Chapter 076: The Imperial Capital Panic

The Imperial Observatory of the Sol-Aethel Empire had stood untouched for nine hundred years.

Its primary chamber was housed beneath a vaulted dome of black meteorite iron. In the center spun the Great Celestial Sphere, a thirty-foot marvel of enchanted brass, floating lenses, and star-sapphire gears that mapped the spiritual ley lines of the entire continent.

Around the chamber, seventy-two antique divination mirrors lined the marble walls.

Each mirror was linked directly to a major astrological node across the empire. If a high elder broke through to the Heavenly Realm, a mirror glowed faint silver. If a dragon awoke in the northern icefields, a mirror flashed cold blue.

At twelve minutes past midnight, every single mirror turned blinding, incandescent gold.

Three seconds later, they began to pop like heated corn kernels.

*CRACK!*

*BANG! SHATTER!*

Explosions of molten glass sprayed across the polished marble floor.

The seventy-two divination mirrors blew out in rapid succession, blasting shards of burning silver foil into the tapestries. The ambient room temperature spiked from a brisk sixty degrees to nearly one hundred and forty in the span of two breaths.

High Astrologer Julian dropped his crystal telescope with a strangled yelp.

"The mirrors!" Julian shrieked, clutching his singed grey beard as smoke billowed from his silk sleeves. "The northern array is gone! The western ley-towers just blew their safety fuses! By the ancestors, what is happening to the sky?!"

Before any apprentice could answer, the Great Celestial Sphere gave a groaning screech.

The massive brass gears, designed to withstand the spiritual turbulence of falling comets, ground to a dead halt. The central star-sapphire, valued at three million imperial gold crowns, glowed with terrible white heat.

A hairline fracture raced across the gem.

*PING!*

The sapphire shattered into fine blue powder.

The counterweight chains snapped like dry twine. Brass rings weighing four tons each detached from their gimbals, crashing onto the stone floor with ear-splitting thuds and rolling wildly through the smoke.

Julian stood paralyzed amid the wreckage, his mouth hanging wide open.

Through the shattered skylight of the iron dome, the night sky burned with unnatural brightness.

It was glowing.

A wash of pure, radiant amber washed over the imperial rooftops. For ten unbelievable minutes, the capital city of Sol-Aethel was bathed in the warm, golden glory of high noon.

The golden light carried no scent of ash, no smell of demonic sulfur, and no trace of bloodlust.

Instead, it tasted like honey, warm baked bread, and summer sunlight.

"High Astrologer!" an apprentice cried, crawling out from beneath an overturned bronze desk with bleeding palms. "The spiritual compasses! They didn't point toward the firmament! The solar spike didn't come from outer space!"

Julian grabbed the boy by his robes, lifting him clean off the floor. "Where did it come from?! Speak, boy!"

"South!" the apprentice wept in terror. "Twelve thousand leagues to the south! Right in the middle of the Mistveil Mountains! Inside the borders of the Radiant Dawn Academy!"

Julian let go of the boy, stumbling backward into a pile of crushed brass cogs.

"The Radiant Dawn Academy..." Julian whispered, his face turning the color of skim milk. "That backwater training school for minor sect brats? A god has opened its eyes in their backyard, and the heavens themselves just shattered our eyes."

Ten minutes later, the Bell of Nine Calamities began to toll across the Imperial Citadel.

*DONG.*

*DONG.*

*DONG.*

The heavy bronze bell had not rung nine times since the Great Abyssal Incursion four centuries ago.

Its deep, vibrating gong shook the red roof tiles of every noble manor in the upper district. Courtiers leaped from their silk mattresses in nightgowns. Armored imperial guards spilled into the courtyard with drawn halberds, shouting orders and forming defensive squares.

Within twenty minutes, the Grand Golden War Council had gathered in the Palace of the Rising Sun.

Emperor Aurelius stood at the head of the long obsidian war table.

He was sixty winters old, clad in heavy dragon-scale gold armor that clanked with every breath. His temples were silver, but his dark eyes burned with the cold, ruthless pride of a sovereign who had conquered twenty rebellious provinces with steel and fire.

Surrounding the table were nineteen imperial ministers, seven high dukes, and three Arch-Marshals of the Imperial Sky-Fleet.

Every face was white with sweat.

"Report," Emperor Aurelius ordered. His voice was low, flat, and hard as an iron anvil. "And do not waste my time with poetic nonsense. Who set off a miniature sun above my realm?"

High Astrologer Julian threw himself flat on the polished obsidian floor, trembling so violently his forehead bumped the stone.

"Your Imperial Majesty!" Julian stammered, holding up the charred remnants of a brass divination plate.

【Target: Charred Dragon-Vein Astrological Plate】 【Condition: Vitrified / Circuit Overload (Core Burnout: 100%)】 【Residual Readings: 15,000,000 Kelvin thermal flare; localized gravitational compression】 【Inspector Note: Device completely fried. Local astromancers attempted to measure stellar fusion with bronze gears and melted their warranty. Typical cheap third-party hardware.】

"Forget about ritual arrays! Forget imperial breakthroughs! This is... this is an active, living core!"

The war room fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

Duke Vane, a towering noble with a scarred jaw, scoffed loudly. "A living core? Julian, you old fool, have the wine cellars rotted your brain? A core that can illuminate half a continent and crack twelve thousand divination mirrors would require the mass of a celestial body! No cultivator could hold such density without imploding into a black hole!"

"The readings do not lie, Duke Vane!" Julian shouted, lifting his soot-stained hands. "The gravitational signature alone pulled the southern tides three feet out of rhythm for eight minutes! The temperature in the Mistveil basin rose four degrees! If that core had vented its full energy for another thirty seconds, the entire southern mountain range would have melted into glass!"

