Chapter 059: Catacomb Crawler Stage 2: The Magma Core

The afternoon sun cast long, amber shadows across the cedar planks of Solitude Spire.

Felix Vance sat comfortably inside his Zero-Gravity Recliner, suspended an inch above the porch floor.

His stomach was pleasantly full. The pot of beef and golden radish soup he had simmered for lunch had turned out tender, savory, and remarkably restorative.

Inside the house, through the screen door, Grandmaster Vivienne's Sovereign Heart Seal hummed steadily beneath the kitchen table, keeping the salt cellar and empty soup bowls perfectly level.

Down in the yard, the Thunder Gryphon lay in the clover with its head tucked under its wing.

Its feathered chest rose and fell in a slow, rhythmic snore, occasionally discharging a harmless static spark that danced across the grass. Beside it, the Sun-Lotus Cabbage and the newly cleared radish beds glowed with soft, ambient gold.

On the porch railing, Barnaby the clockwork owl remained on duty.

The thick black rubber stopper was wedged securely into his polished brass beak. In his left claw, Barnaby still held his dull copper coin, his amber crystal eyes glaring with cold stoicism toward the eastern horizon.

"Good meal, good weather," Felix murmured, resting his hands over his stomach. "Now it's time for some light gaming."

He reached into his linen pocket and produced the AetherDeck.

The brass-cased slate woke up with a pleasant vibration. Felix tapped the icon for *Catacomb Crawler 8-Bit*.

A splash screen flashed with blocky retro fire effects:

DEV CONSOLE
STANDALONE HOST
[CATACOMB CRAWLER 8-BIT: STAGE 2 UNLOCKED]
Current Zone: The Subterranean Magma Core
Floor Range: Levels 11 through 20
Environmental Hazard: [Uncontrolled Magma Surge]
Hazard Penalty: -15 HP per second to unshielded units
[MAP EDIT MODE AVAILABLE]: Pre-Run Terrain Optimization
Available Tools: [Trench Shovel], [Stone Sluice], [Canal]
[1. LAUNCH AUTO-CRAWL] [2. EDIT STAGE TERRAIN]

Felix frowned at the pixelated display.

The screen showed an 8-bit top-down view of a subterranean cavern. Bright red-and-orange pixels representing bubbling lava pools were scattered haphazardly across the dungeon floor.

Irregular magma streams twisted through the corridors like spilled soup, cutting off narrow pathways and threatening any unit that attempted to walk through.

"Lava levels," Felix sighed, shaking his head with deep gamer fatigue. "Always the worst levels in every retro RPG. Terrible pathfinding. Random fire damage ticks every two seconds. The auto-battle AI is definitely going to walk right into a lava pool and wipe my squad."

He tapped the screen, opening [EDIT STAGE TERRAIN].

"If the game gives you map-editing tools before launching the crawl," Felix said to himself, "you'd have to be an idiot not to clean up the hazards first."

He selected the [Trench Shovel] and [Canal] tools with his thumb.

On the screen, Felix began dragging neat, straight lines through the chaotic red pixel grid.

He dug five long, straight trenches through the subterranean stone, connecting the irregular lava lakes into a series of clean, right-angled drainage channels. With a few quick swipes, he carved a perimeter moat around the main walking corridors, funneling all the wild molten rock into deep, straight rectangular flumes.

"There," Felix muttered, inspecting his handiwork. "Perfect ninety-degree canals. Now the lava flows away from the main walking paths. The AI pathing won't get confused by random puddle hitboxes."

He tapped [APPLY TERRAIN CHANGES].

A tiny loading bar filled up on the screen with a cheerful *bloop*.

Fifty miles beneath the surface of the Eastern Continent, deep in the subterranean mantle, reality tore itself apart.

The *Great Yan Imperial Geothermal Observatory* was built into the solid granite roots of Mount Yan, the continent's most volatile dormant volcano.

