Chapter 061: The Subterranean Ghost Fleet

Ten miles beneath the floating roots of the Seven Spires, darkness was an ancient, living thing.

Down in the Abyssal Crypt of the First Emperor, cold stone had slept undisturbed for ten thousand years. Giant chains forged from soul-chilled black iron hung across the subterranean trenches, pinning massive basalt sarcophagi to the floor.

No mortal cultivation masters ever came down here. The air was thick with the stench of stagnant burial wax and decayed spirit marrow.

At least, that was how it used to be.

Lately, the bottom of the world felt like an abandoned construction zone hit by an earthquake.

Deep fissures crisscrossed the vault ceiling. Random sections of primeval ward-carvings had chipped off, pulverized by invisible gravitational tremors that rattled the tectonic plates every afternoon at precisely 2:00 PM.

High above, a young man taking a nap in a floating recliner had no idea his two-planet core mass leaked tiny gravitational micro-pulses down through the crust. To Felix, he was just letting his phone-slate run an idle dungeon crawler while he slept.

To the sealed horrors below, it was ten straight days of continuous siege artillery.

*CRACK.*

A hairline fracture split across the Grand Seal of the Nether Emperor.

The nine-thousand-pound slab of dragon-vein jade, once believed to be indestructible by every founding patriarch of the High Sun Empire, shattered like cheap green glass.

A pillar of pitch-black spectral frost geysered through the rift, freezing the subterranean stalactites into jagged needles of necrotic ice.

From the shattered depths of the central crypt, two eyes opened.

They burned with pale violet hellfire, illuminating a towering shadow wrapped in tattered funeral silks of imperial black.

*“FREEDOM!”*

The roar rattled the subterranean foundations, carrying the accumulated hatred of ten thousand years of imprisonment.

This was Lord Nether-Bane, the Sovereign of the Spectral Void and High King of the Subterranean Dead. In the First Epoch, his name alone had caused three continental dynasties to collapse into ash.

He had commanded legions of immortal specters and drained the blood of whole provinces to forge his soul-armada. When the ancient gods banded together to bury him under the roots of the earth, he had sworn to return when the stars aligned.

Now, his prison was broken.

"The heavens have decayed!" the Ghost King bellowed, his voice echoing off the dripping stone walls like scraping iron blades. "The primordial seals rot! The mortal insects who dwell under the golden sun have grown soft and blind!"

He raised his gaunt, withered arms, claws glistening with necrotic rot.

Across the bottomless trenches, millions of dormant burial mounds began to shake.

*CREAK. GROAN. SHATTER.*

Ten thousand crypt vaults burst open simultaneously.

From the dark chasms rose the ancient pride of the nether realm: the Subterranean Ghost Fleet.

Massive dreadnoughts carved from the ribcages of prehistoric sea monsters floated into the cavernous air. Their hulls were stitched together with sinews of dark wraiths, their sails woven from the weeping souls of fallen soldiers.

Eerie lanterns burning with cold soul-fire flickered along their gunwales.

Behind the hundred flagship leviathans swarmed a boundless ocean of darkness: one million howling wraiths, wailing banshees, and spectral shock-cavalry riding skeletal wyverns.

The collective spiritual pressure was enough to extinguish the life force of an entire kingdom in an afternoon.

"Ascend!" the Ghost King commanded, brandishing an ancient, jagged bone scythe. "Rise to the surface world! We shall blot out their pathetic mortal sun! We shall drown their seven floating spires in an ocean of eternal winter!"

The million-ghost armada surged upward through the grand subterranean fissures, screaming with hunger.

Meanwhile, five miles above the cloud line, the Radiant Dawn Academy was having a quiet afternoon.

Or at least, it had been quiet until thirty seconds ago.

Inside the grand astrological observatory of the First Spire, Chief Diviner Master Vance stood before the Great Celestial Armillary Sphere. He was humming a pleasant tune, holding a delicate porcelain cup of jasmine tea.

Suddenly, the armillary sphere began to spin backward at five hundred revolutions per minute.

*CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!*

The brass planetary rings screeched in agony.

Before Master Vance could react, the basin of sacred scrying water turned solid black, freezing into jagged obsidian frost so violently that the stone pedestal cracked.

"What in the name of the ancestors..." Master Vance stammered, his spectacles slipping down his nose.

He rushed to the balcony, staring down through the clouds toward the middle abyss.

The bottomless gorges beneath the floating academy were no longer bathed in the soft blue mist of the upper atmosphere. A suffocating, ink-black miasma was boiling up from the trenches, moving with terrifying speed.

The ambient temperature began to drop like a thrown rock.

*DONG! DONG! DONG!*

The Great Calamity Bell of the First Spire began to toll on its own, striking seventy-two desperate warning chimes.

Throughout the academy courtyards, thousands of disciples dropped their training wooden swords in terror. Elders burst through the roofs of their secluded cultivation pavilions, their faces pale as death.

Headmaster Alistair materialized on the highest terrace of the First Spire, his long white beard whipping in the suddenly freezing northern gale.

"The Abyssal Crypt..." Alistair whispered, his voice trembling with genuine horror. "The imperial seal of the First Epoch has failed! It is Lord Nether-Bane's ghost fleet! A million specters are ascending to blot out the sky!"

"Headmaster!" Elder Vance shouted, his robes flapping wildly in the icy downdraft. "The defensive barriers cannot repel pure necrotic soul-frost of that scale! If that armada breaches the cloud deck, our spiritual roots will freeze within minutes! We must evacuate the inner disciples to the eastern borders!"

