantle, thousands of miles below.

Because the gargoyles were locked in a dive, their momentum carried them downward.

Yet when their wings beat against the air to pull up, the air itself failed to provide resistance. The local spatial mesh had lost all collision properties.

*SQUAWK?!*

Seventy apex underworld monsters dropped like lead weights through the floor.

They didn't smash into the stone. They fell *through* the stone as if it were colored steam, plunging into the bottomless dimensional void beneath the world.

A distant, echoing *FWOOSH* drifted up from the depths, followed by seventy tiny pops of vaporized demon stone as the monsters dissolved in the planet's subterranean magma layer.

Silence fell over the cavern.

A heavy, suffocating silence.

Grand Elder Moros stood frozen with his broadsword raised high above his head. The three hundred elite spellblades stared at the empty air, their mouths hanging wide open behind their silver visors.

Every last gargoyle had vanished.

The stone floor where the spellblades stood was completely solid, perfectly intact down to the millimeter. But the exact area where the monsters had been diving was an empty expanse of clean, polished cavern floor, devoid of ash, blood, or bone.

Moros’s broadsword slipped from his numb fingers, clattering loudly against the stone.

"What..." Moros breathed, his voice trembling so violently his teeth rattled. "What divine miracle was that?!"

An imperial battle-alchemist collapsed to his knees, clutching an array of divination mirrors that were smoking and spinning backward.

"Grand Elder!" the alchemist squeaked, terror choking his throat. "The heavenly laws! The karmic framework of this chamber was severed for three heartbeats! A supreme entity... someone stepped outside the wheel of reincarnation and dissolved the foundation of reality beneath the demons!"

Moros fell to both knees, pressing his forehead directly against the cold cavern floor.

"The Dao of Absolute Non-Existence!" Moros wept openly, his tears splashing against the obsidian tiles. "An ancient celestial ancestor has cast his gaze upon our humble vanguard! With a mere flick of his divine sleeve, he unstitched the fabric of space to spare our lives! Kowtow, you fools! Kowtow to the benevolent master of the void!"

Three hundred elite spellblades dropped to their knees in unison, their silver armor clattering against the stone as they slammed their heads into the floor in frantic, reverent worship.

Back on Solitude Spire, the breeze rustled the sweet leaves of the Sun-Lotus Cabbage.

Lyra Ashford stood beside Felix's floating recliner, her violet eyes wide with profound, holy terror.

She hadn't heard the cries of the gargoyles or seen the subterranean cavern, but she had felt the pulse.

The instant Felix's thumb twitched on the AetherDeck screen, the 2.0-Earth-Mass terrestrial core inside his chest had let out a tiny, microscopic burp. That minuscule micro-gravitational wobble had rippled across the northern tectonic plates, bending the spatial curvature of the earth by a fraction of a millimeter.

Lyra stared at the obsidian slate in Felix's hands.

On the screen, a tiny 8-bit knight was casually strolling through empty black space, completely ignoring the walls and obstacles of the dungeon.

*He... he walked outside the boundary of heaven and earth,* Lyra thought, her soul shaking so violently she could barely draw breath.

*The mortal vanguard encountered an insurmountable trial. Yet Senior Brother, in his infinite, silent benevolence, refused to let them perish. He did not even bother to draw a sword or recite a mantra. He simply stepped outside of existence, pulled the rug of the universe out from beneath the demons, and let them fall into the primordial void!*

She looked down at Felix, who was peacefully sipping his chilled melon juice.

*The Dao of the Void-Walk!* Lyra realized, her reverence reaching dizzying new heights. *To Senior Brother, the laws of the universe are not sacred boundaries. They are merely suggestions! When a wall stands in his way, he does not break it—he simply ceases to acknowledge that the wall exists!*

Felix took another slow sip of melon juice, then set the glass down on the pine side table.

On the screen, his 8-bit knight reached the bottom of the map, walking along the void until it aligned with the Floor Three exit stairs. Felix rolled the knight back toward the level boundary.

*POP.*

The silver knight clipped back into the game world, landing squarely on top of the descending stone staircase.

Felix smiled, thoroughly pleased with himself.

"Forty-eight seconds," Felix chuckled, stretching his legs until his ankles popped. "Now that's how you speedrun. Saved myself fourteen minutes of boring button mashing."

He glanced at his AetherDeck battery percentage, which sat comfortably at ninety-four percent.

"Old game engines with poor collision detection are truly a blessing," Felix sighed, settling his head back into the ergonomic mesh of his recliner. "If modern games had bugs this useful, nobody would ever complain about patches."

Barnaby let out a muffled brass squeak from behind his rubber stopper, clicking his copper-tipped beak in approval.

Down in the yard, the Thunder Gryphon let out a lazy snore, rolling onto its back to expose its warm white belly to the afternoon sun.

Felix pulled his straw hat back over his eyes, his thumb resting gently on the D-pad as the 8-bit knight trotted down the stairs to Floor Four.

"Next floor," Felix mumbled sleepily. "Let's see if the devs left any more collision seams open."