Inside the massive basalt observation rotunda, three hundred bronze bells hung from ceiling chains, each linked to deep-earth vibration needles. At the center of the hall stood the *Primordial Earth-Pulse Resonance Basin*, a sixty-foot pool of mercury that mapped subterranean tectonic currents.

Grand Alchemist Huo Ling and Chief Imperial Geometer Master Yan stood on the upper catwalk, pale and trembling.

For the past forty-eight hours, the mercury basin had been frothing like boiling milk.

"The magma pressure in the seventh mantle stratum has exceeded three million pounds per square inch!" Master Yan screamed over the deafening clangor of forty bronze warning bells. "The subterranean fire dragon is waking! The molten veins beneath the three central provinces are fracturing their basalt containment sheets!"

Huo Ling wiped soot from his beard, clutching his alchemical measuring staff.

"If the subterranean magma breaks through the crust, seven thousand square miles of farmland will become a sea of ash!" Huo Ling yelled. "Have the emergency earth-suppression arrays been activated?"

"They burned out ten minutes ago!" a junior geometer shrieked from the basin floor. "The geological heat is too immense! It is an apocalyptic planetary surge! No mortal array can withstand the fury of the earth's core!"

Suddenly, the deafening roar of grinding tectonic plates ceased.

Every single one of the three hundred bronze bells went dead silent at the exact same instant.

Master Yan froze. Huo Ling stopped breathing.

From deep within the planetary bedrock, thousands of miles beneath their boots, came a sound none of them had ever heard before.

There was no explosion. No stone cracked or crumbled.

It was a smooth, rhythmic hum—like a celestial architect drawing a diamond-tipped ruler across the foundations of the world.

*SHING.*

*CRACK.*

*GROAN.*

Across three thousand miles of subterranean crust, the molten magma veins did not burst upward into the mortal realm.

Instead, an invisible, colossal force carved directly through the hardest basalt and primordial mantle stone.

Vast, jagged magma lakes that had raged uncontrolled since the dawn of the world were suddenly sheared into clean, rectangular boundaries. Tectonic fractures that had threatened to tear the continent in half were violently compressed and smoothed into immaculate, eighty-foot-deep canals.

In less than ten seconds, billions of tons of raging, apocalyptic magma were redirected into an astonishing, geometric grid of right-angled aqueducts.

The magma no longer boiled toward the surface. It flowed smoothly, quietly, and obediently through straight granite flumes, draining harmlessly into deep subterranean cooling reservoirs thousands of miles away from mortal settlements.

Inside the Imperial Geothermal Observatory, the mercury in the sixty-foot basin went glass-smooth.

On the surface of the mercury, the newly formed subterranean channels mapped themselves out in sharp, silver lines.

It was a perfect, flawless geometric grid.

Lines intersect at exact ninety-degree angles. Parallel canals spaced with mathematical precision. Every single volcanic pressure pocket across the entire continent had been vented, stabilized, and linked into a continental drainage network.

Master Yan dropped his bronze measuring caliper. It clattered against the iron grating, bouncing into the mercury pool below.

He stared down at the map with bloodshot, disbelieving eyes.

"What... what am I looking at?" Yan whispered, his voice trembling so hard he could barely shape the syllables. "The subterranean fire dragon... has been caged?"

Huo Ling fell to his knees on the catwalk, clutching the iron railing with white knuckles.

"This is not a cage," Huo Ling stammered, tears of sheer religious awe spilling down his sooty cheeks. "This is... civil engineering on a planetary scale! Who can command the subterranean mantle like damp clay? Who can force ten billion tons of primordial magma to make ninety-degree left turns?"

A junior geometer stared at the compass needles on his brass desk.

"Master! The spiritual resonance of the tectonic shift... it originated from the west! The Seventh Spire! The Sovereign's domain!"

Huo Ling dropped his forehead against the cold iron grate, weeping uncontrollably.