"Evacuate?" Alistair laughed with bitter despair. "Where could we run? The Ghost King carries enough ancient malice to freeze three empires! This is an extinction-level catastrophe!"

Above the grand canyon, the sun began to lose its golden hue.

A shadowy veil of frost climbed the sky, swallowing the horizon in bruised, twilight purple.

Far to the south, on the quiet, weed-choked cliffs of Solitude Spire, the catastrophic alarms of the First Spire sounded like faint, pathetic cricket chirps.

Solitude Spire lived in its own private world.

On the front lawn, the colossal Imperial Sun-Griffin lay flat on its side, snoring heavily.

Its golden feathers were so thick and warm from days of sleeping next to the Sun-Lotus Cabbage that the encroaching cold barely registered. The griffin merely tucked its beak under its wing, gave a rumbling snort, and let out a warm puff of ozone that melted a stray snowflake three feet away.

Perched upon the porch railing, Barnaby the clockwork owl stood rigidly in place.

The black rubber stopper remained jammed deep into his brass beak, holding his pompous voice hostage.

His polished amber crystal eyes clicked twice to the left, tracking the dark shadow spreading across the northern horizon. Finding no threat that violated his current programming of being an ornamental yard decoration, Barnaby swiveled his brass head forward again and stared at the grass.

Lyra Ashford stood near the vegetable patch, holding a wooden watering bucket.

She froze, her sharp golden eyes narrowing as she felt the unnatural, marrow-chilling frost creeping over the garden fence.

Her hand dropped instantly to the hilt of her silver rapier.

"Necrotic chill..." Lyra whispered, her breath turning to pale mist. "A boundless tide of spectral yin energy. Someone has disturbed the ancient graves of the deep void."

She turned her head toward the porch, her heart pounding against her ribs.

Was this the ultimate trial? Was the world about to end?

She looked up at the porch.

There, resting comfortably inside the Zero-Gravity Recliner, Senior Brother Felix Vance had not moved an inch.

His worn straw hat was pulled low over his forehead, shielding his eyes. His hands were clasped over his stomach, rising and falling in slow, rhythmic breathing.

Around his floating chair, a faint, imperceptible distortion bent the light.

It was the quiet, idling hum of his 2.0-Earth-Mass terrestrial core. Two whole planetary masses of concentrated primordial density rested in his chest like an asleep dragon, casually canceling out the atmospheric pressure of the entire mountain peak.

Beside Felix's elbow, resting on the pine side table, the obsidian slate of the AetherDeck lay face-up.

Its glass screen glowed with a faint, pixelated notification:

Felix let out a soft, sleepy snuffle from beneath the straw hat.

He didn't read the alert. He had turned the notification chimes off three weeks ago because the dungeon level-up dings were interrupting his mid-morning doze.

To Felix, the AetherDeck was just running another background simulation.

Mobile games always threw ridiculous numbers at the player to make them feel important. 'A million ghosts'? Sure, buddy. Just another wave of low-tier trash mobs with identical sprites recycled to fill up screen space.

He reached out a limp hand, blindly feeling across the side table until his fingers brushed the ceramic handle of his teacup.

He lifted the cup to his lips, expecting warm, fragrant mountain mist tea.

【Target: Lukewarm Mountain Mist Tea】 【Temperature: 18°C (Dropping rapidly due to ambient outdoor refrigeration event)】 【Inspector Note: Current beverage status: Highly disappointing. Drinking cold green tea reduces afternoon comfort by 15%. Recommend deploying thermal blanket or filing complaint with dungeon weather moderators.】

Instead, his lips met cold porcelain and a lukewarm puddle.

Felix’s eyebrows twitched beneath the straw hat.

"Why is the tea getting cold?" he mumbled, his voice gravelly with sleep. "I poured this ten minutes ago."

Down in the yard, Lyra watched Senior Brother murmur to himself, and her soul shuddered with sudden, overwhelming comprehension.

*Senior Brother already knows!* she thought, her breath catching in her throat.

*He felt the necrotic yin energy rising from the abyss, and his only reaction was to note that the ambient thermal balance had drifted! To an existence who cradles the weight of two worlds within his bosom, a million ancient ghosts are nothing more than a draft that cools his afternoon beverage!*

Lyra gripped her sword hilt tighter, tears of religious awe shining in her eyes.

*How vast is his realm? How terrifying is his supreme indifference? The entire academy is trembling in despair, yet Senior Brother does not even deign to lift his hat!*

Below the floating peaks, the sky turned completely black.

The vanguard of the Subterranean Ghost Fleet breached the lower cloud bank.

A hundred monstrous bone dreadnoughts burst into the open air, their shadowy hulls wreathed in screaming banshees. Behind them, the sky was completely choked by a roiling, howling sea of a million wraiths.

At the helm of the central dreadnought, the Ghost King raised his soul scythe toward the heavens.

"Look upon your doom, mortal cattle!" the Ghost King screamed, his amplified voice booming across the archipelago like rolling thunder. "Today, the sun dies! Today, the Seven Spires shall become my imperial tomb!"

On the porch of Solitude Spire, Felix Vance pulled his straw hat down tighter over his ears.

"Can somebody turn down the neighborhood stereo?" Felix grumbled into his collar. "Some of us have an AFK timer to finish."