"Silence," Emperor Aurelius commanded.

The room froze instantly.

The Emperor looked down at the map projected upon the obsidian table. A glowing red beacon was pulsing directly over the southern territory, labeled *Radiant Dawn Academy - Seventh Spire*.

"The Seventh Spire," the Emperor murmured, his fingers tapping the pommel of his imperial broadsword. "The forsaken peak. The peak where disgraced elders go to rot, and where no spiritual vein has flowed for two centuries. Why there?"

A cold, smooth voice cut through the tense room like a freshly sharpened blade.

"Because whoever resides there believes they are beyond the reach of the throne."

The ministers parted like wheat before a scythe.

Walking toward the table was Grand Inquisitor Drake.

He wore the black-and-gold high uniform of the Imperial Inquisition, complete with an immaculate high collar, polished leather riding boots, and a heavy white cloak embroidered with the twin suns of the empire.

Drake was barely thirty-five years old, with pale skin, slicked-back raven hair, and pale grey eyes devoid of human warmth. Across his chest hung seven medals of subjugation, earned by wiping out rebellious sects and incinerating heretical cults down to their foundations.

At his hip rested the Sun-Cleaver, an ancient soul-binding rapier forged from sky-iron.

"Grand Inquisitor Drake," Emperor Aurelius said, his eyes narrowing. "You have an opinion on this celestial disturbance?"

"It is not an opinion, Your Majesty," Drake replied smoothly, offering a crisp, measured bow that held more pride than deference. "It is a matter of imperial order."

Drake stepped up to the table, his white-gloved hand resting on the southern map coordinates.

"Whether this phenomenon is an ancient titan waking from hibernation, an unregistered rogue cultivator reaching godhood, or an unstable primordial relic unearthed by fools, the law remains absolute," Drake said, his tone icy. "All supreme power within the borders of Aethelgard belongs exclusively to the Imperial Crown. No recluse is permitted to shine brighter than the throne."

Duke Vane frowned, leaning forward over his thick forearms. "Drake, you arrogant pup, did you not hear Julian? The anomaly cracked seventy-two divination mirrors across the capital! If this being is an ancient sovereign, you cannot simply slap imperial tax warrants on his front gate!"

Drake smiled thin, humorless smile.

"Then we will bring enough iron to drown him," Drake said.

He turned toward Emperor Aurelius, his grey eyes gleaming with cold ambition.

"Grant me the High Warrant of Absolute Subjugation, Your Majesty," Drake requested. "Authorize the immediate deployment of the First Sky-Fleet. The Twelve Sky-Dreadnoughts of the Golden Vanguard."

A gasp rippled through the assembled ministers.

The Twelve Sky-Dreadnoughts were the ultimate dread weapon of the Sol-Aethel Empire.

Each ship was a six-hundred-foot floating fortress of reinforced dark-iron, powered by chained elemental leviathan cores. They were armed with three hundred heavy solar cannons apiece, capable of carpet-bombing mountain chains and wiping entire mountain sects from the map in a single afternoon.

The fleet had not been deployed in full force for fifty years.

"Mobilizing the entire Vanguard?" the Minister of Finance whispered, clutching his chest. "The spirit-stone cost alone for such a voyage will drain our quarterly treasury!"

"Let it drain," Emperor Aurelius said coldly.

The Emperor drew his signet ring from his thumb and slammed it onto the parchment war order on the table. The golden wax seal flashed with imperial authority.

"Grand Inquisitor Drake," the Emperor declared, his voice echoing off the vaulted rafters. "Take the Twelve Sky-Dreadnoughts. Fly south to the Radiant Dawn Academy. Surround the Seventh Spire."

"And the occupant, Your Majesty?" Drake asked, taking the sealed scroll into his gloved hand.

"If it is a weapon, seize it," Aurelius commanded. "If it is an ancient god willing to swear fealty to the throne, offer him the title of Supreme Imperial Protector. But if this rogue recluse refuses to bow his head to the crown..."

The Emperor's eyes turned as hard as flint.

"...level the Seventh Spire until it is nothing more than gravel in the clouds."

"By your command, Your Majesty," Drake said, bowing with practiced elegance.

He turned on his heel, his white cloak snapping in the air as he strode toward the heavy bronze doors of the war room.

"Within twenty-four hours," Drake murmured under his breath, stepping out into the night courtyard where steam was already rising from the engine bays of the sky-docks, "this backwater sovereign will learn that no one plays god in my sky."

Meanwhile, twelve thousand leagues away, on the peaceful heights of Solitude Spire.

The night breeze drifted softly through the cracked wooden window of the small bedroom.

In the center of the cedar bed, Felix Vance let out a gentle, bubbling snore.

He rolled over onto his belly, hugging his celestial feather pillow tight against his chest. His bare left foot slipped out from under the heavy cotton quilt, catching the cool night air.

Within his chest, the miniature 1.0-Earth-Mass star pulsed with quiet, rhythmic warmth.

The AetherDeck's automated background dampers hummed at 99.9999% efficiency, absorbing the staggering gravitational pull and converting the thermonuclear fury into a pleasant, radiant hum that kept Felix's lower back perfectly relaxed.

Across the nightstand, the dark glass screen of the AetherDeck woke up for a brief moment.

A tiny system notification crawled along the lower bezel:

Felix smacked his lips together in his sleep.

"Five more minutes, mom..." he mumbled into his pillow. "The raid boss... doesn't drop anything good anyway..."

He pulled the quilt back over his shoulder, burrowed his nose into the soft linen, and went right back to sleep.

Outside his cottage, the fate of the continent hung by a thread.

Inside his bedroom, the room temperature stayed at a perfect sixty-eight degrees.