"The Sovereign of the Void..." Huo Ling sobbed. "He saw that our continent was on the brink of fiery annihilation. He did not dispatch armies. He did not chant long incantations. With a single gesture of his divine will, he smoothed out the wrinkles of the earth itself!"

"Praise the Grand Architect of the Heavens!" the three hundred geometers and alchemists screamed in unison, falling prostrate across the observatory floor. "He has tamed the fire of the world!"

Back on Solitude Spire, the afternoon breeze gently ruffled the straw brim of Felix’s hat.

Felix blew a stray speck of dust off the screen of his AetherDeck.

"Much better," Felix said, examining the newly organized 8-bit map. "Clean paths. No weird terrain hitboxes. That should prevent the AI from doing stupid pathfinding loops."

He selected his party of four little 8-bit characters: a knight with a tiny sword, a wizard with a purple hat, an archer with green boots, and an alchemist holding a bubbling flask.

He dragged them to the entrance of Level 11 and tapped the big green button: [AUTOPLAY].

The four little pixel sprites immediately marched into the newly carved canal chamber, whacking small red slimes and bats with cheerful retro crunch sounds:

*Thwack. Bip. Crunch.*

A dark Inspector HUD bracket hovered over the AetherDeck:

【Mini-Game: Catacomb Crawler 8-Bit (Stage 2)】 【Current Zone: Magma Core (Levels 11–20)】 【Mode: AFK Auto-Battle (Active)】 【Efficiency Rating: 99.4% (Optimal Drainage Bonus Applied)】 【Estimated Clear Time to Boss: 45 Minutes】 【Inspector Note: Magma hazards neutralized through aggressive urban planning. Subterranean fire elementals are currently extremely confused by your tidy drainage geometry.】

Felix smiled contentedly, sliding the slate back into his tunic pocket.

"Forty-five minutes," Felix said, leaning his head back into the soft ergonomic mesh of the recliner. "Just enough time to rest my eyes before the floor twenty boss spawns."

The screen door creaked open.

Lyra Ashford stepped onto the porch, carrying a fresh tray with a tall glass of chilled melon juice and a clean porcelain bowl.

She stopped at the railing, her golden eyes wide with shock.

Beneath the soles of her silk boots, she could feel the change. The deep, violent subterranean tremors that had plagued the Eastern Continent for months—the uneasy seismic rumblings of the waking fire dragons—had vanished completely.

In their place was a calm, rhythmic pulse. The earth felt solid, orderly, and anchored, vibrating in perfect harmony with the **2.0-Earth-Mass terrestrial core** resting inside Senior Brother’s chest.

Lyra looked at Felix, who was already crossing his hands over his stomach beneath his straw hat.

"Senior Brother," Lyra whispered, her voice thick with reverence. "The deep earth... it has fallen quiet. The ancient seismic anger has ceased."

"Yeah, well," Felix mumbled from under his hat, his voice thick with sleepy satisfaction. "A little basic drainage goes a long way. People let things get too messy, and then they wonder why everything breaks down."

Lyra’s breath hitched in her throat.

*He speaks of the continental mantle as mere plumbing...* she thought, her soul trembling with profound enlightenment. *To Senior Brother, even the apocalyptic fury of the earth's fiery core is merely an untidy room that requires a firm, disciplined hand.*

*He does not fight nature. He simply organizes it.*

"Your wisdom is boundless, Senior Brother," Lyra murmured, placing the chilled melon juice onto the side table with infinite care.

Down in the yard, the Thunder Gryphon let out a happy, muffled burp in its sleep, flicking its tail at a passing dragonfly.

On the porch railing, Barnaby the clockwork owl did not move.

The black rubber stopper remained wedged tightly in his beak. He held his copper coin firmly in his left claw, his glowing amber eyes staring silently at the horizon, keeping watch over a continent that had just been quietly saved from destruction.

Felix Vance let out a long, peaceful sigh, closing his eyes as the gentle mountain breeze rocked his chair into a deep, uninterrupted slumber.
